My thoughts exactly, I loved the Sonic TV series and 2D movie as a kid, I'm just wondering if production companies are scared of making 2D cartoon movies anymore. Honestly, the old Sonic movie was my jam as a kid, I know it wasn't technically a full theatrical movie, but still. I feel like these producers just want things to look as real as possible and it just doesn't work with IPs like this, just look at the Mario Bros movie, it doesn't work (Even if I still secretly love that movie and all its weird cheese).
I think Detective Pikachu looks like it has the right balance, but that's yet to be seen. The backlash from the Sonic trailer is so far beyond anything I've seen in recent years though, and I feel terrible for the artists that got shilled into this pile of hot garbage, and even worse knowing they'll be getting hate for this despite the fact that they probably weren't the ones who had a say in design choice. The writing even seems pretty bad, but that isn't really fair to say from just a trailer, I just think this whole ordeal could've gone much better.
Asking the artists to rework what they probably poured their blood and sweat into is just insane at this point. A sick part of me actually hopes they find a lost tape version of the current terrible looking version lol
They did it on purpose.
Why though, I don't quite know.
Fucking up the design that badly doesn't makes any sense.

Exact same situation. The plot isn't the same nor is the setting; even the characters name's are not the same. They're just bankin' on people coming in because of the name.
Even if the main character no longer looks like someone took the CG from the Woody Woodpecker movie and applied an early 2000s "HD" texture pack to it, that's still not going to fix any other problem with this movie, all it will do is subject the animators to some brutal crunch time to fix a mistake that likely wasn't even theirs in the first place.
They're delaying the movie

Good
Now I can watch Sonic on Valentine's day. Great.
And cool they're hinting that the new design might have gloves.
Sonic is wearing a glove
The directors of the Doom movie admitted they had never even seen footage of Doom gameplay
Bookies now taking bets on whether Britain will still be in the EU when the Sonic movie releases
There's a rumour going around that Tyson from Sonic Mania Adventures, is helping out.

I thought it was one of these.
hmm this puts a dent in my conspiracy theory that the design was intentionally shit to cause a big stir. everyone's going to have forgotten about it by then
I really really really doubt any company would deliberately try and give people a bad first impression of their film as some kind of convoluted grand scheme or whatever.
Sometimes there is such a thing as bad publicity.
Didn't the producer of the movie himself outright said he doesn't care about Sonic's original design hence he's making this abomination? I doubt this will turn out to be anything great
As nice as it is to see Tyson Hesse (and others involved in Sonic Mania) get more professional recognition
Is it odd that I feel a twinge of sympathy for Tyson Hesse, as in, I feel him being involved in this trainwreck of a movie will drag his professional pedigree down to some degree?
I'm sure he'll have something nice to add to his resume. Hollywood won't care what the gaming world thinks of the movie, it'll do just fine financially I assume.
why did he censor his name in that first tweet?
it's a weird trend on twitter where people just censor names/things in their tweets
I don't get it either
