Complaining about XP and saying its a circlejerk, while commending Vista
I am unapologetic. Vista was the better OS.
Windows 7 and vista are the worst looking windows ever don't @ me
Rounded shit is ugly as hell. It was so good when they switched to a square design, why the hell would they take such a massive step back now
I'll be blunt: I disliked the look even when it was new not even gonna talk about how bad it was, because I didn't really have any problems with it, despite everyone else having had so. Well, had a few, but yeah… Still think XP looked fantastic, but its more of nostalgia maybe. I dunno, I quite liked it.
The later Royale days of XP looked nice, and you could start to see the beginnings of Aero Vista in the black Zune variant (particularly the taskbar). But the old Luna theme always looked too garish to me unless you set it to the silver variant. Felt like one of those old Winamp or Windows Media Player skins.
Yeah and imo Fluent is just the expected evolution of Metro. Like, Metro But Better.
Y'see, I never minded Metro. But then again, I'm the guy who always had a genuine enthusiasm for road signs.
my linux is skinned like win10 but a lot prettier and more consistent. no pics cause it's shy. it won't bring me back if changing the themes was more robust but i would've kept me on a lot longer.
what if I encourage you to post pics of your OS/UI by posting that of my own? https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/316685/ba2ff4bb-924e-4d23-be4f-cb01fc72a578/Desktop Screenshot 2019.05.05 - 07.57.51.32.png It isn't Linux though, and it isn't anything special (except for the animated fire-smoke background maybe), but I am curious about you!
I was able to disable the service that downloads them in the first place before I connected to the internet after I installed Windows on my new rig. Turns out they are downloaded and installed after installation.
It's just a new option they have added.
I wish they'd stop making it harder and harder to find my settings, too.
incredible! windows has just announced their newest UI redesign: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132451/a289899d-120d-45af-a778-48971a42acd7/image.png
You can at least change that back though.
I literally just googled "windows 10 design inconsistency" as I knew that the majority of them still hadn't been fixed, didn't bother checking the build number
I personally just want them to fix the inconsistency issues, and bring back aero in some form. Semi-transparency looks really nice IMO
Heh the silver wasn't bad, but the regular blue one was great imo. I'd be up for having all the themes tbh.
I did it on my worktop, and I'd have pulled the trigger on every machine I own if it wasn't for some anti-cheats being grumpy about Wine.
I do miss XP and colored Mac G3 days, the interfaces had more life to them despite them being so much more limited in display quality. Now that displays are amazing even on the phones everything has to be squared off and flattened, go figure. And the most amazing thing is, all of these choices were initially made for the sake of efficiency yet somehow a lot of interfaces feel like a burden to use. But we have a long future ahead of us.
It's not just dark/light. It's the different fonts, sizes, and icons
I like the rounded corners :c
Wait, when was a Windows UI ever consistent? In Win98, people were complaining about the pixelated Win3.1 icons scattered about. This is part for the course as far as I can tell.
To be honest, spotlight search is something I miss when I swap from my macbook to my desktop. It's pretty crap at looking for documents but the built in calculator function and being able to press cmd+ b to google whatever text is typed are just two features that enhance productivity (And yes the win10 search does both of these things but the calculator gets confused easily and defaults to a web search, and the web search defaults to bing/edge). I definitely wouldn't mind a windows equivalent.
I'd rather they'd just work on the update process so my computer doesn't sit at 100% disk utilization all the time for no discernable reason while the update menu is buried beneath several layers of settings.
remember: disk utilization of any sort will always show 100% because its almost impossible to gauge what a true 100% would be at any given moment.
why would they do rounder corners if our displays have sharp corners it'd look weird
ya that's true but it just seems like previous versions of windows didn't handle updates so poorly.
I don't know why noone has pointed this out yet, but it appears to be Microsoft's take on the spotlight feature in mac OS, which is a superior version of the windows start search (it actually finds shit, for one). Spotlight in Mac is completely key activated and needs visual distinction from other windows in the OS, so it actually has even more rounded corners than the default round edges of macOS, in that sense it is logical that Windows' take on it would use a similar way of distincting the search element from other windows, also making the feature more native to mac users looking to switch over (one of the most common features mac users miss on windows is spotlight). In other words rounded corners aren't coming to Windows, it's just a visual distinction for their copy of spotlight, they're probably trying to pull in some mac users next year and so decided to add this type of element to their design system for windows. They could obviously add a key activated spotlight window to the design pattern without rounded corners though, so I wonder if they'll stick to it.
Not sure what you mean by key-activated. The search you get in your start menu can easily be done by just hitting the Windows key and typing something, without ever having to touch the mouse or navigate any menus.
