Facepunch is enamored by Valve's flat structure but doesn't have the hiring expertise to actually hire the people capable of responsibly implementing it.
So instead we get Layla.
Obvioisly you dont else you wouldnt keep posting
If you did this shitty PR for any proper company (fp is a tiny joke) you wouldn't have that job for long lmao
this kind of attitude isn't exactly new from layla tbh
Make me wonder if Facepunch Studios would eventually get sued under EU Law and GDPR
Hi, while i don't give a fuck about who makes a program, the fact of the mater is, well, chapter 2 of the National Intelligence Law in China states their citizens need to help them with intelligence operations. And seeing how China is authoritarian, its not much of a stretch to think they are spying on people.
But, seeing how this is just a video game, i don't think they are in this case.
BUT, seeing how the creators of said API makes money off of it.
Yeah, This is the real problem and is probably against GDPR
Yeah that was a gold response from @MinIsMin. (Post for everyone interested: Next Update v9)
It's like one of these cases a white hat hacker hacks a companies' webpage after the hackers' error reports being ignored.
All he wanted was to know what data was collected and asked about it. But this was "anal" apparently.
Now we confirmed that the collected data is indeed quite innocent through reverse engineering. I personally see no problems with this data.
So Facepunch' defensive attitudes and secretiveness makes even less sense.
I think we could be have avoided that whole shitstorm then the information would have been given right away.
I just graduated college and cold use a job. Hit me up Facepunch Studios, I have a degree in public communications and I possess the ability to not curse out customers. That seems like a rare talent that few of your employees have.
What would win?
A whole tech firm that apparently designed the social credit system being used in China plus who knows what else, or a random guy with something anyone whatsoever can download?
This is the exact same as that one time I got a parking ticket, because I trusted a random guy on the street with knowing if it was a legit parking spot or not.
holy shit i've never seen deflection this violent since that kh2 speedrun
Hire me Facepunch:
FirstTimePlaying = LoadConfig("data/userconfig.ini", "FirstTimePlaying");
CanTrack = false;
if (FirstTimePlaying == true)
{
ShowPopup("Hello. Because we find Steam's API inadequate, we have created our own analytics system. \
As a result, we would like to request your permission to collect the following information, \
which will be kept fully anonymous: \n
X\n
Y\n
Z\n
Do you accept?");
WaitPopup();
CanTrack = PopupResult();
SaveConfig("data/userconfig.ini", "FirstTimePlaying", false);
SaveConfig("data/userconfig.ini", "CanTrack", CanTrack);
}
if (CanTrack == true)
{
TrackStuff();
SendToFacepunch();
SendToChina();
}
It's becoming increasingly obvious they're putting this in place so they can jump ship to Epic
What will be a regrettable decision, to be sure.
s&box, now an EGS exclusive, going from the 20 players that were interested in it before to literally just the dev team
I'll get my popcorn ready, This will be fun to watch.
Also finally paid mods because why not?
After they're done with punching their Facebook and Google money-bags, I got a feeling they will start looking at other companies.
What I also find shady are:
GDPR states that there are required a reason behind the data-collection. A sandbox game does NOT have a reasonable reason to request credit-card details and HTTP requests ... ect ( Asked by Gmod EULA ). Gmod doesn't even have micro-transactions, so why ask for credit-card consent? I start to questioning if Gmods EULA breaks GDPR; "Legitimate Interest".
I find the EULA list contradicting with itself. GDPR requires companies to tell what/where, how and when your data is used. Not a "We don't sell your data without your permission (even tho we don't have an option anywhere) but third parties might do, we don't know what tho ¯\_(ツ)_/¯".
GDPR say that companies have to opt-out and not opt-in. That is why Google are forced to give you privacy options instead of a "take it or leave it"-approach. Data collection like this should be a choice for the consumers that are off by default.
I'm still waiting on an email from the FP legal-team, asking them to answer my questions. If I don't get answers soon I might have to the local DPA and ask them for my rights as I'm not a lawyer.
All the more reason for everyone to remember and support Silverlan and his Pragma efforts. Pragma - the Garry's Mod 2 we deserve.
(I'm just really freaking excited for Pragma's new features combined with its backwards-compatibility with Source assets)
The 2016 breach had emails, passwords, birthdays, ip addresses, and a bunch of other minor stuff. Pretty significant if you ask me, but what can you do. Mistakes happen.
What the fuck happened to this thread? It went from "I'm slightly concerned about my privacy," to "You're a bunch of Xenophobes for not believing the Chinese." real quick.
All you had to respond with it "We changed it for a reason, let me outline why. If you still don't trust it, move on, we won't be offended."

On the one hand, I can see why this would scare some people, but on the other hand, it's nice to see such a progressive attitude.

S&box is a UE4 creation. It would only make sense to go to Epic with all their fancy pricing.
That being said, if it does go that way, I hope S&box ends up like most of the other games that Facepunch Studios has created. The graveyard.
Never thought I'd see this much anti-fp sentiment in my life*. Obviously the forums is it's own shitshow but like, damn, way to burn goodwill.
*In this case it's justified I think. When the thread first started I was p convinced facepunch wasn't doing anything overly wrong compared to some other studios but between a certain group of devs not being able to function properly and some of the other stuff brought up in here now i'm not so sure.
Hey remember when Facepunch made a VR game?
Neither do they
Christ. I remember hearing about this game also.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“Around 2-4 months.”
LOL
Please tell us how it goes
Garry gets superpissed because of this thread and deletes the FP forums, calling it now.
Garry please don't.
But given Garry's track record, who knows.
It would be pretty amusing, man baby having another meltdown over internet meanies who paid him money and helped his products succeed.
That would involve him actually manning up and doing it instead of just saying "i'm gonna do it!!!"
