This is pretty much the only kind of response I personally could ask for -- a measured and informative response that doesn't resort to childish bear-baiting and name-calling because we're critical of something. Hopefully it's not condescending when I say thank you for taking the time to come out and speak to us on the level.
But garry said Steam provided the exact same kind of statistics. I think they provide the same statistics but it's scattered throughout several API methods, so I kinda understand that GameAnalytics is easier to use.
They clearly didn't factor that in when any concerns were met with "lmao u just hate chinese people"
I hope the team pays you double, for both being a dev and PR manager. This ... this is the part that is concerning me. You got an EULA that includes credit-cards, HTTP-requests, the size of your nose, your moms birthday and other random stuff that (allegedly) aren't being tracked. I know you might only be using function x,y,z .. ect, but this is a 3th party API from a data sniffing company. I trust those kind of companies as much as Facebook to handle my data. You could compare this to a calculator app on your phone, asking permission to use your camera, contacts and mic.
steamworks statistics api would be sufficient for this
So like Phil Fish then?

Literally reality.
Can we cancel his twitter? Shit makes you cringe...
You guys really need to hire a PR manager to deescalate things. Ofc people gets skeptic when you change the EULA within a game for no reason, and when people ask "why?" you don't lash out. Thanks to the replies from @Willox, I can peace together what you should have posted: Hey community I know you're a bit skeptic about the new EULA for Garrysmod. It's for the new analytics API we included. While we only keep track of time played, Steam have include all the functions within the API in the EULA. We have included the new API to get a better overview, as we find Steam's analytics imprecise and inferior. Do note that we anonymize all data and you can find the source code here; SDK. We only use these functions in the API: configureBuild, configureUserId, initialize, setEnabledManualSessionHandling, gameAnalyticsStartSession, gameAnalyticsEndSession. We have also included a setting within the menu where you can turn off the analytics. What you should have done: Include an option to turn off the analytics. Some people don't like being tracked, even if it's anonymized data. Maybe you shouldn't have made Steam include everything in the EULA and try and remove the disabled functions within the API. You guys do have a lawyer, so you could have worked towards a smaller EULA that doesn't include credit-cards and personal data. Start being GDPR friendly. If every EU citizen on this forum exercise their right to request access to (Article 15) GDPR, you guys got 30 days to respond to each. Work towards an automated system.
Speaking of GDPR, I'm pretty sure the system has to be a clear opt in system due to it, with a popup on the main menu during first launch or something, not hidden away in an old eula that some people never even had pop up because steam is steam.
You're not even allowed to automatically check the least favorable option for a users privacy
I mean, tbh You guys was being hostile too
A bit old .. but got an update regarding the email I send to FP legal team 28 days ago (Phew, just 2 days short): Regarding the purpose of the data-collection; I just got redirected to; Section 4.1 https://facepunch.com/legal/privacy. Still vague, but Willox clarified how Gmod utilize the tracking-tool; It anonymously track the time spent in the game and if the game is focused. (If you're actively playing). The reason being "Steams tracking-tool is inferior". No other functions are being utilized in the tracking-tool. Regarding ‘request and referral URL’ in the TOS; I was told that it was not being used on their website, or in any games. This will be removed from the TOS within the next update. Regarding 'Geo location' and 'in-game purchases'; Not mentioned in the reply. I speculate that Geo location might be used by the 3th party to plot the region with most data-traffic, but I send a reply asking about the 'in-game purchases' and how it is relevant in Garrysmod. (Still waiting)
Yeah uh, after those recent posts I'm probably just going to go to knockout and never buy a FP product again. Jesus christ.
I also got an email reply, though it pretty much seemed copy pasted and didn't actually answer any of the questions from my original email. Time to wait another 28 days
In this thread we learn that the best way to handle a PR backlash that has validity is not to accuse everyone of being racist. Who would of known? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Could someone please provide a tl;dr of the last 9 pages?
Read it yourself

and apparently we are all xenophobes
we're all crippling racists and facepunch has one of the most horribly 'LALALALALA IM NOT LISTENING' people in the world as an employee who has zero qualms with coming in with mud-filled super soakers with which to blast blindly into a crowd with
and Facepunch is sympathetic to sending our anonymous data to the chinese government as GameAnalytics is owned by Mobivista,, a chinese company, meanwhile Steam provides the same kind of data, making the switch more suspicious (garry wrote a few times saying Steam has this data they're collecting)
and it's probably all in preparation for the start of Facepunch on Epic Games, considering S&box is on UE4.
The one good thing this thread did was make me learn Knockout existed. Layla's behavior was absolutely shameful and while I'm not going to extend that to -every- FP Studios member holy christ you guys have apparently earned a reputation while I wasn't really paying attention. You can't just unearn that in a day
Do you know those company decisions where you're like: "Really? How did they not see that backlash coming, what idiots!". Thats facepunch all the time, except it's customers are drilled into accepting change, because they're all stupid and facepunch knows what's good for them. It's basically a spoiled brat learning the wrong things are right because they've through chance always worked for them. Garry should really look hard into what worth this community provides for their future games. Having had almost zero marketing outside facepunch, Rust becoming even a bit known was wholely thanks to facepunch (at the time there were many games like it that didn't have the community attention, that you now have never hears of). Which is an accomplishment in its own, because Rust wasn't worth any of the money pumped into it during early alpha, even in hindsight. Even a tiny bit of gratitude and respect in general would be much welcomed.
Holy shit, I can't even believe the response of some of these actual facepunch employees, what the christ. I'm definitely glad someone came along and clarified whats happening, but the general attitude from FPS regarding this is fucking shocking. I guess after 10 years of supporting you guys its time to go, I can't justify a bunch of elitists fucks treating their userbase like shit because people are concerned about their own privacy. fuck me I've seen mods on 4chan treat people better. guess its time to check out this knockout, never heard of it before this thread so thanks for the awareness of it.
Oh fuck please no, nonono
Hail Epic
oh no garrys mod 2 will be infected by kids what ever will we do
