I'm pretty we people understand the white supremacist movement trying to co-opt a symbol, we're just not okay with letting them do it.

We understand its a dog whistle, but we don't want it to be the de facto use for the symbol and the collective definition of it.

We don't want innocent people being called a white supremacist because they played a school prank or said "okay". Hell, in other cultures the okay sign is used to mean "zero," and in some cultures its an obscene gesture already due to connotations with sexual activity. But in the west, we use it to mean "okay" or "gotcha" and there's no value in letting Nazi's take the symbol for themselves.

That's all. Don't vilify people if you're not sure they used the okay sign to mean white power. If it's obvious, vilify them for being dipshit racists, not for using their fingers.

If you're worried about racists communicating in a secret language out in public and that people won't notice it, then you might want to worry about people speaking foreign languages out in public (in a country that doesn't speak that language), because they cold be saying horrible shit secretly as well. My uncle will speak Italian if he wants to bad mouth people in public near them without them knowing because he's a dick and no one he talks to will ever know because very few Americans speak the language (fun fact: if someone calls you frocio he's saying you're gay).
