The difference is putting the initiative on the consumer as opposed to doing it automatically on the backend for everyone who didn't even ask. One is good service, the other is conspicuously spending money to buy friends.
Fucking THIS. They haven't done shit to address their other anti-consumer tactics.
Booze-o the Drunken Clown.

Some people just want to see the world burn
This is called a loss leader They're only doing this because epic games store makes so little money relative to fortnite that they can just subsidize the entire sale with fortnite money. It's the exact same way Walmart is destroying our free market: they move into an area, lower their prices ludicrously, lose tons of money on the individual store while doing so, then jack the prices up after every competitor in a twenty mile radius is dead. This is an unsustainable business practice that is essentially indicative of a mad dash to burn as much cash as possible in an effort to force the EGS into maybe being profitable.
I argue that (elsewhere) to people who're drunk on the EGS "88%/Steam's a scammy greedy company because they take 30%" kool-aid and I get Save 18% profits now Vs. Later have the same profits....it's not trickery....it's simple back. EGS propaganda is tragically effective against consumers who think they understand the industry just because they buy games. Wal-Mart wins over the locals by going "best discounts in town!" until they're the only thing in town. Drug dealers let you have the first hit of crack free for a reason, too. But people still keep fucking taking the bait.
Thanks you paid for my copy
The thing is that there is room for competition and there is room to have lower fees than steam. That's a legitimate tactic. They are winning developers over in the proper way (provide a significantly better financial deal) but the way they're trying to "win" the consumers over is just absurd. They're not trying to win consumers, they're trying to artificially delete their options until epic becomes the best by default. Not because they're better than any other store, or because they offer more convenience or features. They think they deserve your patronage because they bought your developer and fuck you, you'll follow the developer.
Agree. They're doing it via an unsustainably (which they have admitted themselves) low house commission take, while also masking the effective take because they're passing on costs to the developer that Steam does not while not promoting those numbers with equal visibility to the touted 88%. And then there's also the exclusivity in exchange for advances on tens of thousands of copies business, but if a developer doesn't have ethical tangles involving previous promises of launch storefront availability I can understand them taking the money without any qualms so that's a dicey grey area. The financial deal is better but Epic is also being misleading about just how much better. Yes, agree.
Could you elaborate? I'm aware that they pass certain payment processor costs onto customers (which is not something customers will ever tolerate), but I haven't heard anything about developers paying higher fees. It wouldn't surprise me if the devs were responsible for, say, fraud costs though.
Payment processing overhead is what I was referring to because, AFAIK, that's all that's known. I'm not a developer selling a game on the EGS so I don't have any inside knowledge but I assume there are other overheads being passed on that Epic's not being forthcoming about because they look even better if they can massage public perception into thinking developers are getting 88% gross, no strings attached.
How dare you spend your money on what you want on this perticular store, It makes me so god damn mad! https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/161057/475679c2-dd60-4946-beac-6ff58ab04290/image.png
How dare you make an ignorant, strawman shitpost.
yw man
I'll hold out for the wallet beating from papa steam, thank you very much
oops lol looks like lots of people caved in. This stunt they pull is definitely working.
You're literaly what is wrong with consumers.
Bad enough that you're helping to line the pockets of Tim Sweeney, but now you're also giving money to the CEO that gives his co-workers wet willies while embezzling funds from the employee royalty pool.
Idk as much as I hate Epic and their practices, Detroit for 2.93 and World War Z for 4 euro sounds like a great deal.
Well now that i've been bitching about developers accepting what is essentially bribes to tie their products exclusively to Epic's store- If i now accept what i could construe as a bribe in the form of a great big discount-dash and go sweep up games from the store i've been criticizing so heavily, i'd look like a massive fucking slobbering dolt.
holy fuk I didn't know any of Supergiant's previous critically acclaimed games did so poorly that they would go under also those pitiful crowdfunded indie games not existing after getting money from their loyal fans not to mention all those games that got pulled from steam, damn, how could steam even allow not-exist games to have a store page???
Literally not true. Metro Exodus, Borderlands 3, Outer Worlds, Division 2, Phoenix Point, Satisfactory, and a bunch of the others.
Are you actually trying to act like them passing out automatic partial refunds is skeevy?

I'm still not gonna buy in your store you fuckers.
This is about the most consumer-friendly move EGS has done, but the underlying motive is the same skeeziness that brought about all the shit everyone hates, like bribing devs into exclusivity when they'd already promised Steam availability at launch. If automatic price-protection crediting becomes a standard and isn't just a short-term grab by EGS, I'll be happy to see it come about, don't get me wrong.
yeah good luck make me buy in your store epic because i literally still can't buy anything from you. the store does infinity loading time everytime i try to purchase something. even if it's free
Yeahhhh…. This still isn't going to bring me over to buying BL3. Maybe if you didn't have a manchild running Gearbox then I'd think about it but
PRE-PURCHASE RUB 999.00 WITH RUTRACKER DISCOUNT: RUB 0.00 ;)
I would totally be down for buying a shitload of games if I could buy it in Rubles. back in the day you could buy things off the Mexico Origin store and get brand new things for less than half of the retailer price and it was as simple as changing domain name
