For trans people, gender-swap photo filters are no mere game

The thing is when articles mention "outrage", they're generally taking a insignificantly small yet vocal subsection of the LGBT community, probably the ones who bark bullshit jargon about how "the hets" are ruining pride parades or some shit, and presenting them as if they're representing the greater LGBT community.
These articles do nothing but strengthen the opinions of transphobes and people who hold similar opinions, and just widen the gap to normalization of LGBT ideas in society
And they just fucking deadname her.
What cunts.
Yeah, I'm not sure how I missed that but this article has even more issues than it initially appears to.
On one hand, Elliott is starting to be used as a gender neutral name. There's a possibility they mean Ellie as a nickname.
On the other hand, that's only a slim possibility. Mentioning "they go by Ellie" in an article about being trans is very unlikely to just be mentioning a nickname.
It's not some cultural revolution where trans people will be beloved and accepted by all because of a random Snapchat filter, but its effect -- however small -- is far more likely to be positive than negative, with regards to the stigma around breaking gender norms.
Huh, honestly I'm super impressed with the filter from a technical perspective, but regardless of that I only thought this filter would be nothing but a positive for transgendered people
It mostly is, but trans people being happy doesn't make the news. Making them all look like snowflakes/freaks is the real bait.
Very true.
I'm more offended that it doesn't work on me because i have a beard, making me look like some kinda smooth Slitheen from Doctor Who
If anything, you'd think people with dysphoria would love this.
r/egg_irl has a lot of memes due to that filter. People have been "cracking" over it and I see it as more positive thing than negative. Probably another cause of loud people getting their voice out instead of the majority of people who are for it or don't simply care.
also the filter makes me look pretty hot.
It evokes or worsens dysphoria in some. I've also seen trans friends saying that it's helped their dysphoria, though, so it's obviously not a universal response.
Hopefully they don't end up removing the filters. I like jerking off to myself.

Does an admirable job stripping out neckbeard. I think it made me even fatter though.
People need to remember that context and intent are things. Just because something can look potentially offensive doesn't mean it automatically is.
It's like yelling at someone in public for drinking milk and saying it's racist because the drink is white.
I think it's been said, but this is digging to the bottom of the barrel. Not that I'm worldly or anything, but I'm part of quite a few trans communities and I've literally not seen one person complain about this. The outrage is by no means even remotely widespread. That being said, it feels like this article is hella bare bones. Also shoutout to it dead naming one of their only trans sources.
For-profit "news" will never not be garbage. That's why right-wingers who complain that we don't hold CNN and other "liberal" news outlets to the same standards as Fox News have no leg to stand on. Because yeah, we fucking do.
i tried the filter and i didnt look cute at all
this sucks
Don't 90% of snapchat filters make you look like a girl anyway? Where was the issue then?
man I felt even more connected with trans culture when I felt good about how I looked as a woman with this filter and seeing this reaction really brings me down
might explain my terrible girl look i had glasses on
It actually does occasionally, remember that there's also a bias here with certain users repeatedly posting articles that paint trans people In a very negative light.
Edited:
Also this filter makes me look young as hell for some reason
Only if you already kinda do.
It made me look fatter, and that's about it.
I no want to stay the fat ;~;
Very brave. So inspiring.
boy i sure do love the phrasing on the article: "for trans people", totally not passively presenting the opinions of a few people who happen to be trans as the majority consensus opinion in the trans community as a whole in a way that gives them plausible deniability when accused of doing so!
nope, no problem here at all, no way this will subconsciously strengthen the association of trans people with emotionally stunted weak bratty snowflakes!
solid journalism, right there!
The article is 2 people they said they interviewed and only 1 is a negative. Jeff c'mon man. Other clickbait articles at least put 4 angry tweets from random nobodies
The title of this article alone is damaging enough to trans people, it's not for trans people, it's for some of the vocal minority, I imagine the majority of trans people don't give a flying fuck and just see it as an app', a bit of fun, like everyone should.
How do you go for equality and understanding when journalists do this kind of stupid shit that fucks it up, smart people will see through it but stupid people will read it and be like, "Wow, trans people are fucking babies."
As soon as I heard about it I knew some people would pitch a fit. Personally, as a trans-leaning individual, it makes me uncomfortable. But I know that's just my personal hangups, not the filter. People need to learn to deal.
What's funny is I found out about this through a trans friend sharing their pics on Facebook.
