It's not trying to.
They're not trying to compete. I don't get how so many people aren't getting this? It's not a handheld competitor, its not a brand new console which aims to change the way games are played, it's a little novelty item for people who love indie games and want to try something different, new and experimental. The people that its aiming to please aren't kids who are wanting to pick up a handheld or adults who need something to play on their way to work/holidays, its for (god I hate saying it this way because makes me sound 50 miles up my own ass) "connoisseurs". Stop thinking of it as a traditional console, its a lil experimental art piece, just like a lot of indie games. I agree the $150 is steep tho.
I think people get that this is for a very specific public and is not competing with Nintendo or Sony, but $150 for a black-white screen without a backlight and 12 "experimental games" is nonsense. Why we consider this an "art piece" but not those Chinese ripoffs that you can buy for $5? The crank? That's not even new, the Dreamcast had the Fishing Controller. The indie games? Yeah, let's forget about what happen to the Ouya. The original Game Boy released released with a price tag of $90... on 1989! The only "appeal" of this thing is "I like it because is different" kind of people or collectors that fall for the "Stock will be very limited *wink* *wink*" trick. How the fuck this thing cost 150 dollars? If they really want something appealing for game developers, maybe add more buttons, different kinds of ports like USBs for controllers and remove that stupid and gimmicky crank. Maybe a cheap but nice looking version of something like this: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/184903/01ce3433-bb57-4347-82eb-81200f274551/PandoraFront.JPG
$150 is not really that expensive for something like this considering the target demographic
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/246855/daf6ac11-6003-4d8c-93e5-64efea7ec511/image.png Tbh this actually looks totally reasonable and given the era it was made in this would actually look normal sure it's bulky as shit but it's far better than that trash-fire below it, and still better yet than that procedurally generated turd above it

rami talks too much.
ah yes, such shallow streamer bait games like VVVVVV
People need/want a $150 Game Boy clone? I am curious, what target demographic are we talking that 150 bucks isn't expensive for this thing?
that wasn't Bennett Foddy, you'd be thinking of Terry Cavanagh

Yeah, that PS3 mock-up ain't bad, truthfully. Every now and then you get one that makes you go, "huh, that'd be pretty cool". I've always been partial to this one from the Wii's "Revolution" days: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/eb6cafab-b048-4039-8fd3-1c6153635d8d/image.png I was also a really big fan of this one for what would eventually become the Vita. Sorta like a sleeker, touch-enabled PSP Go. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/13685fff-2f67-45c4-8b0c-11448b6128a4/image.png
People spend 100s of dollars on special editions of videosgames. Do you seriously think that there's not a market for a limited edition handheld with exclusive games from famous videogame designers?
This take would make sense if it was being marketed as nostalgia bait or even an actual competitive console. But it's not, it's basically being marketed as a unique little toy that some developers known for being artsy/experimental are using to make... artsy and experimental games.
tbh if one is a developer too, they'd just look towards the Raspberry Pi and a 3D printed controller Far cheaper and entirely custom, can run emulation which unlocks literally thousands of free games, can even use a big screen.
Sure but that's still pretty far outside the scope of what's going on. The point wasn't to make a console that plays thousands of free games, the point was for this company to make a neat toy and then curate it with games from devs who are interested in this sort of thing.
mostly game journalists
I like how you guys think it's targeted towards you and are offended that it's not good enough for your delicate sensibilities They didn't make it for you
Stop thinking of it as a game console, start thinking of it as an art piece. it is a 150 dollar art piece. Actually pretty cheap for art imo
More like how to kill people with that spinning disc
Another things is If each game is on average the equivalent of a $5 indie game then the total cost of games would be $60, the actual console being about $90 which is pretty cheap for limited run tech/design.
Okay... yall do realise that this says stock is going to be very limited. I don't think they're going for commercial success and this seems more like a passion project if anything. Especially with them teaming up with Teenage Engineering I think this is going to be a lovely little conceptual piece of hardware.
