‘We as a species need to come to terms’ with CRISPR technology as China...

No they fucking wont
Here's what'll happen:
Porky gets his genetically perfect super babies to take over his businessess
They don't even touch the "inferiors" because they're icky poor people
After a few generations we have a wealthy genetic super caste that is basically unstoppable
They're not going to have SciFi telekinetic mind-reading powers since that's impossible, you put a 7.62mm in them and they go down.
Their position is given to them by society, and it can also be taken by society. This doesn't change that.
I fail to see how this future is any different from now.
Their position is given to them by society, and it can also be taken by society.
I mean, you say that, but is that really true? Look at the situation we in now, the massive disparity between the elite and corporations and normal everyday people. The super rich get away with shit no other person would and it's going to be the same if they somehow were genetically altered into ubermensch.
It'll work if every new generation keeps getting a higher level of education, and the values of democracy are instilled in them.
Taking America for an example, it hasn't been that long since slavery became illegal, attempts to end segregation began, and same-sex couples got the right to marry.
There's always going to be problems that need solving, so people need to keep pushing for change, but it should be possible to keep improving.
is genetic coding like regular coding with the bugs and whatnot? you add some better hair, oops 3 arms
Because society right now is based on a class system. If someone has money they are financially superior to you and can destroy you in multiple ways. But you can possibly get rich enough one day to hold power of your own.
In the future it could be a genetic caste system. People are physically and mentally superior than you, there is no catching up.
It's very different. We live in a lie that anyone can get rich if they work hard enough, a very very small amount do make that a reality. Rewriting your own genes to catch up with corporate demigods is even more impossible.
You're thinking forward one single generation.
What the fuck is with all this talk about superhuman rich people when this is about single-gene knockouts/replacements with what is the equivalent of performing surgery with a machete?
Like fuck we've been using zinc-finger nuclease based editing for years and there's no fuckin' superhuman rich peoples. And that's ignoring the fact that such a broad amount of edits to become superhuman would lead to ocongenesis and other defects, nor do things like intelligence and strength seem to have a singular genetic basis.
Y'all dumbasses need to stop reading fiction and get your heads out of the ground.
Nobody said anything about sci-fi, all I'm saying is that they will make themselves smarter than the average joe, and being above average ontop of their wealth will make it considerably harder for their family to fall out of wealth.
And youre just as naive assuming you know what this tech might be like in a few decades.
The ethical concern exists and is worth talking about, even if it represents a tiny avantage or none.
As long as the average bloke will think that "genetically perfect human" is a concept that can exist or be achieved, the concept of gene editing is going to be dangerous.
That's not how genetics work. That's not how mutations work.
