You sure? I remember reading that they overperformed their opening weekend projections, at least in the first two days. Must just be that expensive?
A serious remake of atlantis could be glorious if they took it seriously. there's so much potential to that world, and the direct to video sequel xpanded a lot on it and was actually pretty damn good. By far my fav disney I hope they do something with it someday.
The crystal being a metaphor for atomic power is just, well a level of subtext you never see in disney flicks.

Fine, I'll accept payment with this, then.
they already made the perfect live action treasure island film

of course it was going to be
to be fair, atlantis is basically just the movie Stargate and some of the show as well.
not at all what happened but okay lol
I did
It was actually good
I don't think any Disney live action remake has failed so far. Don't see why Aladdin would be the exception.
I think the surprise comes from expectations from the roasting of blue smith
Dumbo did IIRC
Oh yeah Dumbo existed. I retract my claim.
I saw it today and I actually liked it. the songs I heard on their own, made more sense seeing and hearing them on screen. I enjoyed Will Smith as Genie because he wasn't trying to be Robin Williams' Genie, he made the role his own and did his own spin on it. I thought it was a decent watch
"Good fun for the whole family."
By 'family' you mean your 3-year-old then yeah "fun".
I was going to say but I didn't know enough about Dumbo to dispute it
Dumbo was so far removed from the source material that it was bound to burn in a fire
I heard this movie didn't have snake-jaffar why would anyone go see it without fucking snake jaffar???
As far as I know, many people enjoyed Will's performance as well. Obviously nothing can ever replace the old RW, but it's a great job nonetheless

Does Iago talk in this version or is he just a parrot?
With the current live action remakes, there's little reason to believe that they will be.
disney heard representation in media was cool and wanted to get in on it
Ah yes, the company that made Mulan, Princess and the Frog, Pocahontas, Aladdin, and Lilo and Stitch are just now getting in on the representation train.
not even just first party productions but among the scope of shit they are on top of lol
representation
re-presentation
oh lol
The animation was necessary to those films, unless uncanny CGI is your thing.
Damn, really? I was already disappointed that hobo Jafar didn't seem to be in it.
Ouch, right in the feels... Funny you mention that, Musker and Clements worked on both Treasure Planet and the original Aladdin.
Treasure Planet was a case of really bad marketing for a really good movie. It was released in theaters around the same time as THE SECOND HARRY POTTER FILM and somehow managed to make less money at the box office than The Santa Clause 2 for fuck's sake. It is proof that making something like a good movie is only half the story, while the other half is marketing.
I really hope that Treasure Planet makes a good comeback someday.
What are you on about? If the estimates are correct than its definitely broken even. A film doesn't need to make back all it's money on the first weekend,it's unrealistic to think that.

But yeah, movie theaters are becoming less and less known as movie theaters and more as Disney theaters among the general audience. Pity.
Aladdin is doing as well as it is because it's making bank off of nostalgia.
And it's not like, a terrible movie or anything, it just doesn't have the same charm as the animated version. Same goes for all the live action remakes, you cant capture the same energy in live action as you can with an animated cast.
As soon as the Beauty and the Beast remake made over a billion dollars, we should have known this was coming. It was proof to Disney that they don't actually have to try to do anything different with these remakes - like they did to an extent with Jungle Book. They can just remake them frame for frame, throw in a few plot embellishments that genrally make the story and themes worst and seem to exist solely to address modern day internet criticisms of the original movies (Hey, CinemaSins here: you heard that Beauty and the Beast depicts stockholme syndrome?).... and voila, you print money.
Creative bankruptcy only succeeds if the public rewards it. And sadly, the public generally loves rewarding creative bankruptcy. You know why Acitvision releases a new Call of Duty every single year? Because it prints money. You know why Minions made a billion dollars and is getting a fucking sequel,, while Laika's wonderful films barely ever break even at the box office? Same reason. And so on and so forth. If this ever stops, it only will because people voted with their wallets for it to stop.
