Polygon- Anti-loot box bill poses a real threat to sports video games

Probably because this is the only example I've seen of them shilling for a corporation? Take it on an author by author basis as this Owen guy seems like a shit, but there are good writers on Polygon, Kotaku, and other sites that people blanket hate.
Not even slightly surprised that this is coming from Polygon tbh.

Posted in LMAO pics earlier by @Euskalduna but deffo belongs here.
Electronic Arts has used money to prevent competition in terms of sports licenses in the past when they've been losing, they don't deserve any entertainment of their greed.
dear lord that means they'll make 300 million off FIFA instead of 800 million off fifa, how will they ever survive
I definitely think that legislating video game monetization could lead to unintended consequences but if the steepest cost we have to pay is that publishers will have to figure out less predatory ways of extracting profit from their products then I'm not even sure that qualifies as a downside.
I appreciate the symbolism behind it but I can't help but feel like the governments are gonna fuck it up somehow and leave glaring loopholes that end up changing nothing about the actual problem at heart.
Saw another article whining about this on Gamasutra saying the terms for what games would be affected are too broad, but IMO it's a good think if loot boxes are banned from as many games as possible. It's not like there aren't other methods of F2P monetization that don't involve pseudo gambling.
it seems like its a feature of capitalism that we instantly rush to defend exploitive industries instead of actually evaluate them equally. The point of the bill is to stop exploiting kids with loot boxes, if sports games use the very same business model then they too are exploiting kids
I get the impression that at least some of the appeal is gambling for the players, lol.
Like those Japanese mobile games, except for sports fans, instead of trying to amass a harem of .jpg waifus, they're trying to collect football/soccer players.
By laying off staff, of course.
Sure but the majority of those people have big fat resumes and other ties in the industry and have no problem finding other jobs. Not mention anyone who works for a AAA game studio will have enough savings to coast for a month or two easily.
*An error has occurred while processing your cheque from EA. Luckily for you, for a limited time you can continue shilling for another opportunity to get paid!*
how ever will featureless fifa compete against the goliath of interactivity that is football simulator now that the most purchased game on playstation several years in a row won't get lootboxes
"I sure love having to pay extra money for an advantage or shelling out for basic features." -no sports game player ever
He's saying you sound like a shill. Which you kinda do. The people that usually get laid off are people seem as expendable. It's naive to think that everyone will just be okay.
I mean that's fair I just come from the mindset that layoffs are am everyday reality for anyone working in the entertainment industry, especially one as volatile and shifting as the game industry. If layoffs happen in spite of a studio trying it's best it's a tragedy, but if it has to happen as the result of giant megacorporations like EA and Ubisoft having to fix their business models to be more fair to consumers then so be it.
Still I'm optimistic that publishers will come up with new ways to monetize their games that don't prey on peoples' addictive tendencies, so I don't think it'll hurt them that bad. I think the battlepass concept is a good next step that F2P games are already taking advantage of and IMO the Lootbox was already on its way out.
I've never been one to give a shit for sports games, but IMHO a sports game with custom generated athletes would be baller as shit.
