Given the sheer scale of the infrastructure required to actually run Youtube, I wouldn't be shocked if they were actually telling the truth. Youtube isn't just hosting your videos after all, that's relatively cheap. It's pretty much constantly re-encoding everything that gets uploaded to it into a bonkers number of formats to ensure that everyone gets some semblance of access to the content. They're running shitloads of statistical analysis in the background constantly for billions of videos to handle things like ~~the algorithm~~ All of this is very computationally expensive, and therefore quite monetarily expensive.

I've replied once to this post but I'm coming back to it because apparently left wing channels do routinely get demonitized for the content they upload. I'm curious to know what @Stev means by mainstream. Moderate, or popular? Trump, for example, is a large part of mainstream discourse, being that he has the most central role in all of government, but the phrase "Trump is a moderate" would have you laughed out of the room. The ways in which he's mainstream do nothing to change the fact his positions are very often extreme. Carlson too is popular, but moderate? He routinely uses the language of war to describe immigration - calling Mexico a hostile foreign power; saying immigrants have "plundered" America; calling them "invaders" and saying "this is how countries collapse"; fearmongering about Mexico trying to change America's demographics; on Europe, again ranted invasion and changing demographics; saying immigration policy is driven by "a vested interest in changing the population" - and the racial tones are not only present but undeniable. Carlson has both downplayed and normalized the existence of far-right extremism, saying there are virtually no white nationalists in the US, and praising Alex Jones, Laura Loomer and Milo as prominent conservatives. He essentially denies that implicit bias exists, and paints any efforts to acknowledge it as an attack on whites, implying bias training is Jim Crow for the white population, and saying it's "beneath" debate. When hosting infamous racist Steve King, Carlson said "everything is defensible and probably right" on King's comments that "we can't restore our civilization with someone else's babies". Tucker has defended European colonization, and said criticisms of it are "an attack on civilization". This is what Derek Black, former white supremacist and the son of Stormfront's founder, had to say about Carlson: It's really, really alarming that my family watches Tucker Carlson's show once and then watches it on the replay because they feel that he is making the white nationalist talking points better than they have and they're trying to get some tips on how to advance it.

Being profitable and generating a ton of value are two different things, there's a lot of stuff that don't get any money home but it still insanely valuable to the company that owns it.
