Lego releases their biggest set ever, the 7500 piece $800 Millennium falcon

I paid 400$, inspected for another year. Been driving it for 6 months. 2004 echo
I love how it's replacing a different Millennium Falcon as the most expensive set.
My family's early 00's no-frills Camry got totaled and they managed to sell the mangled wreck for like 600 bucks to someone who wanted it for scrap. I can't imagine what Liem's 400 dollar jalopy must be like
oh what wondrous anxiety inducing sounds it makes.
back on topic: imagine completing it and then dropping it.
As cool as it looks I'd still rather get four modular city sets for that price and make a street.

I only own this one but it's probably my favorite set.
The modular city sets are cool as fuck. These are also the ones that really skyrocket in value over time because they're limited editions and they're also extremely popular.

I've always wanted to go apeshit with LEGO sets and build basically an entire town/monorail since I was a kid, and these modular designer-piece houses are just stroking that flame even hotter.
I may hold off on upgrading my computer for another year or so so I can buy four or five of these swank LEGO kits instead. I don't know if that means I've matured as an adult or I'm maturing backwards. :v:

Let me guess, rusted out underbody?

Needed new rocker panels, then it got reinspected. I got a stupid good deal

I had a pair of the first modular city sets, the bigger one was 140 USD retail I think and the other was 100. The bigger one is now worth about 3000 sealed, up to 1000 if it's used/out of the box. I sold mine for like 700 bucks, earning back its original value and then some. I'm working on selling the other set now, which has similar value. You could easily justify purchasing a few of the newer modular city sets (while they're still in retail stores) by thinking about them as long-term investments rather than one-time money sinks.
I'm going to buy two. One to assemble and one to leave sealed, due to guaranteed collectibility.
I do and don't regret doing that, but if you hold onto them for 5+ years and don't manage to lose or destroy it in the meanwhile you will most definitely make money with it. Way back, I received the UCS 10030-1 Imperial Star Destroyer for my 10th Christmas and the UCS 10019-1 Rebel Blockade Runner for my 11th. They were the absolute pinnacle of my collection and they were literally the only things I received for those two Christmases; not even socks or underwear or a shitty turtleneck sweater to go along with it, but I didn't fucking care I built the damn things naked and enjoyed every damn second of it. The RBR even came in a sketchy unlabeled black box with just the picture of the ship in a black and white color scheme for some reason (In the film they are white and red). I built them, played with them for weeks, let them gather dust on a shelf for a few years, then the shelf collapsed and destroyed them. I put the mixed parts in a trash bag and have lost it since, but still have the manual for the ISD somewhere back at the folks' house.
Another 10 years later to my surprise, I came across one on Ebay and was seeing the ISD being auctioned and bid on for over $3k! The RBR was going for about the same maybe a bit less, both unopened. Now they are hard to find outside of sketchy resellers opened or not.
I regret at the very least not keeping the parts so I could reassemble them and put it in my new house as a memento to how fucking cool and important Lego's were to my childhood, but I definitely do not regret the joy of building them.
Also to note, holy shit Lego's have gotten way expensive recently. Even the small kits are like $100 walking into a Lego store.
What the fuck do you drive, a go-kart?
Probably something >20 years old and ridiculously common. I'm in a similar situation, drive a pickup from '85, it's only worth ~$500 at most.
I can see this being on most Christmas wishlists this year.
This costs twice as much as my car holy shit
In same boat.
Got 2001 mk4 golf 1.4l petrol and I am having trouble selling it for 300 Euro. (Works and runs fine).
Was reading this earlier and I thought to myself "My eldest brother is a Star Wars nut, he would totally by one of these" and lo and behold an hour or so later one of my other siblings tipped him off about it and he said that yes, he would get one.

This is the face of a man who is happy with his life choices
You know, I could've sworn something like this has already existed for a while. Maybe I'm just crazy? There was that time Harrison Ford dropped someone's huge-ass Lego Millenium Falcon, and I remember seeing sets around online for it before that isn't this one
Maybe it was an older collector's set, who knows.

The problem with being an adult is having enough money to buy all the shit that you couldn't as a kid, but having the better judgement to know that it's a waste of money

Unless it's a hobby that you enjoy, then it's not a waste of money.

I had the original "Collector's Edition" Millennium Falcon, it was the previous most expensive (and 2nd largest after the Taj Mahal)
There have been like 6 or 7 Millennium Falcons released total though.
Huh, thought the Star Destroyer was the biggest, although I guess they could skimp on parts for the inside with that one. I had the little Star Destroyer (the one that came with mini-figures) but was never crazy or rich enough to get the bigger $1000 one, odd that this one is cheaper by $200 yet contains more parts, maybe they've finally gotten saner about their prices.
I really wanted this set, but of course we get fucked over in Australia again

Yeah Lego costs mad money, a bit too much for me to justify buying it for myself. My girlfriend normally gets me a set for birthday and Xmas though
I misread "Millennium" as "million" for a second and wasn't too surprised by the idea of a Lego set costing $800,000,000.
I used to get Lego magazines every month, at one point even receiving 2 per month, and would just look at them for fun. It's so strange how expensive they all are, the last time I flipped through a magazine I quickly noticed how movie tie-ins (and other cross-promotions) are always the most expensive sets and pieces.
That kit is just gorgeous...

Licensing costs as far as I know, and they've only gone up sadly.

I hate this idea that oh I'm an adult now so I can't buy this because it's a waste of money. Like the only people who think it's a waste of money are people who wouldn't want it in the first place. All that matters is whether spending the money is a waste to you. If anything it's going to make me feel more secure in my enjoyment of something because I thought it over and decided it was worth such a steep price to me.
This is all assuming, of course, that you're not destroying your disposable income, and you're not buying these sort of big things all the time.

Specifically, Disney licensing costs. Especially if said product is Star Wars. Sets from themes like Minecraft are priced far more reasonably in comparison. The video below breaks this down in full:

It's not my hobby, but even for my hobbies I have to hold off buying expensive stuff. If Lego was my hobby, $800 would still be a waste at my current income. I have like 1200 in savings rn and haven't worked in 2 weeks. I wouldn't dream of spending $800 on anything other than essentials.

My hobby involves constantly buying computer parts, I don't get stuff for my hobby very often.
Good lord does Lego price gouge. What kind of profit are the making on one of those? $700 at least. I have loved Legos since I was a child but that price seems totally ridiculous.
