all of em
What is this even supposed to mean?
He talked his wife into shooting him with a 50 cal gun using only a book for protection. What do you think he might convince his children to do?
what about the kid? Is the same moron who agreed to this stunt going to be raising a child as well? Well, I guess not if she's going to prison, at least.
Ignoring for a second how dumb this is... Why didn't he just shoot a book first to see if it worked?
Probably the only book he owned.
Doubt he was much of a reader if he's dumb enough to have someone shoot him.
I'm inclined to think they got the idea from a film, and the film in turn got the idea from the world war 1 and 2 stories where bibles in chest pockets did, on occasion, stop a bullet.
But just because some people got lucky doesnt mean you should try it yourself with what ever gun you have.
What made them think a 50 cal bullet wouldn't penetrate a book. Like, why do we even bother with body armour when we got Bibles?
Because god protects dude. Duh. Fuckin' godless heathens.
In all honesty it was probably a .50 Cal cap and ball revolver, not. .50AE desert eagle or something of the like. A .50 cap and ball is shooting a projectile much slower (700-800fps range) than what's previously mentioned.
The Right book can stop plenty of different rounds. I've shot AK-47's into a phone book and it stopped the round about 3/4ths the way through. That's also a very dense book, with hundreds upon hundreds of pages.
Regardless of all of that however the notion of just doing that sort of thing was highly irresponsible. This is exactly why you don't do anything along these lines, because people have (and in this case did) die.

From what I heard [someone knew the guy personally on another forum and linked to his youtube account] it was a .50AE desert eagle.

Local news source confirmed it was a desert eagle.
Still, a 50AE would have been stopped by a phone book had it hit dead center. Doesn't stop the fragments from following up the pages though.

Not to mention if there's one thing that YouTube isn't lacking, it's people shooting bibles with various types of bullets, they could have easily done some searching and realized that maybe being behind the bible when shooting it isn't a good idea.
.22 is a super scary caliber to me because the wounds it creates will kill your ass despite what people think
.22's are a hitman's round of choice. It has enough penetration and power to go through the skull, but not enough to go through it again, so it bounces around inside slicing up the brain
Fucking gruesome
But there's different types of .22. You can catch non LR ones to the head and it get lodged in your skull, even at point blank range in some spots, and you'll be fine. Well, as fine as being hit in the head with a bullet allows

Man, imagine having to tell that story to your kids.
I don't even feel a little bit sorry for anyone involved, sad to say. Everyone involved here is a complete fucking idiot.

I think range might have something to do with it, either that or you are shooting at an angle.
As a video shows here the bullet penetrated through 3 phone books:

I don't know what kind of book he was holding, but no way it was going to help him in any way or reduce the velocity of the bullet enough to help him in any way
Darwinism in action - but as stupid and pointless as this death was, what's the point in charging her? It's not as though she had any malicious intent here and at this point she's already lost the father of her children, so what good will sentencing their mother do? Let this serve as a hard lesson and leave it at that.

I think it's to maybe reflect on her actions, don't point and shoot a loaded gun at someone if they ask you to. It's pretty dumb of her, she is going to need some time to grieve as well but that was some stupid shit
Don't they tell gun owners that they should only aim and have their finger on the trigger unless they intend to destroy the target? Or am I thinking Military or NRA..

Prevent her from being coaxed into more stupid shit in the future
Would you rather he taught them how to be idiots?
And to clarify, if it wasn't him, it would have been their children later on down the line. Now at least the mother won't be making any mistakes like this again.

Aren't these basically the same thing?

A .22 will not "bounce around in your skull" that's fuddlore

I can totally see it entering and then ricocheting on the other side of the skull, or entering and twisting itself and getting stuck in the brain.

good thing that's not how dynamics works
Why would you test a book to protect you from a high caliber bullet and not something stronger like iron or steel? Has he never seen Yoshimbo/A Fist Full of Dollars/Back to the Future Part 3?
Teddy Roosevelt had an eyeglass case in addition to a thick paper speech that prevented a bullet from killing him.
It's a shame the Darwin Awards website isn't updated anymore because this is the most Darwin Award worthy story since that guy in Florida jumped into a river with alligators because the sign told him not to.
Like Ross Scott said, "I know I'm a genius, but is everyone else really this stupid?"
50-caliber handgun to his girlfriend to shoot at a book, thinking the book would stop the bullet.
Didn't think to do a fucking test run first you retards?
All for the sake of viewers
They could have done ANYTHING else and they would have get viewers anyway, like I don't know, fart loudly. People watch anything these days.
This was fucking retarded.
Why do people treat the .22 as a BB gun alternative only good for plinking cans and busting squirrel skulls? If I recall, it's hugely dangerous against unprotected soft tissue. The small round lacks penetration necessary to simply punch through a body, so it instead begins tumbling due to impact with muscles, bones, cartilage and other denser materials, being affected even by thicker clothing and causing massive tissue and organ trauma should the round successfully ricochet or be bounced by something straight through any of the numerous vital organs in our bodies. The way I worded this sounds like the bullet wildly bounces around - it doesn't. A single bullet only has enough kinetic energy to enter and then most likely just do one of the above if you get unlucky. If someone were to have a fully automatic .22 rifle and they squeezed the trigger, the results would be drastically more varied, as you can imagine.
A .22 seems puny compared to other rounds, but a single round in the chest can still kill you.
Not sure why it wasn't done on YouTube Live though
