Tracking the headset with the cameras sounds like a great idea until you realize you can't track the controllers outside their limited field of view, which I'm guessing would get annoying real fast
IIRC that's one of the ways some companies tried to get hand tracking to work and it was fucking awful
IIRC that's one of the ways some companies tried to get hand tracking to work and it was fucking awful
It's how the windows mixed reality (but actually VR) headsets work, the cameras have a wide field of view and they're on the edge of the headset so they track with a lot more range than you'd expect, but it is of course much worse than lighthouse or outside-in camera tracking.
I imagine it's likely just adding extra fidelity to the tracking if anything, I doubt they'd replace their current solution whole cloth.
They don't really fit in with a sensor fusion strategy in any way with the existing hardware, as has been said previously if anything they'll be used for camera pass-through or room scanning for detecting obstacles and interaction. Currently the vive uses its front facing camera to give you a green matrix outline of the real world when you get close when enabled, I imagine they're planning on enhancing the features of that.
