TIL there are people still playing Pokemon Go a year later
I've always maintained that Pokemon GO is less of a game and more of a timed experience, in July last summer. Whilst the app still exists, the mechanics are largely the same and it's definitely improved, the core experience of Pokemon GO for most people was tied in with the fact that it was this massive zeitgeist and in the town centre in July 2016 I saw 8 year olds on BMXs playing it alongside old people who barely understood how to use a smartphone joining in. That's part of the experience is what made Pokemon GO for most people, and it's a part that'll never come back.
I will always remember the first months. Meeting with people and socializing was a thing i'd never forget.
It's really a shame this completely disappeared afterward because Niantic fucking suck at taking care of the game properly. And this other fuck up is just another proof why this game died for many.

I find it hard to blame Niantic, it was inevitable that the game died. The game mechanics were totally irrelevant, the real life going places and seeing people, this entire unity between everyone was pretty impressive. The moment people stopped playing it the game died, and even if it was amazing as a game people would've stopped playing it: kids went back to school, hype doesn't last forever, the weather got colder. All these factors that are outside of the game Niantic can't control, at the end of the day as an AR game with almost no mechanics literally all the value that came from it was derived from real life rather than the game itself.
it's not Nintendos brand though
Prove it then
Show us the facts
I don't get it? Facepunch is literally the only place I hear this. I otherwise would think it was a successful hit.
Lets be fair, its a pretty one hit wonder
like it was great at first and exactly the thing Nintendo needed
but the nosedive to a much lower player base is why people bash on it
It's fucking insane how little Niantic do.
What the fuck are they even working on? The amount of content they've released in the past year is laughable.

Apparently they're working on some Harry Potter GO app if i heard correctly. :v:
I am so confused about how nintendo stuff fucks up so easily.
Also what's the con even for? Do they just have a ton of pokestops and shit there?

it isn't Nintendo's game

it was meant to be an exclusive event where people would get the first chance to access lugia as well as some other rarer pokemon in the park, along with events and music and stuff like that.

they've already made millions off the little work they do. they feel no desire to pump out quality functional content.
I keep coming back to this game now and again, reasons being I'm just really into Pokemon in general and I like the concept of it so I keep holding out hope that Niantic will eventually get it together and update the game into a respectable state and stop breaking things
but
I think the fact that they screwed this event up this badly is gonna be my wake-up call that that's probably never gonna happen
[editline]23rd July 2017[/editline]
It's a shame, too, because the last big update they did really did start to breathe a bit of life back into the game. Obviously it wasn't anywhere near like it was last summer, but I met a lot of other players through the raid system and it was starting to be kind of fun for me again
Bummer, I guess
It's unlikely, albeit they still seem to be updating the game, just incredibly slowly.
One of the partnered YouTubers gave his thoughts on the event, but let slip some info on what happened behind the scenes, since he was working with Niantic there:

tl;dr: It turns out Niantic did contact all cell providers in the area and warned them about the capacity of the event, also asked for portable cell towers to be brought to the park. Every provider basically went "pssh we can handle it" and didn't even bother sending portable towers.
Knowing that info, it makes sense now why Niantic didn't try to set up wifi instead; they had assurance from every major provider that it would be fine.

That's still pretty ridiculous to do, though - penny pinching at the cost of company PR. I'm very surprised that an event of this scale would've just been been entrusted to organizations out of their direct control without any contingency.

Proof that cell providers are fucking stupid.

Guess who decided to start publicly pointing fingers. (Hint: it's Verizon)
They're saying it was a problem with Niantic's severs and that they had properly increased network capacity at the event.
But, then why was my aunt, a Verizon customer, unable to access other internet apps outside the game? Why was my friend on T-Mobile slightly more successful at connecting to the game? Really makes you think....

Verizon is a deplorable company. I'm so glad I switched from them, they really do not give a shit at all.
