Grey said the problem with Valve's structure is "no one knows anthing". He had an anecdote, he went to Valve once and asked devs about Source 2, devs kept saying "talk to this guy" until they went in circles.
Well, this explains a lot.
Your acting like Valve is run by mafia crime gangs and has cliques set up throughout the office that some areas are so volatile to go through, you need body armour
With how California and the tech industry works right now, I wouldn't be surprised if there are cliques and cabals of every conceivable kind within the company. The insistent hipsters, the paranoid conservotards, the angry feminists, the projecting gender-fanatics, the entitled incels and stuck between all of those are the people who go outside out of office hours and just want to get something done within the decade. The gaming industry is littered with people who have absolutely zero emotional control and are abrasively stupid at observing standard social courtesies like not verbally assaulting people they disagree with, not bullying those who deviate from the office culture and just generally not cutting people off. Conservatives think being a cunt is cool because you're just "telling it like it is" and the liberals are all having a fit at the "boo boo word of the week" which somehow no one has the passcode to get early and 90% of the time is something harmless and doesn't even belong in the context within which they deem it harmful. The tech industry is retarded as fuck right now. If valve really is as flat as the rumours say, I can guarantee you that it's an anarchistic wasteland of office ego's working harder to tear each other down than to build something as a team.
Well, this explains a lot.
Imagine when Gabe finally summons everyone for an important meeting and no one has a damn clue of what they are doing. Jesus.
Imagine when Gabe finally summons everyone for an important meeting and no one has a damn clue of what they are doing. Jesus.
Imagine getting paid top dollar for sitting in the offices of the most influential gaming corporation and not knowing anything.
Valve makes a shit ton of money off steam. There's no reason for anyone to do actual work because money is flowing and will continue to flow as long as steam exists
I trust in Gray Newell!
I trust in Gray Newell!
This guy is the next generation of the great company Valve used to be
You're telling me that people that run a company decided to fire some employees for being too productive. I feel like information is missing or skewed, that makes no sense at all.
This isn't unheard of in standard heirachy companies, it's not exclusive to the "flat" management structure Valve are trying to maintain. If a new employee starts overperforming relative to the senior employees they feel inferior and eventually will see it as a threat to their continued employment. If those guys have the ability to impact the hiring and firing process, they'll take advantage of that. Failing that they may make life harder for the newer guys until they quit. It's more an office environment problem than anything, senior employees can get complacent with their job and just start putting minimal effort in due to nepotism. Shockingly, people don't like it when someone upstages them.
I tried to post this to r/gaming, but it got insta removed :/
If is not HL3, it will be bad.
-All Valve employees, family and friends can get all Steam games for free
I don't think this is actually true beyond a select few employees. Friends of Valve employees I know have the "Valve Friends And Family Complimentary" pack, which is essentially the Valve Complete Pack that also includes any future games they make.
Your steam link on FP doesn't work. Edit: Seems FP is just being bad.
Hm, fp want a custom id link, but I don't use a custom one, hold on I'll make one edit: fixed now, why were you going to my profile? edit: your profile link is messed up too, in the fp id section just type in the custom id, not the whole url

I was just curious that's all.
It's apparently really shitty to work in their open environment. There are no walls, it's just open space in their whole office which means that you can never have a "private" conversation to talk quietly with somebody about an idea without hearing others or getting heard by others. There is no form of privacy in their offices due to these missing walls. They have a voting system where enough people need to vote to get somebody out of the company. Apparently it happened to people at Valve that worked harder than others and the ones in power didn't like that and wanted to have a more laid back atmosphere. So they used their influence to get people to vote them out of the company.
This is totally untrue FYI. I've toured multiple floors of Valve's Bellevue HQ and there are walls and offices and conference rooms just like normal office spaces.
Don't know how many people have this ability, but Gray said he can just go to a game's store page and the option to buy will be replaced with "add game".
Similar to the game reviewer accounts then, they have access to all games. It's why Funhaus started Steam Roulette/Wheelhaus.
This is totally untrue FYI. I've toured multiple floors of Valve's Bellevue HQ and there are walls and offices and conference rooms just like normal office spaces.
it's mostly just people running with fake glassdoor reviews many of the posts in this thread are just saying these things as fact when many of them are sourced from either A) people furthering a weird anti-valve agenda by prentending to be ex-valve employees or B) actual ex-employees (a much more trustworthy source), but these ex-employees have a bias that must be taken into consideration. i'm not saying this is all untrue, just that a lot of the rumors have been exaggerated and taken as fact and it seems a lot of people don't care to do actual research because it aligns with their view of "new valve is bad". not that the opinion isn't substantiated otherwise, that's just what i'm seeing happen about the topic of valve's structure
Why funny how that shows up. When I was 16, I thought - hey I bet Gabe newell will have son who maybe gets inspired to make games and takes over Valve one day and brings back business of making games. And now this article shows up.

Saying 'Grey Newell' out loud just makes it sound like Gabe got a new nickname after the destruction of Mother Base.
What kind of psychopath eats chicken noodle soup for breakfast?
well, an unhappy man :c
Why is everyone talking as if Valve is a kingdom to be inherited by some kid who has never worked there. It's like the most far out scenario. More believable is that retirees who own a stake gets bought out or that the company goes public and everyone just cashes in and puts the money elsewhere. I just don't see a kid who never worked a day at valve just out of the blue becoming the boss of the place. That's just so outlandish. [editline]29th January 2018[/editline]
I don't think they're the only ones projecting here...
You say that and for moment i ponder, but then i see that Jim Sterling put up his bi-hourly video on yet another Jordanian developer just utterly incapable of communicating beyond the level of a scorned 11-year-old, threatening legal action over his review of their own failed asset flip getting them removed from steam for the 5th time this week... The gaming industry, especially the indie scene, is riddled with anti-social people doing and saying anti-social shit and reacting in anti-social ways when they don't get to dictate what people can think and do. It's all self-serving and navel-gazing in nature.
