Gonna have to admit, that was the most painful minute of my life. Even more painful than the time I broke my femur.
The only thing I can recall as being "painful to watch" regarding video games was this one girl who tried playing Portal 2, and it took her a VERY long time to get past one of the early "here's how portals work!" levels, namely the one that's meant to show you that there is no set "entrance" and "exit" portal, they're interchangeable.
Watching people fail at puzzles is torture. Anyone remember this classic? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28lTUkNmdNg
Eesh, yeah, that one.
I honestly didn't think his performance was that big of a deal (granted, I never saw his own video where I'm assuming he's providing commentary about how it's the game's fault), but I can sheepishly say I've stumbled over very basic game mechanics before. Being unable to complete a seemingly benign task for several minutes isn't a rare occurrence.
In a tutorial?
theres a difference between being good at video games and not being able to complete a tutorial how can you trust someone's opinion on anything if they can't even read a basic instruction on the screen?
It's not even about reading instructions, it's about basic problem-solving skills. The first two times he realized he can't simply jump over the cylinder because it's too high should have been his first clue that he needed to jump off of something higher, and the inclusion of the explanation of the dash mechanic and how it works should have been enough for anyone to put 2 and 2 together and think "Oh, so I should try jumping off of the cube, then dash at the highest point of my jump?", and then it's a matter of timing.
Just remember. Game companies do pay attention.
"Surely people will figure this out, nobody can be THAT stupid-" *it happens* "Well fuck, guess we have to dumb it down after all."
Imagine games being dumbed down, and people like the guy who played Cuphead are still struggling despite being game journalists for years.
The bar is getting lowered even more now.
Maybe these people should just review movies. But they probably would look like trash against people who can actually critique properly. Not much competition with gaming journalism.

who thinks like that. the playtester goes "well the previous one was so linear so I assumed this was too." i have never, ever once thought to myself that if the old one was super linear, then so is this one, or vice-versa. it just boggles me that someone would think it's an exactly similar game. how stupid can you get.
who thinks like that. the playtester goes "well the previous one was so linear so I assumed this was too." i have never, ever once thought to myself that if the old one was super linear, then so is this one, or vice-versa. it just boggles me that someone would think it's an exactly similar game. how stupid can you get.
Well, to be fair, some people go to certain games for specific reasons. But yeah, that doesn't really excuse it.

I bet their playtesters at least understood the basic gameplay and control concepts of Half-Life. Confusing mazelike map design and not understanding how to jump and dash in midair in a platformer are two completely different things. The former is understandable to some extent - it's a maze. The latter... have you never played a platformer before? Cuphead didn't invent these controls.
I'm going to tell you guys right now, I got lost in that part too. The stress of hiding from the glowy Antlion Guard completely frazzled my navigating skills.
navigation error due to bad conveyance != inability to progress due to lack of critical thinking when presented with a box, a taller box, and literal instructions on screen
Sort of related but why doesn't the pigeon just fly up??
For pigeons, it's really hard and takes so much energy to actually jump up and fly when they're on the ground. That's why they rather sprint away if you came close to them first rather than just fly away
did this dude honestly say that the act of play is one of many ways of approaching a game
The funny thing about that argument is that if he wasn't desperately trying to defend himself from valid accusations of staggering incompetence, he might actually have something resembling a point. Let's Plays and streaming and such have changed the way a lot of people experience games, but this dude wasn't watching a Let's Play, now was he?
:mysterysolved:
i'm reminded of when kamiya talked about when they brought in kids to test viewtiful joe, and all they did was complain about every aspect of the game, so he vowed not to change anything
The best directors know when to listen to and when to ignore feedback
i'm reminded of when kamiya talked about when they brought in kids to test viewtiful joe, and all they did was complain about every aspect of the game, so he vowed not to change anything
Wasn't he also the guy who decided to make his game even harder after playtesters complained about how hard it was? I may be thinking of another developer.
Wasn't he also the guy who decided to make his game even harder after playtesters complained about how hard it was? I may be thinking of another developer.
Same occurrence. The kids thought it was too hard so he made it harder.
Same occurrence. The kids thought it was too hard so he made it harder.
Sort of relevant [t]http://i.imgur.com/LPqzBhu.jpg[/t]
I'm going to tell you guys right now, I got lost in that part too. The stress of hiding from the glowy Antlion Guard completely frazzled my navigating skills.
Getting turned around in a 3d environment is a totally different beast than a 2d environment though. In 2d you can see your entire surroundings easily. In 3d you can only see a small portion at any given time. So any point you need to quickly move around is easily disorienting, especially if you're focused on something unrelated to navigation itself. On the other hand though, failing to parse basic instructions and utilize anything even resembling critical thinking is totally on the player.
No, this is like automotive journalist being called unfit for his job because he can't drive manual.
That would still be enough to call someone unfit to be a car reviewer. But this is more akin to someone being an auto journalist and not having a license and being so bad at driving he can't make it across town in a car.
and being so bad at driving he can't make it across town in a car.
More like "can't get out of his own driveway" in this case. :v:
i'm reminded of when kamiya talked about when they brought in kids to test viewtiful joe, and all they did was complain about every aspect of the game, so he vowed not to change anything
He's not the only one
Let's be honest, nothing about Cuphead's tutorial area was a new concept in video games. A journalist should have seen the pattern immediately and knew what to do. This is really like someone not being able to read and starting a career in reviewing books.
It's more like a book reviewer having trouble reading a book synopsis because they cant understand the prose/vocabulary
