This is actually covered by the first episode of the Dirty Money series on Netflix at about 1 hour in. Apparently they exposed the monkeys to 3 - 4 hours of exhaust gasses from a diesel Ford F250. [editline]31st January 2018[/editline] The original plan was to have a person on an exercise bike while the exhaust gasses got pumped in.
honestly if you think thats sick, wait until you hear what else the germans have done...

Apparently the 97 Ford F-250 was better for the monkeys than the 2013 beetle:
In the tests, monkeys were forced to inhale exhaust fumes from the VW Beetle for over eight hours and then examined for harmful effects. A second control group of monkeys were made to inhale fumes from a 1997 diesel Ford pickup. But to their surprise the scientists found the monkeys who were exposed to the exhaust from the new Volkswagen suffered more inflammation of their internal organs than those exposed to the old Ford. ... EUGT paid $649,000 in advance for the study, according to Bild. But the newspaper alleged the lobby group refused to pay an outstanding $71,857 because it wasn’t happy with the results
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/01/31/suppressed-rigged-diesel-tests-monkeys-showed-new-cars-harmful/amp/ Diesel is just a terrible fuel for passenger vehicles.
