But in a statement released today, the Japanese publisher says “to maximize player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward”
Hum, how does that work, for both points? I don't think cutting off a whole company is good for both gamer satisfaction AND market potential. Were you seated next to Konami at school?
Update: Square apparently willing to sell Hitman rights along with IO. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-05-30-square-enix-willing-to-give-up-hitman-rights-to-ensure-series-future
Well that's nice of Square, Hopefully they find a good company to cloth over with Hitman
the Japanese publisher says “to maximize player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward”, they have “regrettably decided to withdraw from the business of IO INTERACTIVE”.
"We want to extinguish this fire which we had perfectly under control lately so we have decided to let a helicopter drop some propane tanks into it." Selling the rights might end up in a disaster like RollerCoaster Tycoon World or Dead Rising 4 - you know, inexperienced devs who feel confident about being true to the original while fucking everything up.
It's now time to breathe again.. Most importantly of course Hitman is still an IO ip.
Therefore I am proud to announce today that IOI is now officially an independent studio. We have successfully concluded our negotiations with Square Enix and have agreed to a management buyout. Crucially, we will keep all of the rights to the Hitman IP.

Thank you. Hakan, Io-Independent
Well played
We are counting on the continued support of all our players; simply by having fun with everything we’ve released so far for HITMAN – and we want to encourage more of you to try our game. We have more details to come on our plans for that next week.
stay tuned
