• AMD drivers put ads on your desktop

The GPU was a mistake we should go back to software rendering everything.
Well that sure killed any desire I had to consider AMD in future, this is the kind of thing I expect from shitty software companies not a major hardware producer, yeah nvidia might have ads in the installer but at least it fucks off when it's done.
what they did here is dumb I agree, but to denounce AMD entirely over just this is just a knee jerk reaction. What I bet will happen is that they get bad PR, remove this, "apologize," and then we all just continue on our way. Considering the many unfair practices NVIDIA and Intel have done in the past and continue to do so (with NVIDIA particularly remaining closed with everything, more details here), I am happy to see AMD still remaining open, notably pushing things like Vulkan instead of the proprietary DirectX. Thats no excuse for for this stupid ad thing, but honestly, its tiny compared to the other problems practiced in the market today
The desktop shortcut is dumb. I don't really care about their ads during driver updates though, I've just ignored them, they've been there for years for both GPU companies anyways.
If this was Nvidia doing this you guys would be shitting all over them.
Yes the hivemind that is facepunch.

I don't hold a very high opinion of AMD but I've been considering making the switch. Seeing this though, has completely changed my mind. I'm buying a new GPU next month, and I think I've just decided to get the 1080 now.
Getting this mad over a shortcut, holy shit some people are pathetic.
Getting this mad over a shortcut, holy shit some people are pathetic.
Get down from your high horse. Your boundaries on what software can or cannot do doesn't make you any better than anybody here.

Did AMD make a mistake doing this? Yes. Is it really all that big of a deal? No.
I'm not going to pay how ever much they want for anything for them to give me adverts, literally paying for unwanted ads no thank you.
Stop acting like something so minor is the worse thing in the world. Did AMD make a mistake doing this? Yes. Is it really all that big of a deal?
Get down from your high horse. You're free not to like it, but the hyperbole people are spewing over this is stupid.

Apparently if you have the Quake Beta already downloaded it'll replace the game's desktop icon with the referral link one. Source :what:
Oh no how dare a company try and make a bit of cash. It's for a free game
The company made their money when I bought their product. If they want to keep making more money, they'll continue making quality products that I'll want to buy again. this applies to most products but there's exceptions to it. It's how it should be for OS, hardware and software.
I honestly don't mind driver installers having game ads in them, it makes complete sense, and I don't have to look at them while the installer is doing its thing. As long as they stick to games and don't have autoplaying videos embedded in them or something, I don't want to start up a driver update, minimize the window and then suddenly start hearing: "GAIN LAUNDRY DETERGENT, IT'LL FRESHEN UP YOUR SHIT SO MUCH YOU CAN WEAR YOUR CLOTHES FOR EIGHT DAYS STRAIGHT WITHOUT FEELING LIKE A SWEATY HOG." However, anything that lasts after that window is closed, in my opinion, is unwarranted. I don't care how easy it is to remove, it shouldn't be there in the first place. Also, seriously? A Bit.ly link? How amateurish can you get, I wouldn't blame people for thinking they grabbed a cloned installer with an embedded virus or something. This reminds me of every installer in the early 2000's coming with like 30 checkboxes of adware and bloat you had to make sure to uncheck before you ran the installer. Let's not slowly go back to those days.
I hope the few of you never run a business. Edit: The ones completely excusing this.
I hope the few of you never get into business. Edit: The ones defending AMD in this.
except no one is. the closest I see is "who cares if they put a shortcut," which is a silly point to hold (we shouldnt be content with ads when we spend hundreds of dollars on hardware), but thats not supporting AMD on this, thats just being apathetic. Honestly guys, hold some perspective. this is just stupid, its not groundbreaking evil that should put you for or against AMD/NVIDIA
I'm not crucifying AMD, I just think the people who let it slide are the kind who'd make it happen in the first place:
Oh no how dare a company try and make a bit of cash.
- AMD Management
Yes the hivemind that is facepunch.
otherwise called "bunch of people have informed opinion after making rational decisions on a company's bad marketing blunder and being called hivemind because if it"
Imagine if every single program you had to install, or every update you had did this. You start off a with a fresh install of windows, go to update BIOS, your GPU, CPU, install chrome, update windows, install various drivers for your peripherals, install some HDD management software... Oh hey look at that, you're desktop is now completely cluttered in ad.fly links!
going off this, I always hate how if you buy computers from a store (like a laptop), depending on the company, you can get bunch of stupid software preinstalled, much if it doing nothing until you pay for it anyways, wasting system resources. thats why I always start by just nuking the windows install and installing fresh
Honestly, it's incredibly unprofessional for a company as large as AMD to use a bit.ly link as a desktop shortcut. Are they really that desperate for the $0.0001 they get from my click? Is the hundred(s) from buying a video card not enough? lol
Apparently a web shortcut placed on your desktop is now considered an ad. I was thinking like Windows notifications ads, not something that is fixed in a mere second.
I don't care if it's fixed in a second. It shouldn't even happen in the first place.
Imagine if every single program you had to install, or every update you had did this.
This kinda feeds my last point. Not to imply everyone with a Windows system is going through this but "why does Windows get slower overtime?" is a very common question in the Windows universe when it comes to long term Windows installations, it exists for reasons. The most common one I normally recognize is application bloat: applications making pointless registry entires that Windows has to go through, applications that are incredibly bloated with useless launch services and random ass dynamic link libraries, applications that normally fail to uninstall themselves 100%, just a whole mess of junk that many applications do because of their either sleazy, lazy or bad developer. Although every single one of us knows how small this situation is, it plays a good part in software rot. A small shortcut does nothing physically, but as long as people keep claiming complaints about the abuse of system abilities are hyperbolic, we'll still see people reinstalling Windows every 8 months because their install 'magically slowed down', you're essentially letting companies continue writing applications like shit, and also continue pulling stuff like this. Although completely different environments, you really don't see this on other operating systems as frequently as you do on Windows.
the ones who are saying it's worthless to put bit.ly links are out of your mind quake's developers / publishers probably paid them an ass load to do it for them not excusing it but i don't really give a shit in all honesty [editline]28th April 2017[/editline] and i just updated, no shortcuts were added
And to top all that off, there have been only 5 posts on reddit, and 5 news places saying it happened, all sourcing off of a comment on techpowerup. i'm not saying this didn't happen but when there is only 6 people saying it happened within 6 hours of it going live, i doubt it's legitimacy especially when no one on social media is complaining about this

You're free not to like it, but the hyperbole people are spewing over this is stupid.
You might not care about your software's integrity, but a lot of people do. It's about not betraying your trust, even if it's a small transgression like this one. I get it, you're the sort of guy who doesn't care, and it's okay. Just don't go uphold your standards to other people and talking them down when they disagree with your judgment.
