Crypto Mining Hinders Space Science as GPU Prices Skyrocket and Supply Dwindles

I'm laughing so hard at all the comments in this thread, so many people have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. We are all at the front of a revolution not only in payment, but also in logistics, energy and many other markets we don't even know blockchain technology will have an impact on yet.
I suggest you start here if you want to know what blockchain is really about: https://github.com/ethereumbook/ethereumbook
I would call 'miners' as entropy generators, as that's what they're doing.
Consuming energy and resources for speeding up heat death of the universe.
They're not going to be viable currencies as transaction costs are astounding, and the currencies in general have no ability to balance and steer economic system they're supposed to operate. +Limited lifetime for currencies.
Crypto will lead to the heat death of the universe, you heard it here first folks. Talk about being melodramatic. Read up on crypto projects that go beyond being a currency, or stick to idiocy, whichever you prefer.

I missed out on the potentially massive profits due to my own stubbornness and if I got in now I'd be admitting I was wrong about it being useless monopoly money all these years, so I'd much rather just be passive aggressive about it and complain about crypto destroying the world, thank you very much.

Bro I don't think he was being serious

Hard to tell with a lot of people in this thread so even if he wasn't, it still applies to a lot of people here who simply refuse to read up on anything.

I mean he's technically right, it's just with the scale he's talking about, it's obviously a joking remark.
I'm not sure whether I prefer them over the cultists that elevate blockchain to god-like status or not. Crypto threads are kinda like gun threads.

You mean sort of like how you seem to be refusing to read the thread, where it's been stated by multiple people that everyone is talking specifically about the currencies since they are the direct reason people are cleaning out GPU stock everywhere?
No-one here has any issues with the other uses of blockchains.
Basically people here are getting mad about an ongoing revolution in currency because it's making an impact on another ongoing space revolution.

I've read the thread plenty. I said a lot of people, not all people. Learn the distinction. The majority of people bashing crypto just bash it as a whole and do not understand what it actually is beyond Bitcoin.

I'd be hard-pressed to call it a revolution in currency. It's a great technological revolution that has the potential to make a good impact, but it comes with the (current) caveat that it requires an immense amount of calculating power to work, and that has proven to cause some issues with the supply and price of GPUs, the energy costs notwithstanding.

Like others pointed out, once Ethereum moves away from proof of work to proof of stake things will hopefully change for the better, with other currencies following suit. Regardless of what you think of crypto, the energy consumption is ridiculous and needs to go away, that's for sure.
