man, the lego movie really did set the bar high didn't it?
I'm a little confused about the parallel to Lego movie. I thought this was a wreck it Ralph rip off?

It's less specific and more about taking an incredibly outlandish idea from something everyone is familiar with and finding a way to make a (watchable) movie from it. Phil Lord and Chirs Miller pulled it off with Legos because they're fucking brilliant/nuts and Sony must've thought they could do the same with Emojis given this project started up just shortly after The Lego movie's mega box office run + critical success. Really this shit wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the success of the Lego movie.
I thought The Emoji Movie was announced before Lego movie was released.
I still remember someone on IMDB posted a picture of a guy thinking about suicide.

Nope. To recap: Lego movie basically wrapped it's super successful box office run April 2014, topped DVD charts on May 2014, led to a shortage of Lego products by September 2014, and won tons of awards January - March 2015. Shortly after the awards wrap-up on July 2015 Sony spent a ton of money purchasing the rights to an Emoji movie in a big bidding war against other studios. Yea it's pretty easy to guess what made them think buying those rights was such a good idea.
and it looks like they were right. weekend estimates are in and while Emoji movie only spent all of 24 hours as the #1 movie before quickly dropping off and finishing the weekend in second place to last weekend's Dunkirk, it's still got so little competition that Boxofficemojo is predicting it could make $60-70 million just from here in the States on top of all the extra cash it's gonna make internationally. Yea this films no bomb.
Well, if it isn't going to bomb, can we at-least get the creators convicted of crimes against humanity? I'm fairly sure this film counts as one!!!

Can't we just have families watch Despicable Me 3? I'm sure that film will be more fulfilling than fucking Emoji Movie. They couldn't have pulled that film out of theaters yet.

here's hoping the foreign market doesn't buy into it. over here in brazil, i haven't heard emojis called by that name, and name recognition is the whole point of this scam- i mean product- i mean movie

I really want to know what was going through the Sony's film executives mind when they green lit the emoji movie. Was this movie set up to fail just to avoid some sort of payout?

Money. I think after a stream of some box numbers quite not turning out as imagined from past films, Sony Pictures cobbled together a film that gives no shits on originality, story, characters, designs, etc. The end result is a product with products within a product to make back some value lost from their previous works and to sell easy to make toys to impressionable kids suckered into this flick.

When I did some theater work, we would go through and play the movie anyway. If no one showed up for 15 minutes, we called it off and went home.

Not sure if anyone will get this but I think Sony Pictures is turning into the Cannon Films of the 21st century. The thing is though at least I can take a Cannon films picture randomly and see what sort of hilarious clusterfuck I end up with, I doubt Sony Pictures will ever have that same appeal.

the thinking heads behind all the movie translations in french think they're smart or something by making movie titles completely fucking different from their original names
sometimes, that even includes changing the english title to ANOTHER english title, just confusing everyone in the process (i.e "the hangover" series is just called "very bad trip" around here because apparently "hangover" / "gueule de bois" is too difficult to understand)

Eh I think this is a victory ontop of the 1.5/10 imDB, 6% RT, and 12 metacritic.
This alone shows us that they made $12,898,296 short of even from production alone, not to mention advertising.
Amazing Spider-man and its sequel both broke well over even on budget, and was called a disappointment by the company. Enough that they played ball with Marvel.
I think they should be able to see that the franchise potential for the film is non-existent

way too soon to draw any solid conclusions yet till we see second and third weekend droprates and overseas box office numbers. give it a few weeks and then we'll have a better idea. if this shit takes off in china and other places I wouldn't be surprised to see them greenlight another cheaply made sequel, but we'll c
