I know the meme is "how does he keep getting away with it", but seriously, how does CNN keep getting away with this? You'd think someone somewhere in the organization would have had a moment of inspiration and have put an internal flag on the name Sam Hyde by now.
This isn't even just shitty Journalism. This is straight up managerial incompetence.
does CNN need to vet every single talking point with a guest prior to their appearance? because that seems to be the only plausible way to protect from that. and then, what if the guest goes off script? what is CNN's responsibility there? Especially considering ([del]as we've seen in this thread[/del] edit: pardon me, that was a different organization!) they've likely already corrected the error
CNN and competence don't really go together sadly, they've gone to shit recently
Only recently? :v:
Update from the press conference
Some managed to escape during the shooting
A townsperson shot the dude as he was fleeing the church with a shotgun. They arent saying if he eventually bled out from this or if he self inflicted.
That clip is cut wildly out of context () but it seems to me like an impromptu (ie not planned) interview with a representative where there was no way of knowing he was going to namedrop Sam Hyde of all people. Really hard to blame CNN for that one but I guess they are an easy target.
This is the second time now theyve fell for it. Amazing.
This isn't CNN's fault, this is the Representative they had on air falling for it.
they could have people prepared to fact check the statements of callers they have on the air
that's one thing when the facts to be checked against are relatively settled (ie, during a political debate) but when a factual landscape is still developing? that's tough - and in fact, the very sources they'd probably be checking with are people like the one they were interviewing.
i do personally think it's time for the pace of news to slow down so as to encourage better accuracy in reporting, however that's an entirely separate conversation and one that's not likely to progress too far - the media landscape is the way it is for a reason, and that is that people voraciously crave information. barring some really crazy situation and actual straight up legislation I don't see the 24-hour cycle (and by extension race to be first) going anywhere. I mean let's be real - I've been rechecking this thread every 20~ minutes looking for updates on the situation.
Was told CNN's "firearms analyst" said this "The Shooter was using a Ruger Bushmaster mini 14 rifle also known as the Bushmaster"
The very least CNN can do is make a quick vocal statement that not all information is confirmed, and to take all names and statistics as indefinite at best until more witnesses and law enforcement can provide more accurate data.
Disregard my previous post. Given that the situation no longer appears to be developing, the mod team decided "okay" opening the thread up to debate.

https://youtu.be/qfSxJdpv5NY you can go to this full stream of CNN and watch for yourself. He name drops Sam more than once. At around 5:15 ET on CNNs corner clock they ask him who his sources are and he says FBI and local LEO and thats the name they gave him(total bullshit. Hes prolly browsing reddit and/or twitter because he has nothing to do with this active investigation). CNN never stops him and continues to allow him to spew the obvious bullshit. They should know better considering theyve fallen victim to this before. Last time they even posted Sam's pics to go along with his name.

One of those shut up wesley moments.
This isn't how you argue a point over a mass shooting.

I don't understand his logic at all:
An atheist just shot up a church so I'm going to mock religious people because Paul Ryan won't do anything about gun control
CNN just needs to have PostIt notes all over that say "It's not Sam Hyde"
CNN just needs to have PostIt notes all over that say "It's not Sam Hyde"
it's a reverse boy who cried wolf situation engineered by Sam Hyde's shadow cabal
one day he's gonna detonate a suitcase nuke in times square and nobody's gonna believe anyone who says it's him

I’m behind. Where’s the source on him being an atheist?

Wil Wheaton is such a tool and media/himself have basically titled him the ambassador of nerdom.

He's liked several atheist pages on facebook, other than that nothing.

I want to rate you dumb.
It's not your fault.
I just can't conceive of how any human being manages to be so dense, self-aggrandizing and arrogant all at once.
I wish it required some special functionality, like Psychopathy or Autism, ungripped by the normal range of folk.

I don't inherently disagree with his message, but the execution is over the top.
Inaction by legislators is a problem when it comes to this stuff, no matter what your perspective with respect to gun rights actually is. Whether it be better mental health funding (in this case, care for vets, even if dishonorably discharged) or restrictions on guns, at least some sort of discussion of remedy is warranted. "prayers going out" is becoming a common platitude along with the lines of "how are you doing today?" - reflexive and obligated.
I don't agree with basically anything Wil Wheaton says but that specific tweet seemed to be more aimed about congressional inaction than an attack on anyones faith. If that's the worst tweet we get out of this, we should consider ourselves lucky.

still, making a tweet like that is in pretty bad taste considering the people murdered were church-goers practicing their faith

The second time he said it was about 80 seconds after the first time he said that, there is no reasonable way to fact check those statements in real time, especially as the situation on the ground related to the shooting is still unfolding.
Even still, if you want to argue that they should that's one thing, but I still wouldn't say CNN "fell" for anything. Seems like the congressman is the one who fell for it.
