Are we just resistant to change? Are we not looking at them coherently? Are we not seeing the true motives? Are we too simple to understand? Or the design simply take time to sink in?
Or it is them who are at fault, change for the sake of change? Making the incorrect decisions? Seeing things from the wrong perspective?

idk i personally love circle avatars. I acknowledge that they make avatars smaller and don't show the full picture, they look aesthetically pleasing with posts and to me capture self shot photos better

My favourite are slightly rounded corners like the ones Twitter used to have, but that doesn't look that great with YouTube's design.

I forgot to turn off my avatar squarer and sentiment bar width fix for the preview, probably should fix that...

I never get the circle avatar hate either, with modern web design moving towards less perceptible boundaries between things like YouTube's comments (eg no borders around comments), you need some decoration on avatars to make them flow better. It also makes it a lot easier for the eye to identify it as an avatar since it's shape is unique.

The problem with circular avatars is needing to constantly change them just so you can get it to crop right.
I have a hard time even using Youtube without something like Magic Actions to add common sense features.
Do wish they would stop with the "bright solid colors on pure searing white with 50% unused space" designs. It just reminds me of bad geocities sites.

Circle avatars look great for portraits, like if you get a "Meet the Team" section on a website and it has each individual's picture with their name below. They're good for language flags as well. Apart from these things, they just end up cutting off content or forcing you to make your avatar circle-friendly.
Probably the better thing to do, is just to have rounded corners, and then maybe make transparency an option so you can make your avatar round if you want to

Depending on the site design, transparent avatars are really messy though.
It works here on Facepunch, but on e.g. Twitter I'm glad they have a backdrop.
I actually like that your profile picture in the top leads to "My channel" now. I thought it was beyond stupid before when clicking your profile picture before sent you to Google+ or some shit and had no link to your Youtube channel. Who thought that was a good idea for so long?

with a large company like this there's so much research and time put into new designs that they are almost always objectively better and you'll start disliking the old one after using this one for a few days
