The problem is that that that's pretty much the only thing that looks good with them.
I can perhaps get youtube wanting using them for the comments, but on the uploader's picture and on channels, it should p. much be square.
Otherwise this redesign is pretty great, I've been using the dark mode beta for quite a long time. The only problem I have is the new logo at the top right, it's just too glaring.

Seems like they should focus more on the fact that people are pretty much losing their jobs over the issue, instead of ignoring it and sweeping it under the rug with a marginal design change.
They instituted this to take attention away from the demonitizaion practices since everyone complains for weeks over logo and UI changes on youtube.

Half the designers probably aren't even aware of the demonetization problem in the first place, and even if they were, it's not their business, not within their talents, and not their jurisdiction.

I'm curious, why is pure red considered a high school project level of quality? I mean I'd find it straining if the entire page background was solid red but are you seriously getting sore eyes from a small red logo?

Right click on the video and go to stats for nerds. I can almost guarantee it's 16:9. The uploader edited 21:9 and put it in a 16:9. It therefore can't scale any further. Not YT's fault here, but would be nice if they just fit it the player to 16:9.
Edit: Wow, I checked it. Holy shit it's actually 2.4:1 and the player actually doesn't scale it out. That's actually broken.

I hate how when you click on a playlist it starts playing.
Like I'm fine that clicking on the thumbnail plays the whole list, that's how it's always been, but it used to be that clicking on the title just showed you the list.

i had this issue today. i wanted to open an actual playlist and see upload dates and stuff, but it just doesn't let you anymore. goes straight to playing it which is seriously stupid

I wonder if the branding is new, but the player hasn't been updated yet. I think I'm on the old UI.
it would look 10 times better if chrome had a function where the top changes color according to what the website says, like chrome does on android. that way you wouldnt have such a contrast with the white and black, if chrome was black too

Last I checked you can click the title of the playlist while watching a video in it to get to that page.

I don't like it. The stats on video pages in particular looks like the work of an unpaid intern.
I kind of like the minimalism. We always complain when the design changes, but we always get used to it.

It's very likely that the reason they changed the logo color is because it didn't stand out well against the dark mode, and a pure red is sure to contrast equally against both light and dark
They basically just removed the only quirk about their logo and made it an Impact font-lookalike
