The issue with the new addon api is that they're standardizing to Chrome's shitty Web Extensions which are missing a lot of the stuff necessary for many popular Firefox addons to even function in the name of security. Which is totally retarded since I don't recall security ever really being a notable issue with addons from Mozzila's site.
Oh I fully understand the move to WebExtensions. I was just wondering what specific APIs have gone walkabouts since the move. A more unified extension architecture between browsers isn't a bad thing after all, so long as browsers can expose what features they actually support I can't see why the spec couldn't allow for extensions to itself that addons can opt-in to using either. [editline]14th November 2017[/editline]
There appears to be inadequate APIs for styling the UI, I don't know how many add-ons this effects, I know there is no API for creating a new toolbar either (I liked the add-on bar...) I believe this effect Status-4-ever, TabMixPlus, ClassicThemeRestorer and probable others. One of the extensions I use (open in browser) has managed to work around this issue by completely replacing the window (the download pop-up) it would otherwise style, however this is going to cause issues with other add-ons that want to do the same thing, flashgot (no WE port yet) also adds it's own option to the download window, which won't work with if open in browser replaces it. Status-4-ever needs APIs to get the status text, the author has stated that the major APIs it's needs are absent in WebExtensions NoScript's WE port does not have all the features of the old version, I believe this has been stated to be due to missing API features. There are probable other missing APIs, I only looked into those relevant to the extensions I use.
Mozilla have been slowly trying to remove their UI APIs for a while it seems. The last big UI overhaul killed a fair few addons but you could still replace it with something like the old UI at the very least. Kinda weird to remove the ability to create toolbars, we're way past the age of the toolbar apocalypse that was the early noughties Internet.
Mozilla have been slowly trying to remove their UI APIs for a while it seems...
UI customization was the reason I stayed on FF instead of moving to chrome.
Ha.
They know what's up
I haven't seen this many people with a Firefox icon next to their post in a long time. So far it's a pretty nice upgrade and I can definitely see the performance boost. Youtube and Twitch players would always slow my browser for a couple seconds while it loaded, now it's pretty much instant, no hitches in scrolling either
Why was the person in the video saving a bunch of screenshots of buzzfeed articles?
What's the joke here?
Adblocker in an advert
I don't like the new logo but the new version looks and runs great. It seems like it uses less memory too, which is a huge thing.

As a Chrome convert, so far my only complaint is that the context (right-click) menu blocks scrolling with the scroll wheel, versus being closed by it. Though the real test will be once I end up with 80 tabs open; hopefully it eats less RAM than Chrome. Regardless, it's great that there's now so many good options in the desktop browser market.
Oh I fully understand the move to WebExtensions. I was just wondering what specific APIs have gone walkabouts since the move.
One I'm waiting for in particular is the API for choosing which tabs to show in the UI - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1384515
Really happy to see so many Firefox useragents once again
A lot of people are willing to try it. Real question is will it last?
I decided to give it a try today, and so far I'm very happy with it. I think I'll switch over from Chrome for the time being.
I'm already missing some extensions. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-fox-only-better/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/roomy-bookmarks-toolbar/ Anybody know of replacements for these?
Why do twitter posts not load? Is it related to uBlock Origin on Firefox? I just switched from Chrome. Edit: Fixed with disabling tracking protection
Damn they already pushed it, holy shit this is really good finally the UI is close to Chrome now. Well done mozilla.
After many long years with Chrome as my main browser, I decided to finally make the switch, except... Is this normal? This is with about a dozen tabs open.
After many long years with Chrome as my main browser, I decided to finally make the switch, except... Is this normal? This is with about a dozen tabs open.
It is. Firefox uses background processes now (partially to isolate crashes and partially to make the browser more responsive). I don't entirely see why they can't use threads for this (unless they don't trust themselves to avoid hard memory corruption errors). The difference between Firefox and Chrome is that Firefox creates only a limited amount of processes and then starts consolidating into the existing ones. How many depends on your hardware though. It's still a RAM hog, but it's not an atrocious one like Chrome or just about any Electron app.
I'm using both Quantum and ESR, one for regular use and one for school. For OS X you can use MultiFirefox to have multiple profiles and instances going at once. Not to worry, I've changed ESR's icon to one from a more... noble fork.
I'm sticking with Waterfox until Noscript is available. I wish CTR works on 57. Now I need to poke and prod to see if I can reduce the UI footprint.
I've been using an older version of Firefox with Classic Theme Restorer and Tax Mix Plus. Never liked how Firefox tried to copy Chrome's interface. I was also worried they'd try to change to a new font like Chrome did, I dislike Chrome's font. Hopefully those extensions are brought over, I'd like to try the new browser, but I've heard newer versions of firefox don't support them.
Been using quantum for a few months or so now. It's a night and day improvement over the old engine. Id say that it's potentially faster and more stable than current versions of Chrome. I just wish I knew why it won't keep me logged in to WhatsApp Web on my home machine. My work machine is fine.
Can I import all my crap from Firefox?
Can I import all my crap from Firefox?
Can I import all my crap from Firefox?
...it's still Firefox?
I knew as soon as they give version 57 a name, people would start confusing it as a separate browser...
I knew as soon as they give version 57 a name, people would start confusing it as a separate browser...
Most firefox forks/branches still use the default firefox profiles. Waterfox only moved off them in like 55/56. Firefox dev (or nightly) has an option to seperate them, since you cannot use the profile more than one at a time. (Using -no-remote -P gives access to control a new profile). It's generally advised when you're profiles are unsynced, and you like them synced, to just use the online sync functionality
Either my old addons were lagging the shit out of my browser or this update is magic. Probably both. Tab switching is instant and even fullscreening Youtube is faster. Hasn't slowed down once today, 10/10 update
Now let's hope they make the app less awful to use.
...it's still Firefox?
You'll lose shit loads of things in the update however. In addition to losing plenty of addons there's issue such as addons losing their saved things. Stylus lost all of my stylesheets, for example, and I'm not sure where to even find them to try and recover them. Update Scanner also lost all of my scanned pages which is a pain in the ass because I use it to watch pages I wouldn't think to check often to begin with so I have no idea what most of the ones I lost even were. If anyone knows how to recover those things I'd appreciate the help. Firefox apparently already downloaded the update before I told it to not update and applied it regardless of my settings so I'm stuck with it now. Also someone posted something earlier about how to disable Pocket. If someone could repost that I'd appreciate it. I have no use for Pocket so it's just wasting space.
