Jesus fuck it looks like a miniature sun
It pretty much is. If it's a thermonuclear warhead it literally is.
The first flash is from the air around the bomb becoming heated to such a degree (by X-ray and Gamma Rays) it becomes incandescent, the second flash is from the shockwave compressing the air around bomb superheating the air and turning it into a plasma.
Huh, I thought the first flash was already the shockwave heating up the air.
Huh, I thought the first flash was already the shockwave heating up the air.
Xrays travel at the speed of light, shockwaves travel at the speed of sound of the material.
Exactly. It's never going to go away. Never in my life will I be able to go "Man, remember when everyone had doomsday weapons at the ready all the time? Glad we don't have to worry about that anymore." Our president carries the keys to extinction with him at all times. The reality is hard to imagine, that we possess thousands of these weapons that could just literally erase you in the blink of an eye. It's spooky, to be honest
Personally, I view it as a test of our maturity as a civilization, whether or not we can handle the responsibility. We've done well so far, but the unfortunate fact is, we have probably a very long time ahead of us to fuck it up, generations at least. I only hope we can establish a self-sustaining presence on Mars and beyond before we self-destruct.
I can feel the radiation coming through my screen
I can't imagine what it must of been like being on the teams that created these. I would feel uneasy the whole time while being in awe of what I made.
yeah, and they were

Past nuclear weapons had to be big to ensure that the target was destroyed even with the inaccurate targeting systems we had in those days. Most warheads nowadays are in the several hundred Kt range or less since we now have far more accurate targeting systems.
This is amazing.
The 57 Mt bomb was the Tsar Bomba, which was hardly a practical weapon. and then they designed one for 100. God i want to see a fucking Tsar explosion filmed in modern quality. [editline]17th March 2017[/editline] To give you all an example of the Tsar, i'm using Nukemap. I highly suggest watching these vids and then using nukemap. https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ Here is what the Tsar Bomba and the designed 100MT bomb would do to London. Same, even a small one. They are just so beautiful and awe inspiring in a bizarre way, ignoring what they were designed for.
I just want to watch a nuclear test in person.
You may turn blind for doing so.
You may turn blind for doing so.
Worth it
I just want to watch a nuclear test in person.
A real out-of-body experience.
Talking about the tsar bomba :
Sensors continued to identify the shockwaves after their third trip around the world.
:O [editline]17th March 2017[/editline]
You may turn blind for doing so.
Actually in the 50s they used to drive up soldiers to 2-3 km from the bomb and told them to not watch the initial blast, but it was safe to do so after 5 seconds. Some soldiers say it was the loudest sound they have ever heard.

Would love to hear OPpenheimer from /k/ talking about this new footage.

I've always wondered, what are those vertical smoke streamers you see in the left of the thumbnail here? You see them all the time in old nuke testing footage. They're in this, in prettymuch all the nuclear cannon shot films, and more. What are they? Are they some sort of high speed debris cast-off, or convection effect or something?

They help to track the movement of the shockwave from the explosion, which would otherwise be nearly invisible. The shockwave shows up as a "ripple" against the background due to the large difference in refractive indices between the air in front of and behind the shockwave.
2,400FPS recording in the 40's-60's? Jesus christ. That must have cost far more than the uranium the nukes were built with back then.
Xrays travel at the speed of light, shockwaves travel at the speed of sound of the material.
Yes, but the X-rays would have long left the fireball, considering the light has had time to reach the camera. Shockwaves can also travel faster than the speed of sound in the material. Anyway, I found an article on it: http://wordpress.mrreid.org/2015/04/18/the-nuclear-double-flash/. tl;dr, the initial flash is from the air around the bomb being heated to incandescence, the dimming is due to the expanding shockwave heating and ionising the air outside it to opacity, and the second flash is due to the shockwave breaking away and the ionised air cooling and becoming transparent again.

If we didn't have a Hiroshima event where nuclear armaments in their infancy were used in anger, people might not hesitate so much.
Now this one really looks like a miniature sun:
Seeing test of something so destructive carrying your name has a weird spine-chilling effect.
They made soldiers walk towards a nuke
That is a really good quality film transfer.
That is a really good quality film transfer.
Apparently Atom Central have been going back to the original reels and digitising them. They offer high-quality nuclear test footage on a commercial basis to documentaries and such.
Absolutely fascinating stuff. Specially relevant: [hd]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15YgdrhrCM8[/hd] Such a hilarious movie.
