Valve makes money hand over fist with Steam by doing practically nothing other than host servers and provide (minimal) support. Pretty sure they do have that kind of cash, actually. I doubt they went into the negative for those projects, but rather started those projects because they had the disposable cash to do so.
Certainly, I think Valve has some of the highest profit margins of any large electronics/entertainment company, even Apple. The reason Valve doesn't do anything is because they're scared to fail, despite what they say publicly. By fail I don't just mean any specific big thing, but because they're still such a small studio (around ~300 employees) they straight up don't have enough hands to manage doing Steam, VR, CS:GO, Dota 2, TF2, and then a AAA game. So because of that, they're very careful on what they spend their time on - that results in them not doing anything risky, like a "AAA" game.
The only shareholder in Valve is Gabe Newell(or at least has a majority), it is also a privately traded company I believe.
With all the money Valve must be saving, I wonder how much a stock in Valve would cost theoretically? That would be the absolute safest investment stock on the market if it existed. I guess there's always Disney, [sp]if anyone could afford it.[/sp]
Just how many games has Valve started development on in the last decade and then quietly canceled? Half Life 2: Episode 3, Stars of Blood, Left4Dead3, and now this. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if Ricochet 2 actually was a real thing for about six months.
That's how valve works, even hl2 had a lot of iterations, tf2 had 3 or 4 [editline]28th September 2017[/editline]
Probably several tens of games. Valve is just not interested in taking the risk of making a game that could potentially not live up to people's expectations I guess..
the reason valve cancels so many games is because they don't like them
To be fair in most game development studios a ton of concepts do get thrown out by the wayside. L4D3 never making it past pre-production (at least as far as I know) is more shocking as they woulden't need to try too hard to make that great. Just make some really good maps, change up the character roster and add new items. Boom, new game, watch that honey pour in. I cant stand dota-like games and I am not a fan of fantasy in general but I would legit play and enjoy this.
the reason valve cancels so many games is because they don't like them
Yeah I'm sure Artifact is just because they like card games and not because HS is fucking money. Same goes for Dota 2 when LoL took off, people have idolized this company but they're still out to make a profit.

It's just in a strange limbo because no one knows what to do with it because no one wants to just push out another L4D, they want it to be ~something special~ because that's seemingly the only thing the higher ups at valve ( yes they exist ) seem to care about in whether or not a game gets any real support or office-space or whatever else.
l4d2 wasn't "something special" it was l4d1 but with more stuff so idk why they suddenly have standards
Because they hated L4D2.
So a moba and a card game are "something special" Jesus Valve
So a moba and a card game are "something special" Jesus Valve
At one point i did hear stuff about the DOTA team being a bit of a shit in regards to cooperating with the rest of the company.
Keep in mind that Valve's flat structure makes them operate very differently from most studios. A project at Valve starts with a few employees getting together and making concept content, and if it's popular other developers voluntarily join in. If it's not, it goes nowhere. I imagine there are a lot more projects like this at Valve that were pitched, brainstormed, captured in concept, and then abandoned.
The thing that sucks is that I feel like that's all Valve employees seem to do. Just abandon everything.
So a moba and a card game are "something special" Jesus Valve
You have a point about Artifact, but Dota 2 was made around the time were LoL and HoN were the only popular mobas (and were nowhere near as prevalent as they were today) as well as Dota 2 being a remake of the game that pretty much pioneered the genre as a whole and getting it out of its outdated WC3 engine with modern day improvements.

From what I remember no one knows anything about L4D3. The only reason we know it exists are a few leaked files.
l4d2 wasn't "something special" it was l4d1 but with more stuff so idk why they suddenly have standards
L4D2 was a experiment to see how quickly they could get a game out.
So a moba and a card game are "something special" Jesus Valve
I get that hating Dota is what the cool kids are doing but it is absolutely special. Valve taking on a completely new genre and bringing this incredibly old mod and bringing everything with it into modern technology is pretty damn cool. Its always fun to see old vs new comparisons between the heroes and see how Valve handled their design.
