I thought the first Transformers was a pretty good film actually. The opening reveal of the first transformer was actually a cool moment, and the whole movie really focused on how contemporary humans would deal with an attack from something advanced like that. The line "Is it the Koreans?" in a transformers movie is IMO a really neat idea. May have been pretty flat story wise but the attention to detail was great in that one. Sure it was cool when the transformers fought but in my mind the good moments were the ones where they explored the idea of humans facing the transformers. If there's a reboot coming just give us some of that please.
The scenes of transformers ambushing humans were the best. The one in the desert, especially that shot of the soldiers running away and the transformer jumping out of the sand behind them. Oh man. Just more of that.

There's a bit too much... Bay-ness in the acting and jokes but a lot of the scenes and direction really work. Plus - as someone who never watched/read Transformers stuff growing up I feel that Sam as audience surrogate works well for introducing the concept of the Transformers. Holding onto him for the sequels... less so.

It achieved the realism it set out for. The sequels abandoned it and left the series in a goopy mess of leftovers and callbacks.
This should be categorized as a buzzword from now on, just like "dinamic synergy" is in the professional world.
It's synergy, Cameron! It's better than all of your transformers!
It's weird how they kept redesigning the characters. Like, it makes sense for Iron Man to keep changing across movies because Tony builds different suits. But why should Optimus Prime look totally different? Surely just changing the model of truck he turns into shouldn't have that much of an impact?
Simple answer: to sell toys. You won't buy a new Prime if you already have the one from the last movie and it's the same.

I didn't get why they put balls and bad stereotypes in the second one though. The third one was boring, it doesn't have the excuse of the writers strike, they should have made a concious effort to fix it. But then the forth one came out for some reason. Why they didn't do something more with the man made transformers I don't know, I'd love to have seen the man made transformers vs the autobots and decepticons, but fuck that, let's confuse the audience and bring back megaton again because boring.....

I mean think about it... they can transform into any electronic or vehicle; there's so many different ideas to explore there.
Non-terrible live action gritty Gundam movie by Spielberg plz

Shapeshifting gubbins that could disguise themselves as regular set props until they fuck your shit up? Kinda like those chests in Dark Souls? :v: Fuck everything about those.
If they gonna reboot this I, too, hope they try to recreate the old school designs. Most importantly though I hope they give both factions actual character rather than racial stereotypes. And maybe let Bumblebee talk already?
On one hand live action designs of the Transformers in the style of IDW's "For All Mankind" arc could work as AaronM202 pointed out. On the other hand... It makes the characters with actual mouths have permanent scowls. All those bits on their faces would be hard to read on screen.

On one hand they are mechanical, on the other the detail would make them look too elderly or always scowling. Maybe go for a Colossus type look. [editline]19th February 2018[/editline] Or perhaps mechanical structure with a semi-transparent film overtop thats smooth and seemless, like the movie version of I, Robot but less weird.
I thought Optimus Prime looked pretty great in the first one, along with many of the others. After a movie or two they got ridiculous.
Transformers: The Last Knight isn't even the lowest the franchise could have sunk. The whole cinematic universe was at one point going to consists of a whole bunch of spinoffs in different time periods (Rome, Middle Ages, WWII), some of which were worked into the plot of The Last Knight. And of this was because they had written themselves into a corner due to killing off so many characters. I mean, just look at everyone they've killed off in 5 films: Jazz Ironhide Ratchet Arcee Leadfoot Que/Wheeljack Starscream Soundwave Laserbeak Ravage Scorponok Blackout Brawl Bonecrusher Demolishor Sideways Devastator Jetfire The Fallen Crankcase Crowbar Hatchet Sentinel Prime Lockdown Onslaught Nitro Zeus Dreadbot Mohawk And half of these were glorified CGI extras who died 5 minutes after they appeared. Can you imagine if the Marvel Cinematic universe pulled a Revenge of the Fallen and introduced over half a dozen popular characters in one film, and then killed them all off by the end? Of course not - because Kevin Feige knows what he's doing, unlike the people in charge of the Transformers franchise.

The first 5 on that list could last 5-7 films by popularity and characterization alone; but noooo we gotta kill them because the toys didn't sell well. ROTF introduced the Constructicons only for them to be voiceless extras and killed in the very same battle. If Hasbro can resell the same living and dead characters from Star Wars in their Black Series line for the new trilogy, they can do it for the Transformers Michael Bay line too.
Kind of sucks though cause Transformers could easily sustain a cinematic shared universe.
A reminder that Marvel's Avengers did a cross-over with Transformers at least once. Assuming the writers and casting directors weren't morons, that could be neat... [editline]19th February 2018[/editline]
Kind of sad they cancelled 6. I was really excited to see how they were gonna fuck Unicron up and probably give him a giant dick. Also real talk, don't watch 5. I paid money to see it and I'm still pissed off.
Probably for the better. I don't know if it's nostalgia goggles or what, but I just can't see anyone other than Orson Welles as Unicron, even if the results of his voice-over sessions weren't so great.

[editline]19th February 2018[/editline]
New Avengers vs. Transformers was...an experiment of sorts. It was the first and last time IDW and Marvel ever teamed up for a comic that in all accounts is non-canon in any inverse despite clearly happening in the Escalation arc.
Yeah Bumblebee should have got his voice back after the first movie, god knows why they wanted to give him a disabled quality and persist with it.
He literally did get his voice back at the end of the first movie.
He literally did get his voice back at the end of the first movie.
Yeah and it should have stayed that way.
Yeah and it should have stayed that way.
But it was his [del]gimmick[/del] thing, how else would he be recognisable
Thing is, after they REALLY touched up Welle's recordings, the end result was much, much different from this. This guy is good, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't really "fit" what you'd expect from something not only evil, but also massive, and ancient. Where-as Welles, his over-all attitude combined with literally being massive and ancient lends those qualities to the role itself rather well, I guess. 2:17 The growl in Welles' voice also doesn't seem quite as forced as the example you've shown here, as IIRC a low, rumbling growl came pretty naturally to Welles. That growl is pretty important for the setup of Unicron in the 1986 film, because on top of being massive, ancient, and evil, the low growl in his voice suggests a more savage, animal-like mind.
Transformers Producer Ian Bryce leaves Parmount Pictures for Netflix. Source: http://deadline.com/2018/02/ian-bryce-netflix-deal-producer-war-machine-world-war-z-transformers-1202290240/
In a move that signals the growing feature film ambitions of Netflix, the streaming service has made a multi-year first look deal with Ian Bryce, the producer of big scale films that include Saving Private Ryan, Almost Famous, War Machine, and the Transformers franchise. Bryce and his Ian Bryce Productions will move from Paramount Pictures. The producer first worked with Netflix on the David Michod-directed Brad Pitt-starrer War Machine, and the plan is to build on that relationship and have Bryce be a core supplier. On the film side, this follows a recent deal with War for the Planet of the Apes and the next Batman director Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho banner. It also follows the groundbreaking TV deal Netflix made with Ryan Murphy.
We didn't start the fire. It's was always burning since the world's been turning...
