Take-Two sent a C&D letter to the OpenIV team, therefore killing GTA 5 modding

I'm sure an openIV clone will come through the pipes soon from someone else. It would be silly if someone else didn't

It will, and I hope the source code will be available this time.

They've spent 10 years decrypting the files and finding special keys to unlock stuff. I think their documentation might've been taken down too. If they don't leak the sourcefiles themselves, I don't really know if there will ever be a replacement.
This affects FiveM as well, afaik serverowners have to use OpenIV to manage their server's addons and create new mods. Without it, they might be stuck as-is and unable to update.

What? as far as I know GTA V's encryption is nothing special.
Too bad that this didn't stop menu users from recently dropping money in GTAO from a few reports I seen.

It took them a long time, a few months at least, to decode the model format and get it into/out of an editor. The rpfs are pretty normal but the problem as I remember it was tampering with the files in a way that preserves bones/textures/etc. It's way more complicated than in Source games, especially since normal fucking developers make it easy, and Rockstar makes it hard (not helped by obfuscating parts of the game to prevent cheat development).
TLDR I think the average GTA modder is only familiar with using OpenIV, not replicating how it works. Getting modding back up might take some time.
This will only effect mods that directly modify the game files. Like adding custom models sounds and textures
External mods will be fine, stuff like script hook mods and LSPDFR don't require it

Why stop them when they can temp ban and money wipe people who benefited from them, deliberately or not? Not only is it 'easier', but it may 'motivate' some to buy more Shark Cards to get what was wiped back 'legit'. Even if a majority of what they had WAS legit.
Hell, only reason I even have GTA V myself was my brother bought it last year and tied it to my Steam account. He sadly is one of those people who sees things moreso from the business/companies PoV rather than the consumer and as such is not bothered by any of this at all.
Call me stupid but why would they keep GTA Online files on the client side instead of on the servers?
Because GTAO is P2P, it doesn't use dedicated servers except to hold onto your global inventory and manage your friends list.
And that's why it's so pathetically easy to cheat in GTAO.
Well if it is in the Terms of Service/EULA.
its not though
As late as I may be, meanwhile very little has been done to counter modders running rampant, and in fact innocent people are being punished, and not the modders. Reports are surfacing on Reddit and here that many people are having their bank accounts consisting largely of legitimately earned money mixed with a little amount of illegitimate cash, and the entire account is being purged.
But at least they prevented people from easily modding singleplayer, right? Those people who wanted to test drive cars or create videos were such a fucking menace.
And one of my friends told me the other day how 'childish' it is to refuse to buy a game because of scummy publishers...
Matey I don't care that I'm a tiny fraction of the statistic, I refuse to support shit like this no matter what. I won't forgive EA for all the crap they pulled (new AAA shinies won't change that) and I can do just the same with Take-Two.
Of course these fucks will never change considering how the industry works...
For fuck's sake, this is bullshit. Hopefully someone continues this and gives Take-Two a great big fuck you.

its way the fuck more childish to kill modding which quite genuinely enhances the game and extends the lifetime of it. It allows customers to literally do all the work for them.
and, not only that, but there are way more games to play. Just because someone avoids 6 publishers doesn't mean they can't buy from the bajillion others out there that aren't asshats with customers.
I bet they are trying to kill modding because you can just spawn all the new overpriced cars in singleplayer and not have to buy a shitty shark card
Meh. I'll still buy GTA V on PC.
Ffs, I only bought GTAV this year for LSPDFR. Good thing I've got everything downloaded so I can hopefully play offline.

I've received about 700k when a modder joined our game last week. Can't complain to be honest.
Just looked if I still have it and yes, they didn't purge it.

The RAGE hook doesn't depend on OpenIV so you're fine.
-snip- doesnt actually work
This is ataris chance to buy back the driver license and release DRIV6R

I've used OpenIV to replace a lot of the default vehicles and other art assets, but thankfully yes the default workings of the mod won't be affected.
I have put off buying Civ 6, XCOM 2, and Mafia III for this reason, and it looks like I'll be continuing this trend by not purchasing Red Dead Redemption 2 as well. It's a shame because I really love Rockstar's commitment to quality, but since it seems Take-Two has it's Vice Grip on their properties, it's preventing me from enjoying their games.
Majority of people are still going to give them their money anyway, sadly.
[editline]value[/editline]
I was under the impression that 2k was synonymous with Take-Two, corrected.
I was on the fence about getting RDR2 after they shut down the dedicated server GTAV MP mods, but not anymore. Thanks for making my mind up for me T2, you shower of bastards.
The Steam reviews are taking quite a hit since the news, pretty much all of the recent popular reviews are negative towards Take Two.
Fuck you Take Two
When i got a better laptop,i want to play and mod Gta V
Now my dream is completely ruined
GTA V wasn't even good anyways.
I really regret being suckered into the hype machine and buying this.
the EU should make modding a right
We'll need something like this too in the US anyways more generally because in computer software there are some cunts who try to claim that circumventing their software and reverse engineering/modding it is copyright infringement.

I dunno. I thought 5 was worth it.
What REALLY shouldn't have ever happened is anyone giving them money for shark cards.

Here we have a law that allows you to study the program's underlying principles and allows you to modify it to get it to cooperate with an independently created program.
