i'm definitely going to buy a switch, i skipped the wii u.
the little joycons feel really fucking good, the haptic feedback vibration thingo is really cool.
Phones are made with glass screens that can't be scratched even with most metal tools. The Switch's screen is soft plastic and that's utterly indefensible in this day and age. Nintendo could have charged $10 more for the console and given us a glass screen.

It's arguable.
The materials have trade offs, with the soft plastic being far less likely to shatter like glass, but more able to take on scratches. Plastic with a tempered glass screen protector can get a little bit of the best of both worlds, since it is resistant to scratching but also to shattering.
It's possibly less a straight up cost decision and possibly made to make the screen more likely to survive drops, or maybe the plastic screen had some electronic, structural, or temperature qualities that were preferable.

As you can see in the video, it suffers badly in scratching tests but has preferable qualities over glass when exposed to kinetic energy, bending, or heat.
Never owned a Nintendo console but even I'm seriously considering getting one.
Right now the console is great First party games + Indie games galore.
And you can take it into your bed and to your shitter.

The last phone(s) with plastic screens were the Shaterproof Motorolas, and all of them received terrible reviews due to their screens being scratched from something as simple as being in your pants. The only benefit you could argue is it won't shatter into parts that could cut you, but that generally implies that very young children are your target audience, and even then I see more young kids on iPads than I do on Switches.
I love my switch, but
only 1 month in and the portable screen already has a tiny dead pixel line. I hope this doesnt get worse
My only question is, can you play 100% of the games without using the screen?
I absolutely hate the wii u pad and got rid of all my games that required it.
My only question is, can you play 100% of the games without using the screen?
Yes.
I only bought the switch for Zelda. Haven’t touched it since
Not only is the tech impressive for a portable, but more importantly than that Nintendo made TWO first party titles that released within 7 months of each other, and not only are they good enough to be GOTY contenders, but they both have solid arguments for being the best entries in their respective franchises. Add to that all the third party support, indie devs, and the promise of up to 4 more major franchise entries next year (Kirby, Yoshi, Pokemon, and Metroid) and they've got the software to back up the hardware which was one of the WiiU's major failings.
BOTW was fun but it is far, far from the best Zelda game for a myriad of reasons.

Well, think about it this way.
If you get a glass screen protector (they cost like 10 dollars), then you get all of the benefits of it being shockproof and also all of the benefits of a hard screen.
The ONLY thing I'm not liking about the switch is how shit it is at connecting to wifi, but if you use wired connection then it's just so great
I want a Switch so bad, especially for Odyssey or Breath of the Wild.
Love my Switch and i'm pleased it's doing well.
Heres hoping Nintendo doesn't do the usual Nintendo thing and fuck it all up.

Now we're back at square 1. I get no benefits of a shatterproof screen because the screen protector will shatter if I drop it now, and I had to pay money for something the console should have come with -- a glass screen.
Now I also run the risk of improper screen protector application that could make me pay even more money for something the console should have come with.

Two very different purposes. The Switch is more like a tablet that has a docking station.
the dock scratching was a manfuacturer defect on the docks part and is not normal. it hasn't been a problem since launch. hell i got mine launch day and never had scratches on the screen from the dock.

it's not possible to use the screen while docked because the screen is the console itself. it needs to be in the dock to be on the tv.
Where is the bar? The trailer actually showcased everything the Wii U was capable off and didn't lie about anything.
The actual reasons why the Wii U didn't sell:
- Bad name (people confused it with the Wii, didn't know it was a successor)
- Bad concept (you could play off-tv but not always, you could use the Pro Controller but not always, not even devs knew what they should do with the console)
- Bad marketing (mostly targeted towards kids)
- Bad design (very unattractive and looks like designed for children)
The Switch doesn't have any of these issues.
The Wii U game pad looked like one of those Quantum Pad things I had as a kid; it's clunky and was a huge turnoff for me, but unfortunately that was the only controller I had to stick with

Now I'm curious how many wahoos, hiyahs, splats, and blue shells there have been.

I thought it scratched mine as well, but it was actually some grease/residue from the small rubber pads inside the dock. It really looked like scratches, but it all came off with screen cleaning wipes.
The only reason I don't have one already is because I don't want to buy a TV for those times when I COULD use a TV and play it like a regular console, and because the damn computer always diverts my attention towards it.
I mean, I got a 2DS which I love more than I thought I would (I don't know why, but I really like it) and that also doesn't gets enough attention out of me.
I still really want one though.
The Switch was the fastest console to be worth the money in 1 day.
And that was when I bought it and started playing Zelda, that game alone was worth the price I paid for it all.
And even if it wasn't, well the damn lineup is pretty solid, I bought a Switch game nearly every month and I now own more games for it than I do for my PS4 which I got in 2015.

Not really.
You pay the 10 bucks, you drop your switch like I did (slipped in the bathroom) and chuck it at a tile floor, the protector shatters, and the screen is fine because it's made of indestructible plastic.
You pay 10 more bucks and now your device is like new.
It's 10 dollars. Just get one.

Even less than that, because the one I linked comes in a two-pack for that very reason. They're literally designed to shatter.
Considering the dock scratching is a minority issue i feel like griping about how it doesnt come with a $10 screen protector is a bit much. If youre already gonna be dropping a minimum of $360 for the damn thing with a game i think $10 is in your price range
[editline]14th December 2017[/editline]
Ive had mine since launch and handle it like a braindead monkey and it still has no sxratches.
If I'm dropping almost 400 bucks, the least they could do is throw in a screen protector.
I would also complain if my CPU didn't come with thermal paste, even if paste is less than 10 bucks.
Yeah, honestly the Switch should come with a screen protector, but I don't think that's a good reason not to buy a Switch. That's like not buying a car because it didn't come with floor mats.
Have they recently done some extra hardware QA for the switch, because I remember a few had a habit of just screaming random high pitched electrical noises till the battery died.
If I'm dropping almost 400 bucks, the least they could do is throw in a screen protector.

I understand your point, and I agree, but I think it's arguably fine considering the price.
And as to your example, I build PCs and I've bought several CPUs that came with no thermal paste. Does it suck? Hell yes. But when I spent less than $5 to buy a tube of thermal paste, I'm not going to let that mean I'm not going to finish my PC. To add onto that, I've never bought a smartphone that came with a screen protector, and considering they can cost over 3x what the Switch goes for I'm more pissed about them.
Are you wrong? Of course not. Where we disagree is the degree of how reasonable the complaint is.
I got these bands for my switch instead of a screen protector and have so far had no issues with scratches.
I'll admit though, you shouldn't really need to buy an extra accessory (and the ones I used in particular are actually kinda cheap quality, and make it a tighter fit in the dock).

Was this confirmed by Nintendo? I haven't kept track of the Switch since launch.

People have different scruples I guess. I dont know many people who would care about not gettinf a screen protector for it. Phones are about the only electronic device it makes sense (to me) to get a protector for anyway.
