Out of curiosity, how many reusable rockets been re-used so far, and how much does it cost vs a new rocket?
Out of curiosity, have any of the re-usable rockets been reused yet?
Yes, the leaning one above has launched and landed before. Another one has been launched before as well. If you read the OP you would see:
This will be SpaceX's second reflight of a first stage
I can't wait to see how they solve returning the second stage.
You thought landing the first stage was hard? Doesn't even scratch the surface on returning the second one.
I'm thinking... inflatable heat shield. Then parachutes, then soft-ish landing

I could see them doing that if they try it during the FH demo. If they ever try and redesign the second stage for proper reuse I'd expect something similar to the ITS.
I can't see the Merlin 1D Vacuum engine being sufficiently powerful enough (specific impulse) for landing, plus the size of the engine bell would cause a lot more drag than those of the 9 Merlin 1D's.
Musk has hinted in tweets that he would like to make the 2nd stage reusable though, so there must be some ingenious approach that will one day blow everyones collective mind
Looks like B1029's grid fins took some damage:

B1029 is a fucking historic rocket. I hope it gets a nice cushy museum exhibit for the rest of time.

Landing a second stage has been looked at but just not worth it economically to do it. It's just easier/cheaper for it burn up than it is to add so much hardware and fuel for burns and landings and heat protection.

They're going to look into it for Falcon Heavy according to Musk tweets.

Oh shit didn't know that, that's dope.

I think it's something that personally bothers Musk that they couldn't achieve. He wanted to get working on Mars stuff, but now it sounds like they have the right margins to make it possible.

If he wants it, they'll find a way to make it work.

I think he has just talked about doing it for the demo mission. Any hardware added for recovery on stage 2 comes out of the payload mass at a 1:1 ratio. If they ever go for full reuse on the Falcon series I expect they will do a full redesign of stage 2.

Yeah, I don't think the FH attempt will be a different upper stage. They'll probably just make an attempt at re-entering it like the "hail Mary" mentioned in the article.
