I wonder what General Franco would think about terrorism if he were still alive. Sad for these people, I hope everyone will recover as well as they can.
He would've probably blamed the jews. He was sure there was/is a zionist conspiration going on.
This is a shame. It's hard talking to people about these kind of things because there is no obvious solution
One of the guys was arrested and his name published. His facebook profile is being filled with thousands of comments from death threats to deus vult memes
I'm reading speculation judging by some posts on his Facebook, that he shared a lot of neo-nazi videos relating to "Jewish conspiracies". :s:

The same he thought of everything, it's part of the global judeo masonic communist conspiracy, plus franco was friendly with muslims, I don't think it would have happened at all..
13 people dead, 50 injured.
Fuck these guys.
One suspect shot and killed.
One suspect shot and killed.
After he rammed his car into a group of policemen, which left three policemen wounded, no further word on the severity of their injuries.
Wait, so there have been more attacks after the first initial attack?
A family friend works at an ice cream shop right there. She was on her way to work when it happened, and saw everything. She's alright physically speaking, but probably scarred for life...
Update:
-80 injured
**16 of them are seriously injured/critical condition**
-13 people dead
-Two suspects have been arrested and are in police custody. One suspect was shot and killed.
Fuck, hope my cousin was not there.
Also, side note but as this is not polidicks, here we go again with far-right politicians of Italy and France 9more the former than the latter) being jackals about this. And is disgusting.
*sigh*
This trend is absolutely maddening and so hard to prevent.
Reading about this really upsets and saddens me.
Fucking animals.
Apparently this is potentially huge. They had a house explode last night. Suspected bomb making op that was gonna be used with the van attacks and now Barcelona authorities are telling people to shelter in place theres an operation underway. At work listening to it on TV.

Guardian has a live tracker. The van driver also escaped and one of the suspects that was ID'd used stolen papers so no one knows who he is. ISIS also claiming responsibility.

Oh for fuckssake, I hope that that isn't where those stolen army goods from Portugal a month ago ended up. Whoever did that break-in stole a few dozen kilograms of C4 then. This can get even worse over the next few days unless the Spanish police do an amazing job over the following days.

Doesnt IS do this all the time? Whenever an attack happens they say it was there guys as a show of power but most times it's some idiots who identified with the ideology but never made contact to the leaders in Iraq or Syria?
It sucks that bollards are gonna be common place around all public squares soon. Like in the city I live in they are on the main pedestrian routes but it always reminds me that they're crazy fuckers out there who think it's their duty to kill/injure people with their vehicles. Really fucked times, thoughts are with everyone in Barcelona. Stay safe guys
Bollards are just common sense safety measures.
Like, not even to specifically protect against terrorist attacks like this.
They should be up there to protect against people who lose control of the vehicle or drunk drivers.

No, places put up bollards because of idiot drivers that think they are above everyone and can park/drive wherever they want. Societies that don't need them are great and it's a sign of people getting along splendidly. Normal bollards aren't for safety and probably wouldn't stop a fast enough car, they are a deterrent for shitty people to park in a square or whatever.
--Actually might as well:
To recap: six terrorists were carrying fake explosives and had a shooting in Cambrils, a small costal town. Five were killed and the sixth one detained, along with two other detained later this night.
Six civilians and a cop hurt, some of them badly.
They presumably were starting to run over people until they crashed with a police van, when they got out and began using their weapons.
Govt will tomorrow decide whether to increase the terror threat level to 5.
Holy shit I could of been there when the van started hitting people as I was going to go to Barcelona yesterday morning. Good thing I didn't end up going. Such a horrible thing to see peoples lives being taken by things such as this
Jesus Christ it's Jason Bourne

NPR said that the Department of State has confirmed that 1 America was killed in the attack and another was injured. No names released yet for privacy.

Okay so let's not bother with putting bollards up at all anywhere, then?
Any future bollards installed should be reinforced with an iron core for these kinds of situarions.
Most bollards I've seen in the US would absolutely destroy a car or truck that hit them, even if it hit it fast enough to uproot it the damage caused would immobilize the vehicle. They make those crazy super bollards that can stop a cement truck at 70mph without deformation or giving an inch, but a normal 6" steel concrete filled bollard would still disable a large truck at speed, but it may get destroyed in the process.

I'm not sure if you get just how well built and reinforced most bollards are.

That's a security bollard, put up in places that enforce vehicle control, not a fucking normal bollard. That might be installed at an embassy or CIA headquarter, but that isn't the norm. Hell, there are anti-terror bollards and shit, there's also hydraulic bollards to restrict access to public spaces. But here in europe a normal bollard is neither secured much nor very stable. You can expect something like this:

No doubt, the car will break down a few kilometers later because cooling fails, but if you were dedicated to race into a crowd, this wouldn't stop you.
Arguing that deep anchor heavy duty bollards should be put up in all public squares is asinine and impractical, security bollards need to either have a huge mass or be anchored extremely well.

I'm against putting up parking deterrents in response to a terror attack, especially in a community that functioned well without it so far.
I'm also not sure putting up anti terror devices everywhere in response to this is the appropriate response, because that is a prime case of changing your way of life in response to terror, something we all should avoid.

Except they don't actually take away your freedoms and are actually a decent way of safety even for Non-terrorist accidents.

Are you being daft on purpose or something? Bollards are more than just """anti-parking deterrants""".
Sudden acceleration on unrecalled cars or elderly drivers is a thing too you know? And these happen as often.
