I personally don't have anything against Goblins but my grandmother still won't forgive them for the war.
You have a higher chance of getting murdered in central and south america than an actual war zone like iraq.
Depending on the place* Let's not be this broad with our criticism, please. You're only skewing your own view of reality if you think of the entirety of Latin America as worse than a warzone. It's got problems, so many problems, and if I didn't agree with that I wouldn't be as eager to get out of this place as I am, but there's no need to be this unrealistic about it. Your average urban center is nowhere near the level of danger you'll find in places like the Amazon.
God there's a lot of people here who sound like they've never left the country they were born in, whos idea of a holiday is sitting on a beach in the Caribbean sipping cocktails. You're not going to get kidnapped the instant you step off the plane in medellin lol
You are posting this in a thread about a woman who got tortured, raped and finally killed as she was just kayaking around.

This is fucked up and the people who did this deserve jail, but it also shows a serious lapse In judgement by someone who should have known better. It's fine to go to these places, but you've got to put more thought into it than a holiday to Ireland, NZ or something. It's just such a fucking shame she paid for this mistake with her life.

Crime rates go higher where poverty exists, so just avoid that, it's common sense. If you're a tourist which one would you visit, a place designed so that tourists can be guided and see great looking stuff like the Cataratas do Iguaçu or the fucking favelas? Just don't be dumb and research a while. Amazon is known for it's crime rates, be aware that the place you're visiting might be different from your hometown. Read the news, I don't know, just don't expect everyone to be friendly. This could've been avoided, she KNEW stuff was bad.

Handwaving it won't make it go away.

I don't see what we said as downplaying the violence, either. It's just about being a tad more nuanced than "This entire continent is more dangerous than a war zone". I'd choose a trip to São Paulo, Cali or Santiago over a visit to Iraq any day of the week, wouldn't you?
