If you're serious the best thing you can do is talk to them, let them know that as their friend you really care about them and that you'd be devastated if they died. maybe gather up their group of friends, you could all talk to them together, even talk to their parents if you're really worried, or a school councilor
I used to know someone who would really be interested in participating in this if I know him at all.
Or, if he continued on the same course his life had back then, now he might even be organizing it.
the original idea (which is likely a russian urban legend) got spread through sensational articles and is now popular enough to warrant copycats as well as swarms of curious kids to check it out. those 'whistleblowers' worried about safety of their children are actually making things worse
But why. I was never this fucking stupid to fall for something like this as a kid
It's less about stupidity and more about vulnerability. Kids that are already considering suicide coming across this could give them a tangible reason to do start down that road. Especially if they're lonely because this is designed to make you feel like you're not alone.
This is a seriously dangerous thing to get into a kids head who is already on the brink of considering self-harm or suicide.

why the hell is it a whale

Somebody you sell overpriced hats to
Oh, that bullshit again
The "haha ironic self-deprecation I want to kill myself" stuff is really popular among the younger teens here, and some of them actually take it seriously, resulting in shit like this
i thought games were supposed to be fun
If it resembles the challenge list in op, talk to them, contact family and if they get to the final 50 days, call ambulance
Calling emergency services should be last resort since hospitals and police can really fuck someone up if they are mentally unwell. But a soft approach can help deter
You should make a post in the depression thread for more guidance
this is not good advice.
why the hell is it a whale
IIRC just part of the original urban legend ("the social network used images of blue whales as a secret sign & group logo")
This and "13 Reasons Why" could motivate children and teenagers to adopt/acquire suicidal tendencies? We like it or not: at a younger age one if more influenciable (or stupid) and peer-pressure can be quite effective and doing stuff you don't want.
13 Reasons Why is a artistic piece that actually shows you why you shouldn't commit suicide. This is an idiotic "game" designed by either sadists or straight up retards (for tuh luls) to get people to try and commit suicide. They are completely different things and do have entirely different messages. Don't just onto the recent bandwagon media has been perpetrating that 13 Reasons Why kills people...
This really sounds like one of those things that news outlets make up to scare people. Nobody is this stupid...right?
This isn't actually a new thing at all, it just only hit the west. It's been in Russian-speaking and Eastern European nations for a few months now.

Pretty much, my mom and grandmother brought it up and we hada discussion about it, then talked to my cousins on why they shouldn't fall for this dumb shit.

If somebody's already suicidal or somehow unstable they could end up going through with this, it doesn't seem that far fetched.
friend of mine sent me excerpts from this and i seriously thought he was sending me snippets from an scp article
what the fuck dude
oh come on most SCPs are better than this

I was always against suicide and self-harm but recently I thought about it a lot more and did already inflict some harm on myself.
Once you start to crack, it's hard to get it out of your head.
why the hell is it a whale
During the craze in Russia, the curators claimed that because whales beached themselves despite their "wisdom and beauty", you should follow their example. That is, commit suicide.
This entire thing is offensively stupid. It's sad that teenage suicides are being blamed on online bullying and a fucking whale meme and not on the depressing socio-economic situation and a lack of mental health facilities. Kids need real help, that is, attention and understanding, not proposed Internet censorship.*
*atm there are bills that would serve to expand govt control over social networks and toughen sentences for leading people to suicide
"blue whale challenge"
I see that the garbowits family name lives on
I'm having trouble understanding this, do people know going into it that the final step is suicide? Or do they let you go through a couple steps first before revealing it to you, so people get suckered in?

I've been worried about this for a long while. At first it was just some dark humor you'd see on maybe 4chan a few years back but suddenly it boomed and every webcomic out there would plaster the "I can't wait to kill myself!" and now it's going strong, and as with any other meme and subculture it just goes younger and younger until you hear your nephews spouting it.
It's disturbing as fuck, but I don't really know what to do about it.
I'm not an expert but this seems to be less like kids somehow "falling for it" or getting tricked into something but just kids that kind of wanted to kill themselves to begin with getting motivated to actually go through with it.
It's awfully shitty and whomever is involved should be stopped, but it doesn't look like "a phenomenon ruining perfectly healthy kids" to me.
I don't really know what to do about it.
well there's been this hella popular solution...
I'm usually the first one to jump on the "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" """"victim"""" blame train but this is.... something else. Notice how protracted the timescale is.
When you start, you're immediately informed of three things:
1. It's already too late to leave
2. You will die at the end of the game
3. They know, or will find, details about your family
"players" probably are thinking that it's funny to participate, or are thinking to themselves that they will be able to leave if it gets too serious because they're better than this guy, or any number of other reasons. Many days in, the curator tells them to do something kind of fucked up, they refuse, and then they get a credible threat with family details.
From then on out it's a psychological trap. This is really dangerous for younger people.
this game doesn't seem very fun

I reckon these steps tend to be passed along by word of mouth or in texts, etc. where they try not to mention where to find the full list of steps or that such a list even exists.

sounds like emo culture is finally making it's way to russia
"If your friends jumped off a bridge would you do it too?"
These kids need help lol
Oddly enough this thing had been floating around /x/ for months and I thought it was a load of overhyped BS that ends up on 4chan from time to time.
Guess not.
