[editline]31st March 2017[/editline]
I keep seeing this diagram. Add "does it stand on two legs" to it and I can accept it.
really? so you'd say no to a Naga or some other half/kin?
really? so you'd say no to a Naga or some other half/kin?
Well, considering how weird snake sex is... but I guess every rule has exceptions? All I'm saying is I close the tab when a furry gets on with an actual dog. But that's enough of that.
"Bill Potts's sexuality will be revealed pretty much straightaway in her second line of dialogue when the show returns to BBC One on 15 April." I don't like this, most people don't just go out spouting "I am Gay", "I am Trans", "I am Pansexual", and so on. They usually take time to build up trust with the person they've just met. It seems nearly every damn LGBT character in Media now does exactly this, "oh hi, DID I MENTION IM GAY/TRANS/WHATEVER????"

There's no winning with these snowflakes.
I can't wait for Moffat's newest Mary Sue companion. I wonder what's her gimmick that makes her super special special going to be or if Moffat's just going to make it "she's a lesbian". The evolution of Moffat from a great writer to a hack is long and full of short quality bumps but one thing is certain. He can't write women for shit. Don't expect Bill's sexuality to feel like anything other than blatant tokenism. He created two characters like that already.
If she said it later people would complain about them "making a big deal out of the reveal". There's no winning with these snowflakes.
People are already complaining about them making a big deal out of this reveal, and it's not the 'snowflakes'
People are already complaining about them making a big deal out of this reveal, and it's not the 'snowflakes'
I think you'll find the "anti-pandering" side is in fact filled with delicate snowflakes who can't bear the thought of minority characters being introduced. It's like there's no right way to do it for them.
I imagine that during the 50's/60's/etc when blacks were starting to actually become equals in film and TV that the same thing happened with them (Albeit in way different light) this is a side effect of a good thing
But doesn't Hollywood still complain that it isn't equal? I never understood that.
But he wasn't a companion. "Companion" in Doctor Who refers to a female mary sue with no character who travels with the Doctor for no reason. Harkness was an actual character. Don't worry, she won't have any character traits.
A companion is anyone who traveled with him in the TARDIS for extended periods of time. "In the long-running BBC television science fiction programme Doctor Who and related works, the term "companion" refers to a character who travels with, or shares the adventures of the Doctor."
If she said it later people would complain about them "making a big deal out of the reveal". There's no winning with these snowflakes.
Theres hundreds of ways to show that a character is LGBT and have people not complain, the reason people complain is because half the time a series does it, it feels forced.
Well atleast this time the companion wont fancy the doctor and ruin the story line, instead we'll get forced lesbian stuff rather than natural progression of the companion
Theres hundreds of ways to show that a character is LGBT and have people not complain, the reason people complain is because half the time a series does it, it feels forced.
I'm not really sure that's true. Ive seen LGBT representation in a number of games, films, comics- and no matter how they do it it always "feels forced" to someone. Sir Hammerlock in borderlands? Never explicitly states he's gay- makes a passing reference to his ex boyfriend in two side quests. "serves no purpose" Forced Arcade Gannon in fallout new vegas- he basically outright tells a male protagonist that he's gay in the first conversation you have with him. " His whole personality is "gay" Forced Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, Never explicitly stated to be gay, at all in the books. IIRC Part of his backstory involved killing a lover who turned evil, and another part invovled defeating a famous dark wizard. J.k Rowling later reveals that these events are one and the same, and that the male dark wizard was also the lover. "Serves no purpose, obviously just added to pander to people retroactively" Forced Dorian in Dragon age Inquisition. Son of a powerful politician from a foreign province- his sexuality is very important to his personal story arc, as it deals with discrimination against a child by their parent due to rigid tradition and the impact this could have on the individual and their relationship with their family. "SJW fan-fiction bullshit- His entire personality is "gay" and it was just in there to pander to people" Forced There really is no winning with some people, the slightest whiff of the dreaded diversity, and they fold their arms and find an excuse to hate it.

That's a great way of making it realistic and not "forced"
Ah, okay. The only good way to make a character gay is to hide their sexuality away! Perfect!
:badzing: Did you even read what he said before commenting? He was saying how to be subtle about it besides the classic "HELLO I AM KEVIN, IM GAY!" He was NOT saying that they had to hide their sexuality. When was the last time you heard a person in fiction or non-fiction state their sexuality upon meeting someone?
In my opinion, the ideal way to treat a gay character is to never explicitly mention it in the first place since it's likely never relevant to the plot or story in the first place, at most, a few blink-and-you'll-miss-it references. It shouldn't need some fanfare, or blatant announcement, or else it really just seems like you're saying, "See this person? Gay, but not really anything else". No other notable personality, or traits beyond that fact. It just rubs me off as lazy pandering when it's presented that way.

She'll probably just be shown talking to her girlfriend.
It shouldn't need some fanfare, or blatant announcement, or else it really just seems like you're saying, "See this person? Gay, but not really anything else".
Ah, okay. The only good way to make a character gay is to hide their sexuality away! Perfect!
Ah, you must be straight since you didn't say "I'm gay" in this post because clearly according to you the only good way to make a character gay is to make it the main point of everything despite it being irrelevant :downs: Should Miller introduce himself as "hello jensen I'm gay" despite it being never being a plot point unlike Jensen's straightness being relevant in Human Revolution due to his history with Megan?
I look forward to the day when this sort of thing isn't a news story.
It's a news story because its a great clickbait title. Article: "Bill’s gay and it shouldn’t be a big deal." actual quote Also the article: Making a big published deal about it
Little disappointed that it's another lesbian character. When I read the name 'Bill' I thought it would just be some gay dude, but apparently homosexual men are still too icky for the BBC's flagship show (yes I know there was Jack Harkness, but he was pansexual and only really explicitly gay in Torchwood). I can already tell she's just going to be some young mary sue who can inexplicably do everything, like all of Moffat's companions, only now with all the quips from that victorian era lizard lady that was in the show a couple seasons back.
Would you treat a straight character in the same way? i.e. never show them with their partner unless it was plot-relevant?
uh, yes, actually, because oddly enough most romantic liaisons in this kind of tv tend to be extremely hamfisted and badly portrayed by any measure of the word why does who companion x9 is fucking matter when the entire universe is at stake?
really? so you'd say no to a Naga or some other half/kin?
Too much information.
About above example from Borderlands - the right way to show a gay character is Sir Hammerlock. The wrong way is Janey Springs.
I'm glad no one flipped out over this particular inclusion of a FtM trans character :v:
Sir Hammerlock in borderlands? Never explicitly states he's gay- makes a passing reference to his ex boyfriend in two side quests. "serves no purpose" Forced
That doesn't sound forced to me tho?
I'm glad no one flipped out over this particular inclusion of a FtM trans character :v: -snip
what is that even?
That doesn't sound forced to me tho?
I think the point was that all the examples he listed are not forced but homophones or other idiots think they are.
what is that even?
Female alien character from Destiny that became king as the only heir to the crown, according to the Wiki. Not sure if that's really FtM though.
That doesn't sound forced to me tho?
I think you missed the point a little.
