Depends on who makes and sells them, Valve has a really slim manufacturing pipeline (they had amazingly small staff and overhead for their controller run) that lets them get things out for super cheap while still making margin. HTC on the other hand is getting pretty big, I also think they intentionally overprice the VR peripherals so they can pump money into their VR funding, that's just a hunch though.
typically a slim manufacturing pipeline means extremely high cost. that's why they partnered with HTC: it's impossible to get the parts needed unless you have a big company to do it for you.

[editline]23rd June 2017[/editline] But yeah you're right about getting certain parts. Specifically I think good panels are hard to get your hands on, which is of upmost importance for VR.
Knuckles compatible Sonic & Knuckles VR game featuring Knuckles.
& Knuckles.
I'm not gonna lie, when I saw that thread title I actually thought they were making a Knuckles VR game.
I'm already anticipating the search engine problems.
You can keep it, thanks. I want VR to go away as fast as possible. (User was banned for this post ("Why reply?" - Craptasket))
You can keep it, thanks. I want VR to go away as fast as possible.
well jeez that's a bit rude i hope something you enjoy goes away too
You can keep it, thanks. I want VR to go away as fast as possible.
First: Why? Second: It never will. Third: Why not just ignore it?
That sounds like the best possible use case here. Knuckle controllers for all games, with an additional 3d printed rifle with two normal Vive controllers for shooters. Shame nobody is going to spend the time implementing that as a feature since so few people are going to have both.
you only need one tracker on a gun for it to work what in theory you could eventually get away with is have one hand super well tracked, and just have the other hand holding the gun
you only need one tracker on a gun for it to work what in theory you could eventually get away with is have one hand super well tracked, and just have the other hand holding the gun
You only need one tracker to track an object of course but I think they're referring to the games that have been designed to use 2 controllers to aim more precisely. There's tonnes of pics up on reddit of people making PVC and 3d printed rigs to aim better. Example: [thumb]https://i.redd.it/so964k510pmy.jpg[/thumb]
you only need one tracker on a gun for it to work what in theory you could eventually get away with is have one hand super well tracked, and just have the other hand holding the gun
Or they could give the puck Bluetooth and also make it affordable, then you could just own one of those and slap it onto different peripherals.
this is literally the right half of a steam controller chopped off which is a great concept since holding a steam controller with one hand is actually a superb way to browse porn without having to reach for mouse or keyboard
You can keep it, thanks. I want VR to go away as fast as possible.
the fuck? you realize while this form of VR won't always be the gaming we use in the future I gaurun-fucking-tee gaming will eventually boil down into either extreme VR or AR. If you don't like it then honestly good luck staying interested in games here in 10+ years, maybe even less. More on-topic; I had heard that they were testing some haptic feedback gloves for VR gaming at E3 as well.
I honestly don't care much for VR right now because it just feels like an overpriced gimmick. It's really nice to see more actual progression into this stuff though because I can't wait for it to be explored a lot more fully and developed from a gimmick into something genuinely amazing. These are some good signs for the future of gaming. The day I can pretend to be a Jedi in a fully immersive Star Wars vr experience is the day I can die happy.
Nintendo is developing Arms. Valve is developing Kunckles. I can't wait to see other devs make games like "Knees" or "Toes"
Who will develop dick?

oh no...
So there was a science-themed festival in my city and they had the Vive in there (with a single tilt-brush). It was amazing. Do want. Also, somebody did a thing where you put on the headset and look through the eyes of a real-world robot that you can drive around with a joystick (you look around, and the stereo camera on the robot matches your movement). I got immediately swarmed by children though. Any idea what will happen to the price in the near future?

Looks very interesting. I don't have any VR stuff, hopefully in the future I will, but this seems that it's being made by Valve themselves, right? Hopefully that means it's going to be a bit cheaper.
Who will develop dick?
Pornhub. It stopped being a gimmick right around the time that m&kb/gamepad was left behind. At this point, I'd say it's a full-fledged new market and everything from new controllers to better tracking to higher resolution headsets is just perfecting the peripherals.
Although we've got a bunch of Kickstarters that tacked on VR as an incentive a few years ago and have no idea how to implement it now that they're reaching completion.

I still haven't experienced VR.

I'm not knocking VR, it's off the fucking wall but what I mean is the longer you wait the better the experience will be. Imagine waiting 3 years from now. Your first experience would be mind blowing. I'm excited, these controllers look a lot more comfortable. I find my hands cramp sometimes because the vive controllers are awkward to hold
I still haven't experienced VR.
I can tell you that you shouldn't bother with the cardboard or samsung vr, they are astonishingly bad. The vive and Oculus are pretty good, the two things they need to really hit the mainstream is them to be wireless and cheaper
the second one is way more mechanically advanced, uses soft-body muscle hydraulics
As someone who works in robotics, the "soft body" system is actually a lot less mechanically advanced. Keep in mind that "soft-body muscle hydraulics" is both technically wrong (those are obviously pneumatics, not hydraulics, hydraulics use oil and are messy as hell) and it's a bit misleading. It's a colourful way of saying "there's air tubes and some valves", it's a lot less fancy than it looks and it's actually incredibly easy to make out of cheap parts from a medical supply store. Pneumatics in general are so simple they predate electronics, and because of the equipment they require they're often less precise and way bulkier for the whole setup. You can see their big table of electronics includes a basic vacuum pump (recognized it from the video, it's this one from hobby site sparkfun), a bunch of solenoid valves, etc. The only real advantage to this setup is that it can hypothetically be more flexible in exchange for being bulky, awkward, potentially loud, and imprecise is that it can flex more, but they're not even bringing the air all the way out to the fingers. The tubes stop at the hands, so in effect they're totally useless and you could just as easily be using a much more compact, cheap, and accurate servo. That's not even mentioning the fact that those wires would need to be tuned to fit the users hand whereas the other system could dynamically adapt to your hand pretty easily by design.
