There's a vigil/candlelighting ceremony going on right now in my town for the 17 that passed. Never seen my town so crowded in my 22 years of living here.
If you guys wanna watch - https://www.facebook.com/ABCNews/videos/10156914376158812/
Looks like it just ended, my bad
Who is this guy and why should we care what he thinks?
What exactly is this attitude?
Clearly he is someone whose opinion reaches far more people and weighs more than yours.
Right off the bat, here's two good points that have shown to work pretty much everywhere in the world:
- Greater focus on mental health, a better support system for those who are vulnerable and prone to cause these kinds of incidents.
- Stricter gun control to prevent people with mental instabilities or harmful ideologies attaining guns.
I have to say it's pretty ludicrous to ask someone else for the solution, though. Instead of actively working together to fix the problem you just yell "well what's the solution then?!!" and flair your arms in the air, as if there was nothing you could do. Lazy.
I noticed that, uh, very few of the 44 people who agreed with this post which claims I'm unwilling to offer solutions actually came back to see me offer solutions, let alone discuss them with us. Are we just going to continue to pretend that no gun owners want to talk solutions next time this happens?
Don't make this a "cares about ratings" issue... I'm just pointing out that 44 people apparently share this sentiment and I'm trying to get them to engage in a better discussion than the "u suck" "no u" that these usually start, progress, and end as.
Fox News headline from the start of this whole thing have been fucking terrible. HIGHSCHOOL BLOODBATH, MONSTER AMONG THEM is the current one.

It gets even worse. Saw this go down on Facebook.

Did it occur to you that they might have better things to do than to enact the debate equivilant of an immovable object meeting and unstoppable force? Because that's what internet debates boil down to most of the time, and life's too damn short to squander on a glowing rectangle emitting unswayed opinions.
Good work on you for making your wall of text in the end, though. I agree with most of it so I see no point in arguing. :ok:

Why did you start this post snide & condescending and end it with praise? I'm getting really mixed signals here.

Why did you start yours asking about ratings and end it by saying it had nothing to do with ratings? There's two parts to your post, there's two parts to mine. I think your initial call-to-action to respond on your wall of text was dumb because it doesn't consider that people might have lives outside of Facepunch, but I don't think the actual wall of text itself was dumb - so credit where it's due and all that.

This post is giving me a headache. If my level tone is starting to sound insincere, I want you to know that's because it is, since we are on page 13 and I am still fighting strawmen and red herrings while actual valuable conversation has been sparse. My post doesn't contradict itself.
The purpose of my post was to ask why so many people expressed agreement with the sentiment that people on the pro-gun side of this debate are dumb for not wanting to have a conversation about it but then refused to engage in that conversation when it was offered. "Cares about ratings" is a common ban reason for commenting on ratings, so I wanted to make very clear that the purpose of my comment wasn't to complain about ratings or criticize people for rating you but to invite those people to have a discussion, because they agreed with a post that said, "why doesn't anyone want to have a discussion?"

kid was gonna shoot up my school a couple months ago, finally got busted when someone (family member i think) found a journal of his hitlist and threats he had written down
cops locked him and another kid up, found guns and explosive substances in their houses, they got terrorism/threat charges
i checked their social media, they'd been posting stuff about school shootings for a long time now, including a lot of columbine stuff
nobody pays attention to that kind of stuff i guess...

This is something that occurs in every thread about guns. People come in, spout well-meaning but uninformed solutions to a very complex problem and snark up the thread with zingers and then leave. At around page 4 or so, people actually start to have a conversation and educated posts are made.
It's a pretty tiring cycle to be honest, and it's usually the same people doing it every time.

Because people are more concerned with "justice" than solving problems. They want to see them as criminals only, instead of people who should be treated for their mental health issues. They belonged in a hospital long before a prison.
Otherwise, people have no non-gun-related solution on what to do.

Jereb (ROF guy)'s fans really really really appreciate what he's done for them today.
First of all thanks for taking it completely the wrong way I never asked anyone to care for his opinion, I was merely posting it because it adds to the conversation that we're having here which also happens to fall in line with some of the users in this thread too.
Second of all rather than ask who this guy is maybe you could click on the video and you'll see that his name is Phillip DeFranco(I even mentioned his last name so I don't know how you missed that) who is a YouTube news channel who does current events and he did a special piece on this situation with no monetization or anything.
I don't mean to be combative, I genuinely wonder. And yeah, I went to his channel and saw the videos he does, but that still doesn't explain to me why I should give his opinion any weight over the people posting on the articles about this on Facebook.

That's because I don't have a channel where I rant about current events.
**Tweets from twats**
Maybe its just because I don't go on twitter but it is so fucking bizarre to me that these people exist.
Like, the profile pic for that Jacob Smith guy looks so normal. Then you look at his username with the 1488 shit in there and making comments about (((them))) and its just like what the fuck man. How did you get this way?
In my opinion you don't really get into that stuff from being a freak, just have less friends who'll tell you you're wrong <-- (most important) and more news from increasingly more radical outlets. Having a shitty life helps too.
Once you're convinced of certain things you start to see the world a different way. One leads to another. If you get convinced that the jews control the world then it's rational to blame them for everything, everyone around you will blame them too.
Also that's a screenshot from gab, the twitter alternative for people who love to see an antisemitic tweet every 5 seconds. If you want to know what news stories are useful for far right views/secretly a conspiracy for some alt right shit just hop on their "popular news" page.
It's horrible what he has done and I think semi automatic rifles should be banned. I do think the chap who did it looks like the adoring fan out of oblivion, and deserves the death penalty.

if you want to ban semi-automatic rifles I'm gonna need a better suggestion for hog hunting from you. the easiest and most humane way to kill them without spending $250 a round thus far has been semi-automatic fire
if you want to ban hunting rifles then I have nothing to say to you, because banning hunting rifles is essentially telling the poor "no fuck you you're not allowed to eat meat"

The rules he revoked were adding people who had their Social Security checks managed by someone else to NICS. Which I see as illegal since they were not adjudicated before a judge. Plus having your finances managed by someone else does not mean you are a danger to yourself or others. And I'm pretty sure the person who did this (the shooting this thread is about) did not qualify for Social Security. So this would have done nothing.
Edit: Also, if you were unaware the ACLU was against the EO Obama did (the one revoked in that image).
https://www.aclu.org/blog/disability-rights/gun-control-laws-should-be-fair
This month, Congress repealed a rule that would have registered thousands of Social Security recipients with mental disabilities, who have others manage their benefits, into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to prevent them from owning firearms.
The American Civil Liberties Union does not oppose gun control laws. As an organization dedicated to defending all constitutional rights, we believe the Second Amendment allows reasonable restrictions to promote public safety.
But gun control laws, like any law, should be fair, effective and not based on prejudice or stereotype. This rule met none of those criteria.
In this era of “alternative facts,” we must urge politicians to create laws based on reliable evidence and solid data.
The thousands of Americans whose disability benefits are managed by someone else range from young people with depression and financial inexperience to older adults with Down syndrome needing help with a limited budget. But no data — none — show that these individuals have a propensity for violence in general or gun violence in particular.
-snip- fuck it.

I wouldn't use hog hunting as a defense for not banning semi-autos, especially in this context.

bow and arrow?
banning hunting rifles is essentially telling the poor "no fuck you you're not allowed to eat meat"
How big a percentage of the poor population of Americans do you think get even half their meat from hunting? It's not the fuckin' stone-age any more, and factory-farming has made meat ridiculously cheap.
I'm not even against hunting; I'm very strongly pro-hunting, but your argument is just retarded right there. Hunting is not what allows regular meat-consumption for the bottom of society in the 21st century; industrialization is.
bow and arrow?
If you actually think you can hunt hogs, a dangerous pest, with a bow and arrow, then just lol. Like, hogs will and can charge at you, and often need more than one bullet to take down in that case. A semi-auto is going to protect you. A bow and arrow won’t.
We just had 4 threats this morning in 2 countys in Eastern NC and I believe 1 threat in Upstate SC.
I feel like the media blowing this up just causes people who have the idea and "plan" planted in their mind that this is the greenlight to go and do it. Copy cats or just cool edgey kids.. This is getting a bit excessive.
Edgy kids, or kids just looking for a quick Get-Out-Of-School-Free card. I've lost count the number of times after some school shooting or bombing, there'd be multiple bomb threats a day or two after.

Well, you CAN hunt them with bows, it's just really difficult.
Not to mention, when you suggest banning semi-auto's, it looks like you just want to reduce the number of deaths per mass shooting as opposed to preventing mass shootings all together.
I'm not jumping on the gun-debate itself, but if that's a feasible step, is that not preferable to nothing at all? Like, yeah, banning guns isn't going to make mass murders stop, but you said yourself, it'll cause less casualties. Meanwhile, preventing mass shootings would require a cultural overhaul.
