In the context of this thread, I find it interesting the way people complain about those kinds of classes you mentioned being mandatory, core curriculum. I often hear people complain that STEM students shouldn't have to take literature or philosophy because it's outside their direct area of study, but if we're going by the premise that university is supposed to make you competent at life and not just your chosen career, then classes that teach critical thinking seem every bit as important as mathematics.
