I'm suddenly dreaming of a long awaited upgrade from a GTX 760. A card I bought specifically to play Bioshock Infinite.
My 760 is still running super solid after many years of use and abuse. Suprisingly, it still handles the majority of modern games without much of an issue. As the years go on, I have noticed the average in-game video settings have to be set slightly lower than when I first got the card. (average high everything to medium/medium-height now).
However, I welcome an upgrade to a 1080 ti as soon as possible. :v:
Jesus, they're $200 more than I paid for mine last November right now
used ETH cards aren't actually that big of a deal. Eth is mainly memory heavy, whereas bitcoin hit the actual GPU die much harder and hence pulled a lot more power through the VRMs. around 2011-2012, many 3rd party cards had worse VRM configs than they do now, esp AMD ones. So a lot of 7xxx amd cards basically roasted their VRMs or wore the fans out because they were running so hard. Etherium is typically only gonna put 70-80% load on the GPU, a used card may as well be any other one that was gamed on.
I had a 2x6950 setup back in the day, and both of the cards had mined BTC in a small farm for about a year straight, I'm pretty sure the ambient temps in what was essentially the closet they were being run in didn't go below about 60C. It was one of the most unstable experiences I have ever had, constantly artifacting.
I got both of them for free though so can't really complain about that.

The 6950 is essentially a space heater
They invest into all this hardware and just give up after one dip in the exchange rates. Classic example of buy high, sell low. People are idiots

Are they though? You're talking about people that often earn considerable returns on their initial investments.
And all for the sake of internet funny money.
It is real money if people agree that it's real money, that's how money works, but I don't really believe they've made enough of it to justify all this
Are they though? You're talking about people that earned considerable returns on their initial investments.
Have they? Is it enough money for their trouble? Does it even cover the electricity bill?
Buy them up now boys, ETH is going up after this whole segwit mess is dealt with. People are just pulling the money they made buying ETH at $10 and $20 to buy BTC while its dipping so they can double up or more.
Last chance to get a cheap GPU

I don't mine personally so I don't have all the cost effectiveness details, but I ran some numbers from this time last month through a calculator. This is a simulation of 7x rx580s. This doesn't factor in hardware costs because it varies and I can't be bothered to look up all the costs, but it gives you an idea. Remember, mining was profitable extending back months before as well.

RX 580s were about $250 if we're low-balling it. That means $1750 is your initial hardware cost, if you factor in actual eth and bitcoin prices during the past few months, I doubt the vast majority of hobbyist miners actually made much if any profit. I also doubt they were trading their eth to BTC or USD daily or something, meaning most of them probably still have their eth or btc. This crash directly lowers their margins.
Good news though, once this bottoms out, I'd start buying eth, since it's inevitably going to go the way of BTC And spike again in a few years.

i wouldnt consider it 'fun money' when 1 coin is worth $150

Yeah, but people buying graphics cards to make magic internet black market money is pretty bizarre.

and someone buying a metal detector and searching for gold nuggets (and successfully finding some) isnt? :v:
Just checked ebay, prices have fallen a good deal since their peak:
RX560 ~ $110 (MSRP $100)
RX570 ~ $250-260. (MSRP $180 USD)
RX580 ~ $300 (MSRP $230)
GTX1060 ~ $220 - 230 (MSRP $200)
GTX1070 ~ $400+ (MSRP $400)
GTX1080 ~ $~500+ (MSRP $549????) <-- By some act of god the ebay price is below msrp which I definitely didn't expect, although it may have to do with it's shit mining performance.
I'd like to note that although they have dropped heavily, you need to remember that these cards are still (atleast for the 570 / 580) ~$80 more when used than the manufacturer says you should sell them for when brand new.
Unless you're mining Litecoins, kinda dumb to buy GPU's to mine them. ASIC cards are many times more efficient for what I've read.

This is specifically Ethereum mining, which was designed so ASIC's wouldn't have an advantage.

virtual coin mining isn't a hobby
virtual coin mining isn't a hobby
It's a hobby for me and a few other people i know :v:
edit: Oops, my apologies - misdirected my anger.
Hope you guys are having fun dicking over everyone who wants to buy a GPU for its actual purpose.
I don't waste my time or money on GPU mining. I mine currency that uses hard drive space running a Proof of Capacity algorithm.
Hope you guys are having fun dicking over everyone who wants to buy a GPU for its actual purpose.
I don't think hobbyist miners are the ones buying up all the GPUs and killing the supply.
Within the last weeks, there was one ICO that successfully locked up yet another $200mil+ worth of ETH. There were many more ICOs however. And of them we now have another confirmed "hacked site" with a scam address that has, as of now, accumulated almost $8mil worth of ETH. People are really really mad and/or scared of the whole ICO rush bullshit.
Depending on what is or isn't done with that scam wallet, I fear ETH has yet to bottom out. So much issues. I believe a lot more cheap used GPUs will be flooded onto the market by the trend miners who don't really know what they were doing and now just want to get out of this sinking ship. Everyone else is just patiently waiting out the storm, as usual.

Now actually is a really good time to get into cryptocurrency investing too, since most coins have been tanking pending the upcoming soft fork of Bitcoin.

Sure it is. Mining rigs are fucking incredible pieces of hardware, I wish I could afford to build one. I might actually afford it now, come to think of it.

One day...Well maybe not for Ethereum anymore since PoS is coming closer.

Buying a metal detector to look for gold to profit on is absolutely stupid and bizzare if you're not just metal detecting for a hobby actually yeah.
If you're into it as a hobby then fine, by all means, but if you think you're going into it to get rich have I got a bridge to sell you.

There are trading cards worth more than that, doesn't mean they're money.
You're literally mining something labeled as "currency" just in the hopes of turning around and selling it for actual, real money down the line.

There are also plenty of "hobbyist" miners who use gold detectors to help locate gold, and some seem to make some decent money out of it. Not all of them obviously, but some of them that know what they're doing and where to look. (typically people who study/studied geology)

my point in the second post was that its not absurd, hunting for gold is really interesting. I dont buy graphics card anyway for mining, as i dont mine a coin that requires a powerful GPU or CPU. I mine a coin that uses hard drives :why:
