t's not 'Assetto Corsa' levels of depth, but it's deep enough that you could probably get any car in the game to more or less suit your driving style and win every grip race it enters.
Do you remember Carbon's system? There was a slider of sorts whenever you bought a part, and you could change a tiny bit about it (engine upgrade gives you a torque/horsepower slider, tires give you drift/grip etc.) but it didn't come close to Underground's. In U2, you could essentially make an all out drift car to use in grip mode with how many options there were. In Carbon, you could set everything towards drifting and at most, you'd get some very awkward fishtailing in the corners

[editline]12th November 2017[/editline]
i did pretty much the same thing in my run through of underground 1 and 2, i made my car look like a sleeper on purpose bc the customization options that were "in" back when those games were released look flat out fucking ridiculous nowadays come to think of it that ties into one of the only things i don't like about UG2, you're required to rice the shit out of your car to progress further into the game
Yah, that's why I had a Miata in the garage. It got all the gaudy ricer bullshit on it and juuuuuust enough perf mods to make it to the photoshoots so the car I actually drove on a regular basis and thus had to look at all the time looked pretty much like a stock red Civic sedan with 16" spoked wheels colormatched to the body and a modest rear spoiler/chin spoiler.
I just miss the days of NFS 2-5, honestly. Hot Pursuit 2 too I guess. No silly forced customization, no open world bullshit, just fun racing which is what the series was all about.
I've been playing for a few days and while the card system seems a bit annoying, I haven't had any major problems upgrading or grinding them. I wouldn't describe it even close to a micro-transaction hell.
Most Wanted was the last good NFS game
carbon, prostreet, and hot pursuit 2010 were all varying degrees of good. the run isn't great but it's passable imo
i did pretty much the same thing in my run through of underground 1 and 2, i made my car look like a sleeper on purpose bc the customization options that were "in" back when those games were released look flat out fucking ridiculous nowadays come to think of it that ties into one of the only things i don't like about UG2, you're required to rice the shit out of your car to progress further into the game
while i agree that it's one of the only major flaws with the original game, there's also a mod that removes the star-rating requirements for the photo shoots which comes in real handy if you decide to revisit it on pc
i really hope that this won't lead to Ghost Games joining the mass grave filled with rotting corpses of former subsidiaries murdered by EA Ghost honestly did a fantastic job on the game itself and literally everything that is wrong with the game is EA's fault in one way or the other one thing that's especially infuriating is how they were forced to completely assrape and dumb down NFS 2015's detailed performance customization just to accommodate this fucking disgusting speedcard bullshit i have to admit that i bought the game, but you can bet your ass i'm not spending a fucking dime on the microtransactions
I've only really played two NFS games - Hot Pursuit 2 and Underground 2. Also tried NFS World while that was still alive, was quite fun for that time.

An old rumour about why this was so goes back to the days of the original NFS Hot Pursuit where Ferrari were supposedly adamant about not wanting their cars featured in illegal street racing with cops chasing them. Supposedly, there was a tweak that you could unlock the Ferrari for illegal racing (exactly what they didn't want) and they held off on the license for a long time after that. Lamborghini on the other hand, gleefully crammed as many as they could in NFS games just to piss off Ferrari. Ooh, and another rumour (from my buddy who used to work at EA Seattle) - supposedly, there was going to be a Porsche Unleashed style game focusing on Ferrari, but then Ferrari was playing it up, wanting creative control, more money for the license, etc. and EA just canned the development and told Ferrari to bite its shiny greedy ass. So that...soured things with them for a while.
It's sad to see how this ended. Honestly, all I wanted was Underground 2 HD Remake. It would've been a cash grab for them and people would've loved that.
I miss NFS Carbon. Still have the disc copy but it won't fucking run the game. I can only install it

Never hear anyone mention NFS: Pro Street. That's actually my favorite NFS game. It wasn't edgy underground street racers on purpose, veering into "official" and regulated street racing and events with crowds. Am I the only one who thinks the customization, body sculpting and tuning in that game, alongside vehicle variety was rock solid? Spent hours upon hours hand crafting each vehicle for different events.

It was also a radical departure from Carbon and Most Wanted, which had kind of seemed like they had finally pivoted the game down the line of "illegal street racing and customization" to...well, legal events. It was a technically brilliant game for all the reasons you described, but it polarized the userbase from the purists (the ones who've been playing since Road and Track presents) to the new breed of fans who joined in after the Hot Pursuit/Underground. Many saw the same thing happen when NFS: Shift was launched as well, with many, many people complaining that they were trying to pivot to Forza/Project Cars/GT next. There were two groups arguing, right at the time when the Porsche Unleashed game released (the first "drastic" change to the franchise). One, that liked the idea of visiting different ideas with each game, and the other that wanted different "lines" carrying the game's name (Similar to "Road and Track Presents", but "Need for Speed presents...") and exploring each idea in its entireity while keeping the original idea updated with new cars, modes, tracks, etc. Each idea had it's own faults, though.

does anyone remember need for speed undercover :vs:
prostreet
Everyone hated that game back then so yeah, hot pursuit 2010 in my opinion is the last good nfs.
