I remember when I used to infiltrate furry nests on Second Life while pretending to be a furry to study their behavioral patterns. I did this to many things, not just furries, and it turned out that furries had the best polite community. Even though something inside me felt threatened while being near them, I had accepted their pure lonely natural habits and passively went back and spectated from a distance, to not disturb their natural world. They mostly keep to themselves in flocks and as independents and stick to one place. Such strange yet interesting creatures that has so many sub-species. They tend to show off their vivid colors to attract the other sexes (they have many genders), but it also keeps away other species, mostly predators such as humans (strong colors = disease and intoxication). Even though they're not a ruminant organism and only has one digestive system, they sure can eat a lot different types of food, and yet coup with it without fatal after effects.

If people seriously lost friends over an interest like that, then they need to re-evaluate themselves or were not real friends anyways.

Yeah rejecting someone because they are a furry is absolutely awful.
I have a friend who is a furry, and while I am honest with him and have told him I find it absolutely hilarious, we still get on totally fine. It's not an issue unless you make it one.
Furries are cool; no really, they are.

Really it's just another example of how there are shitty people in all fandoms/walks of life.
Like Zaush, or Jay Naylor. (Zaush being one of the more infamous ones due to real-world sexual assault allegations and his occasional "I Can't Believe It's Not Kiddie Porn!*" submissions)
There are still always cool people, though. I remember back when I played SL a bunch of randos and I bought the Carl (from Aqua Teen Hunger Force) avatar and "raided" the Gay Yiffy Club. There were a couple of patrons there who claimed we were griefers, but the majority thought it was the best thing ever and laughed along with us.
