GPUs are essentially a shit ton of tiny processors working in parallel. That makes them very, very good at parallelizable tasks even beyond graphics.

OpenCL/Cuda/etc exist to take advantage of this.

GPUs are really, really good at a specific type of math on a specific type of number- floating point numbers. They can be really big and really precise, but they aren't the most accurate under certain circumstances- that trade-off allows them to be fairly small.

GPUs are essentially perfect for machine learning.
