It's more a reaction to what they perceive as the rise of far-right nationalism. To go further, they see liberals as useful idiots, and liberal democracy as a subpar system that inevitably leads to facism (or a state similar to such). Which is why they believe their confrontational tactics are necessary as a form of preventative treatment. Think of Antifa less as a political bloc on its own and more of a reaction to far-right nationalist political blocs that have risen up in America and Europe in the past 8 years or so.
