Old School Runescape is Rioting over in-game Gay Pride Event

It's an optional event for an optional cosmetic that's optional to wear
From a purely outsider perspective, the event has achieved nothing to help the LGBT community who may play the game and by the looks of it, it's pulling things in the oposite direction. The OSRS community seems to be entrenched in it's backwards views and no ammount of hitting them with a stick will make them rethink them.
It's a lost cause
You can ignore the event entirely in-game.
I play OSRS, and I knew nothing of the event until bigots made a big deal about it.
Obviously I'm for the gays, considering my brother is bisexual, and his girlfriend is transgender, and you've known me for 10 years now.
A gay pride event doesn't bother me at all, but imagine if you had to hear about Trump on RuneScape every hour?
I hate to say it, but I also play video games to get away from the world we live in.
No ban reason given on form when you look at why you were banned. Bans could not be appealed because no evidence was provided
Mods issued manual permabans and explained why on the game forums, not the player accounts.
That's par for the course for runescape mods. I spent almost a week emailing back and forth with their mods (because God forbid they have a customer service line, guess they got tired of 13 year old squeakers calling them or something) to find out why my account was locked. Finally got an answer that my account might have been compromised and was locked, not from the gameplay service mods, but through their billing department. Hell, the gameplay mod just told me I had been perma banned, linked me their page on reasons for being banned, didn't link me evidence of what I had done, and basically said I wasn't going to get unbanned.
With that said, its pretty clear cut why these dillweeds got banned, but their customer support still isn't very good.
From a purely outsider perspective, the event has achieved nothing to help the LGBT community who may play the game
It let the lgbt community of osrs have a nice little cosmetic that if they wanted to wear to represent themselves they could
sucks that bigots ruin things for other people!

evidently it was a very uncalibrated decision
If you go to the G.E., that's what you hear 90% of the time.
That's what mute and turning off public chat is for.
There's a lot of "Bad chat" like this already, this event has just put it all in falador for a bit.
I can't believe I forgot about that.
When I played OSRS last year there was a ton of talk about Trump and the election, which unsurprisingly pissed me off a bit.
It's an optional event for an optional cosmetic that's optional to wear
I really wish bad reading was around still. I'll tell you for the third time - what the event was (just a scarf hunt) wasn't known until AFTER the community and Jagex had argued for about 24 hours. The shitstorm was in full swing before the big reveal. The issue here is the argument itself and whether or not political content belongs in the game, what the event is (or will be, it's not even ingame yet) has basically become irrelevant at this point.
Please tell me how this has affecting your tree cutting.
Literally everyone is talking about it ingame chat and various RS discords I use. I want to play RS and talk RS without this shit.
The idea that politics should be kept out of entertainment is fucking ludicrous and impossible anyways.
It's an optional event for an optional cosmetic that's optional to wear
"But I don't want to see those political powered gay scarfs all over my game!"
As some of the Redditors apparently now claim :v:
Find new chats, then. Turn off public chat.
Link me a rs disc/cc that isn't like this right now lmao
as for turning public off - what's the point of playing a mmo and shutting out interaction? 50% of rs or any mmo is the social aspect

So basically, you are outraged over nothing, and instead of blaming those who are actually responsible for it (the bigots who made it political somehow), you blame Jagex. It really shows that more of those events are necessary. Anyone remember the outrage over Tracer from Overwatch?
Just found this golden post by the guy who started the Reddit thread and claimed that it was all political

It isn't.

A man dating another man is not the norm.
That doesn't make it bad.
It just isn't normal.

Having red hair is normal. Red hair is a normal hair color.
Being left handed is normal. It's normal to be either left or right handed.
Dating the same gender isn't really normal.

Nothings stopping you from doing either, especially the playing part of that
If you start playing again, I joined a nice little clan chat of about 15-20 people. Allows me to always have a nice chat, regardless of the random users around me. You could totally join.
I've been pretty bored this summer break, so I might as well.
It can be cool to be political sometimes.
On my normal world, there's a guy from Venezuela at G.E., he let me ask him questions about what's going on and stuff. He's trying to save money to get his family out. Really neat to talk to him.
That's actually pretty cool. I imagine that was a very enlightening discussion.
You're deliberately leaving out some key context here;
1: the nature of the event and what it contained wasn't announced until -after- the shitstorm had matured, it was just known as a "gay pride event"
2: during this time, MMK/wolf replied to very valid criticism and basically shrugged it all off and implied that anyone that doesn't want the event ingame is a bigot - even if they just don't want the game to have political content at all. Jag ignoring and brushing it off helped escalate it a fuck ton.
3: The nature event was told to outside media -before- the playerbase a full 24 hours -after- it was announced and the shit storm started. Why didn't jagex nip it in the bud within a few hours and just go "its just a scarf"? Most people are chilling out now they know the nature of the event. Jagex has intervened in past shitstorms by providing evidence/context on controversies before. Multiple times. This time, they let it stew for 24 hours, and then went to the media before the playerbase. Why?
yea but its just a scarf
people just found out they could act like retards because lots of other people were doin it to look cool so they just endlessly joined each other in a competition to see who is the most unajudsted kid
Literally everyone is talking about it ingame chat and various RS discords I use. I want to play RS and talk RS without this shit.
This is a non-issue. It won't be forever.
[editline]7th June 2017[/editline]
Visor you are really making this a bigger deal than it is.
No one is arguing realism? Christmas doesn't bring a ugly political shit storm to the table. Pride does, as is evidenced by Leddit losing it's shit and over reacting. Christmas isn't a hot-button topic. Homsoexuality is.
You really can't deny the difference here. Do you really think Christmas/Pride are on the same level politically and socially, especially in the USA? I want to log in to RS to a political shitstorm as much as I want a movie interrupted by a political shit storm.
What's your argument here? Jagex isn't allowed to have a short one week pride event thing because lots of people will flip their shit and react like moronic children?

That kinda' sounds like letting yourself be intimidated by idiotic assholes to me. Nah, let the idiot cull run strong and deep rofl. If you're gonna' post dumbshit /pol/ memes in public in runescape and feel like you've got some god-given right not to be banned for it you're fucking mentally deficient.
https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/runescape-pride-event-players-plan-riot-2017
Few things to note:
Mod Wolf was already unpopular for nerfing an end game helmet without polling players first
Protests have been held in w30 falador to protest bypassing the player community
Players wearing white garbs (desert outfits) at the protests have been permabanned for no given reason, mods claim players in those outfits were being racist and homophobic
Massive political divide incited over free speech, player input, and involving real world political issues in a medieval fantasy game
[sp]buying bf[/sp]
If you don't know why people are being banned for wearing desert robes, you either don't play RuneScape or you're a terrible liar.
Christmas isn't a hot-button topic. ... Do you really think Christmas/Pride are on the same level politically and socially, especially in the USA?
Lol have you ever heard of the War on Christmas? Fox News goes on a legit tirade every fucking year dude. Not a hot-button issue my ass, what rock do you live under?
Seems like a positive to me. More people getting banned or "protesting" at the event, less people hogging trees/ores.
This is a non-issue. It won't be forever.

RS is important to me - its how I connect with a lot of my overseas friends since I moved to a different country. I feel strongly about it, as most MMO players do about their MMO of choice. Jagex fucked up by making a hamfisted event and the particularly dumb part of the community made it even more hamfisted. Whats more, Jagex has handled these sorts of topics far better in the past too, namely with Armadyl being a gay character. IMHO making a well written, well motivated and realistically flawed LGBT character is much more powerful a statement that making a big deal out of a rainbow scarf. One fits the game and is a powerful, relatable message, the other just feels like standing behind a podium and making a statement because it's trendy to do so.
yea but its just a scarf

I sure love trying to explain the viewpoint that a large portion of players just want to click trees for hours on end and to discuss methods for getting good slayer XP with friends and sharing memes without either side messing around with that, just to get Twitter-tier epic zingers like "its just a scarf" because god forbid you make a thoughtful reply, despite explaining what it is is irrelevant, and what it has caused in the community is relevant. Over and over. Whether it's a scarf or a 2 month event it's caused a really dumb scism in the community.

If people wanna get themselves banned they're more than welcome to, but I'd still rather if this whole shitstorm never happened. I don't think political content like this belongs in RS, or games really, period. It's awkward as fuck. I mean I'm talking bad about this event despite having this(NSFW) shoved up my ass every other night by my SO. But I must be a bigot for thinking the entire situation is shit right :^). I've been purely talking about how this affects the game and it's community because that's what I'm concerned about.
This is the event:

Thats a pretty snazzy scarf, Id want one.
Like TBF I'd probably be more on the side of the people having the protest or whatever if this were hellmoo or someshit. I mean orphan murder was basically a mechanic in that game among a whole other slough of fucked up edgy BS. Hell, I'd probably join ironically if it were hellmoo. It'd fit the fucking tone of the game hahah.
But good lord we're talking about an old ass java browser MMO targeted at kids and teens run by a corporate body that believe it or not set rules about this kind of thing ahead of time why in the hell would you believe you've got a right not to get face disciplinary action for doing this rofl.
Free speech is kinda' a moot point when you could go wherever the hell you want to discuss these issues, and regardless I find the argument that in-game runescape chat of all things being some meaningful platform for political discussion to be suspect as shit. In the end, it's their private platform and they're more than within their rights to ban you for what they want. This isn't some blindside, it's rule fucking #1 of their code of conduct that seriously offensive language is grounds for disciplinary action.

It's not even just on TV. It's all over the place, it literally reached meme status with the Starbucks holidays cup. I refuse to believe you truly don't know about it.
Also just because your SO shoves a dildo up your ass every night doesn't mean you're suddenly 100% right and no one can argue against your bigoted opinions. A. straight people can enjoy dildos too, and B. Milo Yiannopoulos is gay and he's a bigoted piece of shit.
Also you're literally arguing in favour of a group of man children frothing at the mouth and throwing massive multiple website spanning tantrums over a few colourful, entirely cosmetic, pixels in an MMO, sorta hard to take you 100% seriously on that one and I hope you can understand why.
Thats a pretty snazzy scarf, Id want one.
Goes well with the fancy boots and rainbow phat.

Forgot about the starbucks thing until you mentioned it honestly, I was in Japan when that hit IIRC. I see what you're getting at, but (withing the rs community at least) it's much smaller issue. Mostly because there's not many 60 yearold dads playing.
and i mostly posted that because half the time it feels like people only give a shit about your opinion on something if you're ~one of them~. Also it's a bit of a laff.

i can't imagine what one's life is like to make them get outraged and upset over something happening in oldish runescape.
then again i can't imagine what someone's life is like that makes them believe runescape is actually worth playing today
