Before I bailed on the Gamescom stream yesterday, I realized that I use my Vive far more than my Xbox. So at least I don't regret the early purchase :v:
Same with my rift, got 200+ hours in the VRchat app alone.
I knew it was a good idea to wait.
But even now the Rift is $200 cheaper until the sale ends. I used to be so sure I was gonna get the Vive instead, but frankly, there's no reason for me to.
You could book a flight to the US, buy it and come back for cheaper.
I know aussies that literally have done this in the past for niche shit like this.
You could book a flight to the US, buy it and come back for cheaper.
That's enough money that if someone asks you to ship them a vive you go "yea buy you gotta buy me one too"

But if you don't care about roomscale, Rift is definitely the way to go yo. Also when setting up roomscale for Oculus Rift, keep in mind that the USBs need to reach the computer, so extensions may be needed depending on the setup
Rift roomscale works perfectly fine with 3 cameras. And the third camera comes with a much longer cable.

[Editline]a[/editline] And I've even already got wall hooks because I have Christmas lights set up around my room, so running the third sensor out to a shelf wouldn't be a problem, especially because I already own extensions if the cable is somehow too short. [Editline]a[/editline] I mean sure for other people the price might end up being closer to a Vive but for me personally the Rift is definitely the better option.
If the rift and Vive were the same price I'd still buy the rift. I've owned both and the Vive just feels much more of a janky, fiddly devkit with lots of little settings to screw around with. Even if the Vive has a slight edge with roomscale it has no major apps to use with it. Almost everything on steam is a janky tech demo or looks like a Hasbro 'My First Unity Render' game. You could use Revive to load Oculus store games but at that point you're jumping through tons of hoops just to play Oculus games with worse hardware and software.

So there is that
I've been wanting to pick up a VR headset for a while... I'd like a Vive but this is still too expensive. The fact that I don't care much for roomscale makes me consider a Rift. How's its tracking nowadays?

If you ever find yourself in the position that you have more room so you can play with room scale you just put a extra sensor behind you and you have room scale.

I still prefer the vive since there is a lot of oncoming accessories for it (such as the tracker, knuckles ) and because if i stay with the lighthouse system, i can get future headsets that operate under the system. They should have cut the price 100 dollars further though
The Vive is great so long as you don't have to deal with HTC's shitty RMA. It's been over a month with no base station, jesus christ.
They had to manufacture a whole bunch of components themselves afaik, could be that theyve just improved the manufacturing process, thus the price drop.
They're going to roll out the Knuckles controllers and the new lighthouses at some point, probably trying to both get rid of old stock, and also planning on releasing the knuckles and lighthouse 2.0 at the original $799. Oh also, they're still not planning on including the ""deluxe"" audio strap with the Vive. Valve should've gone it alone and not let HTC fuck with all the pricing on everything.
The tracking is stable and extremely accurate.
i feel like in the near future tracking won't be a problem at all, it'll be perfected and won't factor into deciding what hmd you will buy
It only left the experimental stage very recently, iirc. Since it became something everyone had access to, Rift is still the best choice right now, HTC just needed to drop the price to make vive a contender again. Now they just need to finish the knuckles and start including the Deluxe Audio Strap w/ retail packages and drop it another hundo
Room scale works perfect even with just 2 sensors for me. I don't have the biggest room so a 3rd might be required for a large play space, but 2 sensors in the recommended play area works flawlessly for me.
i feel like in the near future tracking won't be a problem at all, it'll be perfected and won't factor into deciding what hmd you will buy
Lighthouse 2.0 is really amazing tech, and should replace Oculus's bulky design. [editline]21st August 2017[/editline] To clarify, the 2.0 tech allows for multiple base-stations, allowing you to have theoretically infinite tracked space. Doesn't rely on an IR strobe, and the LH 2.0 hardware only has a single motor, making tracking tolerances tighter, and production cost lower.
Even with this price drop i went with an oculus. my primary use is for racing games so i feel like room scale on oculus vs vive isn't too relevant to me. I did really want hotdogs and hand grenades but that's really not worth justifying another 200 for.
lol it's 2500USD here and our salary is a fraction of what australians have
You could buy one, ship it to my house, and pay to ship the Vive and myself to you same-day air and it'd still be cheaper.
I otherwise have no problem playing this on my two sensor Rift setup
Same here, just don't place both of your cameras infront of you and roomscale works. My sensors are both on the walls to my left and right when im facing forward near the ceiling, 2m apart. These price drops/bundles are great in general for VR and I hope it makes things more accessible for people.
Oculus on the other hand is around $450 usd shits ridiculous, why is the vive so fucking expensive?
Can't really speak for Australia specifically, but overall, the Vive's more expensive because it actually comes with all the equipment you need out the box whereas Oculus is actually split in two independently charged packages, and the motion control package is lacking the extra sensors needed to make it proper 360° room scale.

Only the third sensor is ordered separately for 60.
I otherwise have no problem playing this on my two sensor Rift setup
awesome, now I officially don't regret my purchase. super excited to try it
This sounded awesome until I found Australia doesn't get the full $200 price cut but only $100 off. Ordering it here is still $1300 AUD apparently so they can keep sliding until I start considering it. That's $1030 USD. I dunno why we get fucked so hard?
Damn $1300 AUD, you could buy like ten beers with that.
If the rift and Vive were the same price I'd still buy the rift. I used to think the Rift felt cheaper and I thought the form-factor was kind of gaudy, but since then I've realized that their design is much more comfortable, except that it's difficult for glasses to fit in the Oculus set. You realize that Oculus also has an app to play SteamVR games right? And both of them are as simple as download, install, and use. It really comes down to your comfort within each headset I think, as both of them are about as good as the other. I prefer the Vive because it sits nicer on my head than the Oculus does, and even tho they're the same weight I feel the Vive puts less pressure on my head, but I also have a pretty big head so
i'm a hair's width away from just plonking down the money on either rig
Well I may own a vive by November Likely going to be my gift for my birthday
i'm a hair's width away from just plonking down the money on either rig
I suggest the vive, but you really cant go wrong either way. Make sure to grab some fun vr games as well
