I suggest the vive, but you really cant go wrong either way. Make sure to grab some fun vr games as well
What do you recommend? Hotdogs and hand grenades, as well as superhot are the ones i have the most interest in, what are other good titles? What was that one Rift game that was about killing robots? Does that work on the Vive?

There's software called Revive that'll make any Oculus exclusive game work on the Vive. There's also a port of Robo Recall to add proper Vive compatibility without Revive.
Look into the demo for Budget Cuts as soon as you get your Vive.

A fun one I like is space pirate simulator (its not super in depth, its a fun arcade style game though).
Another fun thing (which is free and works on both platforms) is minecraft in vr (vivecraft mod). I know the reputation minecraft has, but if you play with friends on a private server (and with mod support btw, your friends don't need vr but can use it), its honestly amazing, especially if you can tolerate freemove mode with room tracking and controller tracking. Its one of my favorite experiences in vr and I highly suggest everyone to check it out.
Im also aware that hl2 is receiving a proper vr mod, and there's also a fun osu vr port on steam.
You can play Oculus games with the vive with revive, and I believe the rift can play seated vive experiences, with room support only if the developer adds it themselves

Ultrawings is a fun, relaxing ultralight sim with a good mix of arcade and sim elements.

IronWolf VR is a submarine sim that you really need to play with friends to enjoy, but if you can put a group together it's a blast.

Is VR in existing non-VR games (either by hacking, modding or the rare official patch) something that's even worth getting a VR headset for? Because that's really the main thing that intrigues me about VR. I have zero interest in the arcade-y launch titles, but rather wish for enhanced immersion in seated experiences with traditional controls. Is the current VR scene capable of delivering this, or will it take another generation to achieve?

There are things like VorpX that do this kind of thing, but it is usually nothing more than a very band-aid solution to a big undertaking. Pretty sure most people that use VorpX would probably recommend you wait for native support. However, there are plenty of games that are available with native support that don't have arcadey feels to them.
Onward is my personal favorite, and if I had more friends with VR, Iron Wolf would be up there too.

Capable: Absolutely.
Is VR in existing non-VR games (either by hacking, modding or the rare official patch) something that's even worth getting a VR headset for?
Worth it? Debatable. Taking over your mouse isn't very immersive; being able to move your head around and have that move your character's head and arms, that's immersive. You can play games like HL2 in VR - but you really do need VR controls if you want to feel actually immersed.
Also, word to the wise: Be cautious about any game that requires you to more or less be constantly moving. Unless you've been gifted with some strong-arse VR legs, you're gonna be weak in the knees and green in the face just moments to minutes after you decide 'Imma play a game that jolts me up and down when I go up/down stairs and slides me around when I move this directional pad'.
You gotta do it like VFR to give people's stomachs a chance - jolts and bursts of movement combined with teleportation. The constant motion can be really upsetting to your brain and, accordingly, your stomach. If you want to get over that I'm afraid you're just gonna have to wait for GVR stims to come out commercially so you can 'patch' that error in the experience. That said, if you're doing a seated experience (e.g. a combat flight simulator) you should be just fine. Games like DCS and Project CARS are well-enriched by VR - just make sure that you have a rig that can do well over 60 FPS on whatever quality settings you enjoy.

Hacks like vorpx aren't very good. You can play non vr games in a large 2d screen in a vr environment though, if thats what you want. However, mods that add vr support to games can be decent, or in some cases, excellent

Cases like DOOM 3 BFG VR, in which the support and the level of immersion is awesome.

Just throwing this out there- I hear a lot of gamers say they're only interested in traditional, seated experiences in VR, but once they try room-scale they're hooked. Obviously everyone's different and some people still don't care for room-scale after trying it, but I think you have to give it a chance before deciding you're not interested.
I bought a Vive explicitly for the purpose of playing flight sims in VR, but I've gotten the most use out of room-scale. It's just such an incredibly transformative technology that you really have to try it to understand.
Room scale is truly underrated by newcomers to VR. I was one of those. Onward changed my mind pretty quickly.
