But it is shutting down the project because I'm pretty sure you can't get the game digitally anywhere (2142 at least)
Can't get BF2 digitially either.
i wonder how many of you nerds actually read the letter that was sent to the revive team. https://reviveheroes.com/notice.txt they literally ask them to stop using their trademark, logos, and artwork on the revive site, as well as redestributing the game files for free. nowhere does it state they want the project to be shut down, that's wholly on the part of the revive team overreacting.
That still begs the question of why they're only giving a shit about this now when Revive's been around for years and EA knew about them.
I was so excited to relive the battlefield heroes days. Fuck you EA.
Just because EA has a 'Legit' reasons for doing this, does not make them any less of an asshole for doing so. Honestly what the hell does EA have to gain from doing this, other than pissing off alot of fans and ruining the Revive Network's hard work. Just goes to show that EA are truly scumbags.
But it is shutting down the project because I'm pretty sure you can't get the game digitally anywhere (2142 at least)
Not legally anyway, so EA is effectively encouraging piracy. They could put the game on GOG and profit from the obvious interest, but apparently that makes too much sense for them.
What a load of bullshit. I definitely agree more games need proper re-releases though and to keep the servers online. Were they distributing the games for free or something? If they were, it's understandable, but at the same time I'd at least see if some kind of deal could be cut with them. (Game stays alive and servers stay up, and game gets a proper re-release for cheap and EA gets a cut of the money or something.) If I was some major company I'd at least try to keep my old titles selling somehow. Not outright abandon them. If I DID abandon them, I wouldn't give a single fuck about people redistributing it or keeping it alive, it's already out of production so it's not like I'd be making any money anyway.
Before this, someone could just create a Revive account and then just download the game the want, either BF2, BF2142 ( and their respective expansions), and BFH for free
Understandable. They have to outright defend their copyright. You can't "lose" your copyright for failing to defend it, but it doesn't look good for your company. Trademarks and IP might be a different story. Either way I do wish it could have been handled a bit better, and I put a good chunk of blame on E.A. for letting this situation occur in the first place. (Wasn't BF2 on steam at one point? I swore it was and then it got delisted.)
Whilst on the Revive Network webpage I noticed a disclaimer at the bottom of their webpage. So their claim about
Thing is, your websites may easily mislead visitors to believe that you are associated or affiliated with EA — we’re the only ones that get to wear the “Official EA” dog tag
is bullshit.
Fucking bullshit. [editline]26th October 2017[/editline] https://battlelog.co/ The main site is still up but the forums are gone for some reason.

"hehe xd let's stop selling a game then make it impossible to legally get said game when it's very obvious people would still probably pay $10 for it the only amount of money we can make is ALL OF THE MONEY WITH MAXIMUM GREED, anything less is BENEATH US"
They for some reason decided to close off chat in Revive Discord too. Why? It seems like they are really pushing towards closing everything off, which is a bit...odd
They for some reason decided to close off chat in Revive Discord too. Why? They either really don't want to mess with ea's lawyers or its worse than they let on
Yeah they really want to kill off everything. They either really don't want to mess with ea's lawyers or its worse than they let on
Yeah there's no reason for the discord to be closed.
They for some reason decided to close off chat in Revive Discord too. Why? It seems like they are really pushing towards closing everything off, which is a bit...odd
In terms of chat, they probably closed it because of massive spamming from frustrated players.
Fucking cunts if you don't want people infringing on your copyrights how about don't kill your fucking games in the first place.
creating custom servers for either existing or dead games is something I would consider ethical, a lot of countries and regions have a copyright provision for modifying copyrighted work in order to "make it work with your own program"
Download links for the launcher are still available on the old forums. Get it while you still can. The master server is still up and you can still play. the revive guys majorly overreacted imo. the copyright team at ea are really nice and helpful from my own experience and they are only asking them to stop using EA's artworks / logos and to cease sharing of the game files. They could continue on fine if they would just change the artwork and distance themselves from ea more.
Revive has posted a couple updates on their facebook page.
So many of you have herd the news by now. We got a Limited DCMA from EA to not distribute the game or use owned artwork. As we promised we always claimed we would honor the requests. What does this mean going forward? Well right now we are very much in limbo of how far we are to continue. At this current junction you can STILL play BF2 and 2142 if you have a account. We are right now as we speak in works with our team what a optimal direction forward is. We ask right now you do not speculate anything. We are revive and right now our phoenix is ash But like the phoenix we will once again rise from the ashes anew.

We built an amazing community filled with amazing people and amazing potential. It was more then just bringing back a game for us. For us it was a chance to dive into real world problems. Solve things and evolve our talents and skills. We believe we have done that, With the DCMA in action we promised we would shut down if we ever got the message. Not due to the fact that we have to but because its the right thing to do. Even though many of you are upset at EA. We respect and honor the fact that the game got made in the first place. We are honored they let us run for 3.5 Years unrestrained that is a long time. We got a large chunk of nostalgia built right up. and we learned a lot about volume vs costs. We learned how to defend against attacks. We learned how to secure and contain your privacy. We learned how to track and rank you. We did so many amazing things with so very little. We built an amazing community friends. This Facebook page will not go to waste. We promise it wont turn into a click hole. So if you want to see what might be around the bend. Stay tuned here and don't unsubscribe! The Phoenix will be reborn. Just no the the shape you assumed before. Love. Your Community Manager. Engineerisaac
It really does seem like they're totally shutting down over this...
Revive has posted a couple updates on their facebook page. It really does seem like they're totally shutting down over this...
For fucks sake. EA's team threw them a bone by not dropping the hammer and they took a big shit on the opportunity to continue and just... seemingly ran away. I can only hope that isn't the case. I definitely did NOT get my fill of BF2 and BF2142. These guys are on Facepunch as well, atleast one of the lead devs is... if you're reading this Spencer then know that while I'm frustrated, I still support the project and what it stands for. I think it would be sad to see such a good natured team and effort die this way.

It's also illegal if you didn't own it. Having any other way to download the game than giving people a direct download would expose Revive to more legal complications. It's not simple.
There's loads of disks available on amazon, ebay, etc.
Yes, but getting Revive will let you play on their servers. If you bought a physical disk/still have the disk/ or own it digitally you can't play online since GameSpy servers are shut down. Edit: What I hope that something good can come out of this whole ordeal. I hope that this talk of older games like BF2 and BF2142 can encourage EA to make them available again and bring back life to their servers via Steam, GOG or even their own. They will make money as veterans of the franchise can relive memories over a decade ago and those who are newer can understand what made Battlefield 2 and 2142 legendary.
im pretty sure revive patched the game or os settings to point to their servers, not distribute a modded installer
Hmm. When I installed BF2 on Steam and tried to go create an online account it wouldn't let me. Is there some patch on the site?
What sucks about this to me is that I can't play Battlefield Heroes again :( Me and my brother a few years back spent way more money than we needed to, and I'd bet that he would love to go on a nostalgia trip. (Definitely seems like Revive is overreacting. Just change logos, some artwork and they should be good.)
Dude, scroll up.
The point I am trying to make is that you if you have the original game, you cannot connect to any servers because they are none
The point I am trying to make is that you if you have the original game, you cannot connect to any servers because they are none
That link goes to the revive launcher for bf2/2142. It fixes that.
