Revive Network (the guys who resurrected Battlefield 2/2142/Heroes) got DMCA'd by EA

It seems kinda stupid you pay so much money for a game and one day they decide they just disable it basically, and then use legal bullshit to quell anyone who tries to revive it.
Dethklok clan will be running backup 2142 servers when the Revive master sever goes down.
I don't get the whole "overreaction" direction. EA is a multi-billion dollar company with access to the best lawyers in the country, and near-limitless funds to use them. A complete shutdown is the safest thing they could have possibly done.
Even though EA worded it so casually and "lovingly," you can bet your ass they had a terrifying-looking C&D on the docket just in case. This sucks and is the worst possible outcome for Revive, but I don't think they had a choice in the matter.
BF2Hub will be the place to go after Revive shuts down if you want to play BF2. They have a patcher which works with all versions of BF2.

All EA said was that hosting the full game for download on their site might misrepresent the Revive Network as having the legal rights to distribute the game. That's not exactly revolutionary. Plenty of private servers have been allowed to stay active in similar circumstances so long as they're not giving the entire game for free.
The revive team really pussied out of a single legal letter from EA.
Good news, servers will stay up until further notice.

Pretty much, I've never really been shown that modding games to do private/unofficial servers is illegal*. But distributing copyrighted game assets? Absolutely.
In the star wars galaxies private server community for example, they don't give you any game files, and linking wares in the forums is usually bannable. Getting the games is your responsibility.
* sometimes modders do get cease and desists and they suspend their projects. A C&D is basically a request though, you can ignore it, but that's daring them to sue you.
It makes me quite sad that while EA is not attempting to shut down the servers, that there is no legal way for a large influx of new players to join. Others in this thread have mentioned copies on ebay and whatnot, but if Revive started out saying "make sure you buy it from this seller on ebay" it wouldn't have taken off the way it did. I can only hope that within a year EA decides to redistribute 2142 digitally and give it an even larger playerbase. But that probably won't happen.

Revive is dead. EA didn't kill it, but the revive creators are using it as an excuse to shut everything down because they don't want to run it anymore.
^Dethklok servers are the only servers that get large populations so that's good.
It is a legit reason.
Not really, all revive was doing was un-killing a game that EA killed.
If a previous product a company has sold is better in the eyes of consumers than a new one, they should have no obligation to buy the new one. They've already bought the old one.
Well I had fun while it lasted.
I still don't get why EA rebooted Battlefront 2 and Battlefront 1.
Where they ashamed of the original game?
It's a bit like Bethesda with Prey and Doom.
Strange to be ashamed of good games, consider the hype that was built up for Prey 2.

no its because they know idiots will eat it up and buy the games again. just splash some fancy visuals on it and sell it for $60 (or $100) because of brand loyalty and desperation for anything star wars really, no matter the company or poor content.

it's about hoarding shittons of money through brand recognition and nothing else.
